Level-anchored ratio scaling, such as the Borg CR10 scale® and the Borg CR100 scale®, uses verbal anchors in congruence with numbers to give ratio data together with natural levels of intensity. This presupposes that the anchors possess natural positions in the subjective dynamic range and also “numerical” inter-relations. In an experiment, subjects had to produce a force of handgrip corresponding to their conception of “Strong”, followed by a “Maximal” performance. By using the previously found relationship between “Strong” and “Maximal” of 1:2 together with knowledge of the exponent in the power S-R-function (R = c × Sn) for grip strength, n = 1.8, predictions of individual maximal performances were obtained. The predicted values correlated 0.76 with, and deviated only 3% (ns) from, actual maximal performances of grip strength. This result –as previously also found for aerobic capacity–gives a strong support for the use of verbal anchors, so common in category scaling, also in “ratio scaling” and that the Borg CR-scales fulfill the requirements for ratio scales. For estimation of muscular strength, such as grip strength, this present study points to the value of using submaximal determinations as a compliment to maximal performances (e.g., to obtain measures of functional capacity). Interactions among growth factors are important in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. The regulation of IGF-I mRNA expression by bFGF was investigated in cultured rat Müller cells and the mechanism of regulation studied. Müller cells from 1- to 3-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats were isolated and cultured with Eagle MEM+10% FCS. Cultured cells were identified by immunocytochemistry using antibodies against vimentin, carbonic anhydrase C, and glutamine synthetase. Cells of passage 1-4 were treated with bFGF, the PKC inhibitor H-7, calphostin C, the PKC activator PMA or the PKA inhibitor H-89, as well as the adenylate cyclase activator forskolin, or adenylate cyclase inhibitor SQ22536. IGF-I and bFGF expression levels were assessed by Northern blot analysis. The addition of bFGF to culture medium down-regulated IGF-I expression in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Decrease of IGF-I expression started at a bFGF concentration of 1 ng ml-1. IGF-I mRNA level declined to 44% of baseline level at 10 ng ml-1 of bFGF, and reached a trough of 40% at 50 ng ml-1. At 10 ng ml-1 of bFGF, down-regulation of IGF-I expression was observed as early as 4 hr (60%) after treatment, and reached a trough of 42% by 8 hr. The temporal and concentration dependence of IGF-I expression by addition of the PKC activator PMA, to culture medium was similar to that due to the addition of bFGF. The down-regulation of IGF-I expression by bFGF (10 ng ml-1) and PMA (0.1 microM) was blocked by the PKC inhibitors H-7 (30 microM) and calphostin C (1 microM). Forskolin (5 microM), an adenylate cyclase activator, had activator, had no effect on IGF-I expression. SQ22536 (100 microM), an adenylate cyclase inhibitor, and H-89, a PKA inhibitor, had no inhibitory effect on bFGF-induced down-regulation of IGF-I expression. The design and performance of a self-contained microprocessor-based gamma-ray spectrometer for use in geophysical measurements using nuclear techniques is described. The instrument uses single-channel analyzers which are inherently simpler and faster than the Wilkinson or successive approximation ADC. A novel technique of gain stabilization together with a simple means of energy calibration has been developed. Astolfi, Ortega, and Venkatraman (2010) recently proved the existence of a globally exponentially convergent speed observer for general Euler–Lagrange systems. Key to their result, is a function defined by certain integrals which cannot be solved a priori, and may not have explicit analytic solutions. In this paper, this obstacle to a constructive design is removed and equations that solve the speed observer problem are given in closed form. The design is further simplified by removing up to one third of the observer states used in Astolfi et al. (2010). With the significant reduction in complexity, the new observer is easily applied to estimate the angular velocities in a Furuta pendulum example. 相似文献

Modeling the longitudinal variation of sawn timber grades in Norway spruce (Picea
abies (L.) Karst.)
Grades derived from visual assessments of sawn timber are determined by the worst part of each piece. Since grade varies longitudinally in timber, grade yield will decrease if the average length of timber increases. The variation in grade is caused by longitudinal variation in knot properties and other features as they appear on the sawn surface taken into account during grading. The objective of this study is to describe and analyze this variation in Picea abies. The study consisting of 768 boards for which all features that could lead to downgrading were recorded noting position, type and size. Based on this information, all boards were graded according to appearance by Nordic Timber, and strength by INSTA 142. Logistic regression models of grade as a function of position in the stem were developed, and the dependence between responses was taken into consideration by using General Estimating Equations (GEE). The models showed a decreasing trend in grade from the butt end toward the top end of the trees, and the effect was more pronounced in strength grading than in appearance grading. Models with binomial response and different correlation structures were tested, and it was shown that both independent and autoregressive correlation structures could be used. This suggests that a multinomial ordinal logistic regression with a GEE-approach with an independent correlation structure is appropriate for modeling grade in this study. 相似文献

There have been tremendous advances in the materials, knowledge, design, and construction of cathodes; however, widelydivergent cell operations and operating conditions present a challenge for selecting the right materials and lining design for good cell life. Cathode wear is frequently becoming the life-determining step, and, although there are questions still to be answered, it is probable that particulate detachment (physical wear) plays an important role in parallel with carbide dissolution. If wear cannot be controlled by smart design and operations, coating technology may offer benefits for extending the life of cathode linings by reducing or eliminating wear. Thus, it would also enable softer graphitic materials to be utilized more readily, and this advantage will become more important if the trend toward higher current density continues. 相似文献

This analysis pursues the underlying physics governing the expansion, dispersal and breakup of a thin walled steel right circular cylinder filled with liquid after being impacted by a high velocity aluminum sphere. The impact generates a radially expanding coherent thin shell of liquid which stays together to at least a diameter 8 times that of the original cylinder. An instability criterion is proposed and developed based on the opposing forces of stabilizing inertial pressures and destabilizing viscous resistance. This criterion is compared to test data where possible in order to ascertain its ability to predict liquid breakup of the shell. The breakup theory developed here predicts the extensive expansion of the unthickened liquid prior to fragmentation as observed in the experiments. This result lends some credence to the underlying physics pursued here and its ability to predict the onset of liquid fragmentation. 相似文献
