T he R emoval of heavy metals and aluminium residuals during upflow sludge-blanket clarification was investigated using a pilot-plant system. Pilot units treating predosed raw water on site were assessed for sludge-blanket formation and stabilization, and were found to produce clarified water of a comparable quality to the main works units after the start-up and stabilization periods were complete. The heavy metals Cr, Fe, Mn, and Ni were the only heavy metals detectable at the investigation site and these occurred at concentrations well below guidelines values for potable abstraction and supply.
Mean removals of Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni were about 98, 89, 51, and 30 per cent respectively, during steady-state operation, and Fe, Mn, and Cr all displayed reduced removals during transient changes in surface load, whereas Ni removal appeared to be relatively independent. Aluminium residuals derived from the dosed alum coagulant also showed decreases in removal from about 83 per cent during steady-state operation to between 40 and 50 per cent during transient experiments.  相似文献

The Environment Agency has a statutory duty to secure the proper use of water resources, which is now considered inter alia to include an economically efficient allocation of resources as far as is possible within the current legislation. This paper considers the practical extent to which water rights can be traded within the existing system of regulation as a means of (a) improving the economic efficiency of resource allocation, and (b) satisfying customer demand for additional supplies. Outline proposals are also made for deregulation of current legislation to encourage further trading through less restrictive regulation.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale lead-pipe rig has been developed into an accelerated test for 'plumbosolvency propensity'. High alkalinity water supplies from Anglian Water show either relatively high or low propensity characteristics which appear to be related to the form of the crystal deposit. These have been examined by scanning electron microscopy. The paper describes the uses of the test to (1) supplement random survey data, (2) investigate mixed waters, and (3) optimize orthophosphate dosing.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated the steady, two-dimensional mixed convective stagnation point flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid due to stretching of a variable thicked surface in the attendance of viscous dissipation. The flow is incompressible and laminar. The combined heat and mass transfer features are investigated. Convective and diffusion conditions are considered. The nonlinear thermal radiation, thermo-diffusion, and diffusion thermal effects are considered. The governing partial differential equations are converted to ordinary differential equations by using the appropriate similarity transformations. The obtained nonlinear and coupled ordinary differential equations are elucidated numerically using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta based shooting technique. The influence of various nondimensional parameters on the flow field like velocity, microrotation, temperature, and concentration is examined with the assistance of graphs. Results indicate that the Dufour number has a proclivity to increase the distributions of concentration and temperature correspondingly. Also, fluid temperature and concentration enhance for increasing values of the wall thickness parameter.  相似文献

A high microbiological quality of drinking water must be ensured to protect public health. The filtration techniques that are used in treating drinking water play an important role; however, a biofilm can form on granular-media filters and the accumulated bacteria can slough off and enter the filtered water.
The aim of this research was to examine (a) the potential for biofilm formation and detachment from filter sand, and (b) the effect of different backwash regimes on biofilm removal. During the operation of the filter, bacteria became attached to the sand media, particularly in the top 30 mm of the filter bed. A water-only backwash at 20% and 40% bed expansion demonstrated poor removal of biofilm throughout the depth of the bed. Collapse-pulsing is a more efficient method and results in a reduction in the number of bacteria in the filtered water.  相似文献

The interaction between the immune checkpoint PD-1 and PD−L1 promotes T-cell deactivation and cancer proliferation. Therefore, immune checkpoint inhibition therapy, which relies on prior assessment of the target, has been widely used for many cancers. As a non-invasive molecular imaging tool, radiotracers bring novel information on the in vivo expression of biomarkers (e. g., PD−L1), enabling a personalized treatment of patients. Our work aimed at the development of a PD−L1-specific, peptide-based PET radiotracer. We synthesized and evaluated a radiolabeled macrocyclic peptide adapted from a patent by Bristol Myers Squibb. Synthesis of [68Ga]Ga-NJMP1 yielded a product with a radiochemical purity>95 % that was evaluated in vitro. However, experiments on CHO−K1 hPD−L1 cells showed very low cell binding and internalization rates of [68Ga]Ga-NJMP1 in comparison to a control radiopeptide (WL12). Non-radioactive cellular assays using time-resolved fluorescence energy transfer confirmed the low affinity of the reported parent peptide and the DOTA-derivatives towards PD−L1. The results of our studies indicate that the macrocyclic peptide scaffold reported in the patent literature is not suitable for radiotracer development due to insufficient affinity towards PD−L1 and that C-terminal modifications of the macrocyclic peptide interfere with important ligand/receptor interactions.  相似文献

Agelaia-MPI and protonectin are antimicrobial peptides isolated from the wasp Parachartergus fraternus that show antimicrobial and neuroactive activities. Previously, two analogues of these peptides, neuroVAL and protonectin-F, were designed to reduce nonspecific toxicity and improve potency. Here, the three-dimensional structures of neuroVAL, protonectin and protonectin-F were determined by using circular dichroism and NMR spectroscopy. Antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxic and hemolytic activities were tested for the parent peptides and analogues. All peptides showed moderate antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with agelaia-MPI being the most active. Protonectin and protonectin-F were found to be toxic to cancerous and noncancerous cell lines. Internalization experiments revealed that these peptides accumulate inside both cell types. By contrast, neuroVAL was nontoxic to all tested cells and was able to enter cells without accumulating. In summary, neuroVAL has potential as a nontoxic cell-penetrating peptide, while protonectin-F needs further modification to realize its potential as an antitumor peptide.  相似文献

Samples were taken from 91 supplies and analyzed for total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci. The microbiological quality of the samples was generally poor, with almost 50% of the supplies failing to meet the required standards on at least one occasion. Given the high level of sanitary microbiological failures, there is the possibility that harmful microorganisms could be present and a significant risk to health cannot be discounted.  相似文献

During the dry years between 1989 and 1994, inter-basin water transfers from the Kielder system augmented flows in the River Derwent, and these flows substituted compensation releases from Derwent reservoir to retain storage for supply and recreational purposes.
The paper discusses the use of the Kielder transfers together with their impact upon (a) flow regime, (b) water quality, and (c) instream ecology of the River Derwent. Also, implications of the increasing use of water transfers in the UK are critically evaluated from the perspective of sustainability.  相似文献
