Improved mean shift target tracking based on self-organizing maps

Thanks to its simplicity and real-time processing possibility, mean shift has been widely used for video tracking. However, it often fails when the background is similar to the intended object or when the object is partially or completely occluded. To address these two problems, in this paper we propose a novel algorithm based on mean shift by exploring simultaneously the temporal and spatial information of the tracked object. A cascade classification method based on nearest neighbor and self-organizing maps is employed as a confirmation step to eliminate spurious objects through the structure information of the object. The forward and backward tracking results are further combined to improve the localization accuracy and tolerate at the same time scale variation. Experiments have shown clearly the superior performance of the proposed system in terms of accuracy, stability and robustness.

3D Printing of Mechanically Stable Calcium‐Free Alginate‐Based Scaffolds with Tunable Surface Charge to Enable Cell Adhesion and Facile Biofunctionalization

For the 3D printing of bioscaffolds, the importance of a suitable bioink cannot be overemphasized. With excellent printability and biocompatibility, alginate (Alg) is one of the most used bioinks. However, its bioinert nature and insufficient mechanical stability, due to only crosslinking via cation interactions, hinder the practical application of Alg‐based bioinks in the individualized therapy of tissue defects. To overcome these drawbacks, for the first time, an ε‐polylysine (ε‐PL)‐modified Alg‐based bioink (Alg/ε‐PL) is produced. The introduction of ε‐PL improves the printability of the Alg‐based bioink due to increasing electrostatic interactions, which enhances the self‐supporting stability of the as‐printed scaffolds. The presence of the functional crosslinking –COOH and –NH₂ groups in Alg and ε‐PL under mild conditions further enhances the mechanical stability of the scaffolds, far exceeding that of Alg/Ca²⁺ scaffolds. The surface charge of the prepared scaffolds is finely tuned by the feed ratio of Alg to ε‐PL and postimmobilization of different quantities of additional ε‐PL, with a view to enhancing cell adhesion and further biofunctionalization. The results indicate that chondroitin sulfate, an extracellular matrix component, and vascular endothelial growth factor can be successfully applied to biofunctionalize the scaffolds via electrostatic adsorption for enhanced biological activity.     

Experimental investigation on optical constants of aerosol particles

Based on the experimental infrared spectral transmittances, an inverse model for determining the optical constants of aerosol particles is presented in this paper. Combined with the Mie theory and Kramers–Kronig (K–K) relations, the complex refractive indices of the aerosol particles are retrieved by the spectral transmittance distribution of a cloud of aerosol particles in potassium bromide (KBr) pellets. Particular attention is given to the unique value problems of the complex refractive index. According to calculation and analysis, the uniqueness range of the complex refractive index is obtained. The complex refractive indices of SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, CaSO₄, Al₂O₃ particles or their mixtures with different volume fractions are obtained. At the same time, the retrieved effective refractive indices of mixed particles are compared with those from effective medium theory. Good agreement is obtained between the inverse simulation results and the results from effective medium theory. Finally, the complex refractive index of aerosol particles collected in China is determined by the inverse model used in the present work.
