The Geometry of D-Decomposition of a Two-Dimensional Plane of Arbitrary Coefficients of the Characteristic Polynomial of a Discrete System

The D-decomposition of a two-dimensional plane of arbitrary coefficients of a discrete characteristic polynomial is studied. The geometry of the boundary curve is analyzed and its common properties with a linear discrete system of any order are described. Example are given.     

Neural-Net Analysis of the Plasticity of ÉP-450 Ferrite–Martensite Steel with Different Alloying Element Concentrations

The results of a computational experiment with a neural-net model simulating the effect of the chemical composition on the plastic properties of ÉP-450 steel are presented. It is shown that computer-aided development of reactor steel with prescribed properties is, in principle, possible.     

SVBR-75/100 Multipurpose Modular Low-Power Fast Reactor with Lead–Bismuth Coolant

The results of development work on the SVBR-75/100 modular fast reactor cooled by lead–bismuth coolant are presented. The design is based on the experience gained operating reactors in nuclear-powered submarines. The SVBR-75/100 reactor is inherently safe because of its low power, the chemical inertness and high boiling point of the lead–bismuth coolant, and the integrated basin-type arrangement of the first-loop equipment. This eliminates the conflict between the safety and economic requirements that is characteristic of conventional-type reactors. The lower power makes it possible to build the reactor in a factory and deliver the reactor using any form of transportation to the nuclear power plant site. All safety systems operate passively. Most of these systems are used as normal-operating systems. This creates conditions for multipurpose applications of such reactor modules in developed and developing countries.     

Reliability of the Coolant Flow Rate Measuring System at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant

Age assessment and control of the reliability of the coolant flow-rate measurement system of the RBMK-1500 reactor at the Ignalina nuclear power plant are examined. A statistical analysis is made of the data obtained from measurements of the techanical characteristics of SHADR-32M flow meters. A mathematical model of the aging of flow meters and reliability estimates is constructed. A strategy is developed for replacing SHADR; this strategy makes it possible to support the required relaibility of the entire coolant flow-rate measurement system.

Analysis and Simulation of S-shaped Waveguide in Silicon-on-insulator

The simulation and analysis of S-shaped waveguide bend are presented.Bend radius larger than 30 mm assures less than 0.5 dB radiation loss for a 4-μm-wide silicon-on-insulator waveguide bend with 2-μm etch depth.Intersection angle greater than 20° provides negligible crosstalk (<-30 dB) and very low insertion loss.Any reduction in bend radius and intersection angle is at the cost of the degradation of characteristics of bent waveguide and intersecting waveguide, respectively.     

Analysis and comparison of two-dimensional permanent-magnet arrays for planar motor

This paper investigates three kinds of permanent-magnet arrays used in planar motors with polarity centers distributed in the lattices of a matrix. The magnetic field of every kind of magnet array is analyzed by analytical methods. First, we give a Laplace equation of magnetic scalar potential and a series of boundary conditions. Then, we derive the analytical expressions of magnet field strength and magnet flux density in the air gap of each kind of magnet array by the method of separation of variables. Finally, we compare the three types of magnet arrays on the basis of the analytical solutions.     

Connecting the second exhaust-heat boiler to the operating first one under the conditions of flow circuits of combined-cycle plants with two gas-turbine units and one steam turbine

Problems arising with connecting the second exhaust-heat boiler to the first exhaust-heat boiler under load in the case of flow circuits of combined-cycle plants of type PGU-450 are considered. Similar problems exist for two-boiler single-turbine units of type PGU-325 and for two-boiler single-turbine units of traditional steampower plants with an output of 200–300 MW upon connection of the second furnace of a two-furnace boiler to the operating first furnace. Analysis of the temperature-induced stressed state and of the cyclic strength of thick-walled elements of the steam-water conduit of PGU-450 and of two-furnace boilers of two-boiler single-turbine units with an output of 200–300 MW (the check valve, the inlet header of the water economizer) is used for determining the steam temperature differences in the high-pressure conduits to the steam turbine and the order of connection of the second exhaust-heat boiler to the operating fist one. Modes of enabling a two-boiler single-turbine unit of a combined-cycle plant, which are most “rigid” from the standpoint of thermal strength, are determined. __________ Translated from élektricheskie Stantsii, No. 2, February 2006, pp. 11–17.     

Hydrogen degradation of steels in gas mains after long periods of operation

We study the degradation of the mechanical and corrosion properties of 17G1S steel in gas mains as a result of operation for 28–40 yr. We reveal the simultaneous decrease in its strength and hardness, on the one hand, and impact toughness and crack resistance, on the other hand. The indicated parameters prove to be most sensitive to the in-service degradation of the metal. The degradation of steel leads to the increase in the strain-hardening coefficient and the appearance of the yield plateau in the tensile stress-strain diagram and causes the appearance of sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement increasing in the process of operation. We analyze the role of absorbed hydrogen affecting the mechanism of strain aging and responsible for the appearance of defects. It is shown that the polarization resistance can be used not only for monitoring of the corrosion state of gas pipelines but also for the prediction of changes in their mechanical properties in the process of operation. __________ Translated from Fizyko-Khimichna Mekhanika Materialiv, Vol. 43, No. 5, pp. 97–104, September–October, 2007.
