The Effect of Moisture Content on the Conversion of Ergosterol to Vitamin D in Shiitake Mushrooms

The distribution of ergosterol in different parts of shiitake mushrooms was studied in order to optimize the conversion of ergosterol to vitamin D₂ during drying. The effect of moisture on the conversion of ergosterol to vitamin D₂ was also investigated by adjusting the moisture content of fresh mushrooms to different levels in a large vacuum desiccator and subjecting them to UV irradiation at 290-320 nm wavelength, for 2 h. The moisture, ergosterol and vitamin D₂ contents were determined using standard procedures. It was found that the ergosterol content on a dry matter basis of fresh shiitake mushroom was highest in the gills (10.6 ± 0.99 mg/g DM), followed by the cap or pileus (5.34 ± 0.64 mg/g DM) and was least in the stalk or stipe (2.97 ± 0.56). The moisture content had a marked influence on the conversion of ergosterol to vitamin D₂, the best conversion taking place at a moisture content of about 70% on a wet basis.     

Monolithic SiGe Up‐/Down‐Conversion Mixers with Active Baluns

The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of monolithically matching circuits, interface circuits, and RF core circuits to the same substrate. We designed and fabricated on‐chip 1 to 6 GHz up‐conversion and 1 to 8 GHz down‐conversion mixers using a 0.8 µm SiGe hetero‐junction bipolar transistor (HBT) process technology. To fabricate a SiGe HBT, we used a reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition (RPCVD) system to grow a base epitaxial layer, and we adopted local oxidation of silicon (LOCOS) isolation to separate the device terminals. An up‐conversion mixer was implemented on‐chip using an intermediate frequency (IF) matching circuit, local oscillator (LO)/radio frequency (RF) wideband matching circuits, LO/IF input balun circuits, and an RF output balun circuit. The measured results of the fabricated up‐conversion mixer show a positive power conversion gain from 1 to 6 GHz and a bandwidth of about 4.5 GHz. Also, the down‐conversion mixer was implemented on‐chip using LO/RF wideband matching circuits, LO/RF input balun circuits, and an IF output balun circuit. The measured results of the fabricated down‐conversion mixer show a positive power conversion gain from 1 to 8 GHz and a bandwidth of about 4.5 GHz.     

Computer modeling of the continuous annealing furnace

A computer program to calculate the strip temperature heated in the continuous annealing furnace was developed, using the zone method for radiative heat transfer analysis with the measured gas temperature in the furnace. Using theF _E Operator, the present study considered the effects of soot and transient species, in addition to the H₂O−CO₂ gas mixture on the gas radiative heat transfer. The predicted strip temperature distribution forF _E=1.05 represented well the measured data. The maximum difference in the heat flux transfered to the strip from the combustion gas forF _E=1.0 (without soot and transient species gas radiation) and 1.05 (with soot and transient species gas radiation) was about 15%. The present study also investigated the effects of line speed and thickness variations on the strip temperature, establishing the bases for the on-line computer model.     

Efficient Computation of EXIT Functions for Nonbinary Iterative Decoding

The calculation of nonbinary extrinsic information transfer charts for the iterative decoding of concatenated index-based codes is addressed. We show that the extrinsic information at the output of a constituent a posteriori probability decoder can be calculated with very low complexity, where expensive histogram measurements are not required any more. An example for turbo trellis-coded modulation demonstrates the capabilities of the proposed approach     

Single-photon avalanche diode detectors for quantum key distribution

The application of quantum key distribution (QKD) has raised particular demands for single-photon detectors. One of the most promising candidates at the low-loss optical fibre communications windows is the planar geometry InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode. These detectors have been modelled, fabricated and characterised at 1.55 mum wavelength. Their performance in terms of single-photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, timing jitter and afterpulsing behaviour are reported and compared with the best commercially available, linear multiplication avalanche photodiodes operated in Geiger-mode. Their use in the application of QKD is discussed.     

Neighborhood disadvantage moderates associations of parenting and older sibling problem attitudes and behavior with conduct disorders in African American children.

Data from 296 sibling pairs (mean ages 10 and 13 years), their primary caregivers, and census records were used to test the hypothesis that African American children's likelihood of developing conduct problems associated with harsh parenting, a lack of nurturant-involved parenting, and exposure to an older sibling's deviance-prone attitudes and behavior would be amplified among families residing in disadvantaged neighborhoods. A latent construct representing harsh-inconsistent parenting and low levels of nurturant-involved parenting was positively associated with younger siblings' conduct disorder symptoms, as were older siblings' problematic attitudes and behavior. These associations were strongest among families residing in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Future research and prevention programs should focus on the specific neighborhood processes associated with increased vulnerability for behavior problems. Scalar quantisation of LSF parameters using vector measurement

A new form of line spectral frequency (LSF), bounded line spectral frequency, is presented. It is shown that the new representation is more efficient than the direct line spectral frequency and the differential line spectral frequency (DLSF). By using a vector measure, the scalar quantisation of tenth-order linear predictive coding (LPC) parameters can be coded at 28 bit/frame with a transparent quantisation quality     

Variants of chromosome 9 in phenotypically normal individuals

The human chromosome 9 displays the highest degree of structural variability. Four different types of variants are described including pericentric inversion, extra G-positive band in the q arm, additional G-positive band in the p arm and duplication of band 9q21-q22. It is important to demonstrate inheritance from a phenotypically normal individual in order to differentiate between a variant chromosome and an abnormal chromosome.     

Improved strained HEMT characteristics using double-heterojunctionIn0.65Ga0.35As/In0.52Al0.48As design

The DC and microwave properties of strained In_0.65Ga _0.35As/In₀₅₂Al_0.48As HEMTs (high electron-mobility transistors) with double-heterojunction design are presented. The high sheet carrier density and good carrier confinement give rise to excellent device performance with very low output conductance. For 1×150-μm² long-gate HEMTs, the measured cutoff frequency f_T and maximum frequency of oscillation f_max are as high as 37 and 66 GHz, respectively
