An experimental study on tritium (T) transfer in porous concrete for the tertiary T safety containment is performed to investigate (i) how fast HTO penetrates through concrete walls, (ii) how well concrete walls contaminated with water-soluble T are decontaminated by a solution-in-water technique, and (iii) how well hydrophobic paint coating works as a protecting film against HTO migrating through concrete walls. The experiment is comparatively carried out using disks of cement paste which W(water)/C(cement) weight ratio is 0.6:1 with or without hydrophobic paints, and mortar disks which W/C/sand ratio is 0.6:1:2 with or without the paints. The hydrophobic paints tested in the present study are an epoxy polymer resin paint and an acrylic-silicon polymer resin one. After T exposure during specified time under a constant HTO vapor pressure in an acrylic box, the amount of water-soluble HTO on/in the disks is determined using a technique of H2O dissolution during specified time. The results obtained here are summarized as follows: (1) HTO penetration in porous concrete can be correlated in terms of the effective diffusivity. (2) Its value in porous cement without coating is 1.2 × 10−11 m2/s at 25 °C. (3) HTO penetrates only through pores in cement, and there is no path for HTO transfer in non-porous sand. (4) Rates of sorption and dissolution of HTO in disks of cement and mortar coated with the epoxy resin paint are correlated in terms of the effective diffusivity through the paint film which value is DT = 1.0 × 10−16 m2/s. The rate-determining step is diffusion through the paint. (5) The epoxy resin paint works more effectively as an anti-HTO diffusion coating. (6) Another acrylic-silicon resin paint does not work well as anti-HTO diffusion coating. This may be because the hydrophobic property of the silicon resin paint is deteriorated with elongating the contact time with H2O vapor or liquid. (7) The HTO uptake inside the epoxy paint is greater than that of the silicon one. (8) The permeation reduction factor (PRF) of HTO for the epoxy paint at steady-state is expected large, if HTO vapor only contributes to diffusion. However, when concrete surfaces coated with the epoxy paint are under wet conditions, the PRF value becomes smaller. All those results can be used to estimate the effect of HTO soaking in concrete walls in case of accidental T release in a fusion reactor room and to decontaminate wastes of tritiated concrete.  相似文献

This paper presents a probability density function formula for predicting the polarization dependent loss (PDL) in an optical transmission system composed of passive devices and connecting fibers. A new calculation technique, which enables the probability density function formula to be obtained theoretically, is used instead of the most complicated part of the Muller-matrix or Jones-matrix calculations, which has been thought to be necessary for analyzing PDL. This technique involves calculation of the transmission coefficients of the transmission system and its devices from their PDLs. In the theoretical development, the central limit theorem is used as the sole approximation. A Monte Carlo numerical simulation was done to verify the validity of the analytical theory. Very good agreement between simulation and analytical theory is obtained when the number of devices having PDL is four or more. An experiment also demonstrated the validity of the analytical theory. The theory can also explain some phenomena that occur in systems composed of optical amplifiers, even though it had originally been developed to explain PDL-related phenomena in systems composed of passive devices only  相似文献

The piezoelectric stress coefficient and electrostriction coefficient for unpoled and poled films of polyvinylidene fluoride have been determined by applying a sinusoidal electric field and detecting stresses with the same and double frequency as the applied field, respectively. The piezoelectric coefficient shows a hysteresis with the cyclic change of the d.c. bias field. Under the poling field, the dipoles in polymers are preferentially oriented in the direction of the field, thus producing a residual polarization associated with a residual stress. Both coefficients increase with increasing temperature. A phenomenological interpretation for the piezoelectricity in poled polymers is given in terms of electrostriction and residual stress.  相似文献

Electrets of carnauba wax and resin have exhibited good stability of trapped charges for nearly 50 years. Dipolar orientation and trapped charge are two mechanisms contributing to the pyro-, piezo-, and ferroelectricity of polymers. Since the 1950s, shear piezoelectricity was investigated in polymers of biological origin (such as cellulose and collagen) as well as synthetic optically active polymers (such as polyamides and polylactic acids). Since the discovery of piezoelectricity in poled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in 1969, the pyro-, piezo-, and ferroelectricity were widely investigated in a number of polar polymers, such as copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene, copolymers of vinylcyanide and vinylacetate, and nylons. Recent studies involve submicron films of aromatic and aliphatic polyureas prepared by vapor deposition polymerization in vacuum and the piezoelectricity of polyurethane produced by the coupling of electrostriction and bias electric fields. Gramophone pickups using a piece of bone or tendon were demonstrated in 1959. Microphones using a stretched film of polymethyl glutamate were reported in 1968. Ultrasonic transducers using elongated and poled films of PVDF were demonstrated in 1972. Headphones and tweeters using PVDF were marketed in 1975. Hydrophones and various electromechanical devices utilizing PVDP and its copolymers have been developed during the past 30 years. This paper briefly reviews the history and recent progress in piezoelectric polymers.  相似文献

The combustion behavior of a single sodium droplet has been studied experimentally, by use of a falling droplet. It was found that D2‐law can hold for the sodium droplet combustion after the ignition, which can be observed to occur through an increase in the droplet temperature under a condition without a gaseous flame, suggesting that a surface reaction plays an important role in the ignition of sodium. It was also found that the burning rate‐constant without forced convection has nearly the same value as those for conventional hydrocarbon droplets, although it is considered that the sodium combustion proceeds in an oxidizer‐rich environment even in the air. This can be judged by comparing a temporal variation of the flame/droplet diameter ratio for the sodium droplet with that for the hydrocarbon droplet. A micro‐explosion of the burning droplet is also observed when oxygen concentration in the ambience exceeds 0.33 in mass fraction. As for the falling velocity and/or distance of the burning droplet, it turned out that the use of the drag coefficient for solid sphere under isothermal condition is inappropriate in obtaining accurate values. It was also found in another experiment that when Re > 500, the drag coefficient of the falling droplet undergoing combustion is as high as 2 depending on combustion situation and/or droplet temperature, while that of the solid sphere under an isothermal condition is 0.44. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this study is to clarify the transitional change of the proliferation and differentiation of human peripheral blood CD34+ cells to megakaryocytic lineage, focusing on its clinical application. We developed a rapid system to purify human peripheral blood CD34+ cells from healthy volunteers, which produced CD34+ cells with a 90% purity. The purified CD34+ cells predominantly consisted of CD41- cells, and the rate of coexpression of CD41 was 0.6% +/- 0.5%. When the purified cells were cultured in liquid phase for 10 days in the presence of recombinant human stem cell factor (rSCF: a ligand for c-kit), interleukin-3 (rIL-3), and thrombopoietin (rTPO: a ligand for Mpl), the number of CD34+/CD41+ cells increased to 19% +/- 7% of total expanded cells on day 4 (4 days of liquid culture) and then gradually decreased to 2.2% +/- 0.6% on day 10. The absolute number of CD34+/CD41+ cells increased and reached a plateau on day 6, and 1.7 +/- 0.6 x 10(5) CD34+/CD41+ cells were produced by 1 x 10(5) CD34+/CD41- day 0 cells. The CD34-/CD41+ cells appeared on day 6, continuously increased in number until day 10, and constituted the main population of expanded cells on day 10, with a value of 38% +/- 18%. On day 10, 19.5 +/- 10.6 x 10(5) of CD34-/CD41+ cells were produced by 1 x 10(5) CD34+/CD41- day 0 cells. The deletion of rTPO from this cytokine combination decreased the number of CD34+/CD41+ and CD34-/CD41+ cells, after days 6 and 8, respectively. Day 0 cells required rIL-3 for promoting colonies containing megakaryocytes, whereas rTPO alone promoted almost no megakaryocytic colonies from day 0 cells. Thus, a combination of IL-3 and SCF expands CD34+/CD41+ cells from CD34+/CD41- cells, and TPO mainly acts to increase CD34-/CD41+ cells. This study suggests that if the expansion of CD34+/CD41+ is performed in vitro, the 6 days' culture of peripheral blood CD34+/CD41- cells with a combination of IL-3 and SCF with TPO provides the most rapid and stable products of CD34+/CD41+ cells for the rapid recovery of platelets in patients with peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.  相似文献

Pinopsin is a blue-sensitive photoreceptive molecule possibly involved in photic entrainment of the circadian pacemaker in the chicken pineal gland. To characterize pinopsin as a circadian photoreceptor, antibodies were raised against the C-terminal portion of pinopsin. As expected from the divergence of the amino acid sequence of this region, the resultant antibody cross-reacted with neither chicken rhodopsin nor red-sensitive cone pigment (chicken red). In Western blot analysis, the antibody stained a single band of 42-kDa protein in a detergent-extract of chicken pineal membranes, suggesting that pinopsin (calculated molecular weight, 38187) might be glycosylated and/or palmitoylated. Immunocytochemical examination of pineal sections of the chicken and the pigeon with this antibody revealed strong positive images for most of the membrane structures in the lumen of the follicles. This antibody also stained string- and bulb-shaped structures of the chicken parafollicular cells, the morphology of which resembles those of retinal photoreceptor cells. In contrast to the predominant distribution of pinopsin, a monoclonal antibody specific for chicken red stained a smaller number of membrane structures in the lumen of chicken pineal follicles. These results strongly suggest that the chicken pineal gland contains at least two types of photoreceptive molecules, pinopsin (major) and chicken red (minor). We show that the former molecule is localized in parafollicular pinealocytes and in the outer segments of pinealocytes that make contact with the follicular lumen.  相似文献
