The fate of [1-14C] linoleic acid and [1-14C] linolenic acid in the liver slices and also in the liver tissues of live carnivorous catfish,Heteropneustes fossilis andClarias batrachus, was studied. Incorporation of the fatty acids into different lipid classes in the live fish differed greatly from the tissue slices, indicating certain physiological control operative in vivo. The extent of desaturation and chain elongation of linoleic and linolenic acids into long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids was low. Linolenic acid was oxidized (thus labeling the saturated fatty acid with liberated14C-acetyl-CoA) in preference to linoleic acid, and this oxidation also seemed to be under physiological control since both of the fatty acids were poorly oxidized in the tissue slices and in the killed fish. These fish can therefore recognize the difference in the acyl chain structures of linoleate and linolenate. The higher oxidation of liolenic acid and poor capacity for its conversion to longer chain, highly unsaturated derivatives indicates a higher demand for the dietary supply of these essential fatty acids in these two species.  相似文献

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes significant mortality and morbidity. Currently, no FDA-approved pharmacotherapy is available for treating SCI. Previously, low doses of estrogen (17β-estradiol, E2) were shown to improve the post-injury outcome in a rat SCI model. However, the range of associated side effects makes advocating its therapeutic use difficult. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the therapeutic efficacy of Premarin (PRM) in SCI. PRM is an FDA-approved E2 (10%) formulation, which is used for hormone replacement therapy with minimal risk of serious side effects. The effects of PRM on SCI were examined by magnetic resonance imaging, immunofluorescent staining, and western blot analysis in a rat model. SCI animals treated with vehicle alone, PRM, E2 receptor antagonist (ICI), or PRM + ICI were graded in a blinded way for locomotor function by using the Basso–Beattie–Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor scale. PRM treatment for 7 days decreased post-SCI lesion volume and attenuated neuronal cell death, inflammation, and axonal damage. PRM also altered the balance of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins in favor of cell survival and improved angiogenesis and microvascular growth. Increased expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) ERα and ERβ following PRM treatment and their inhibition by ER inhibitor indicated that the neuroprotection associated with PRM treatment might be E2-receptor mediated. The attenuation of glial activation with decreased inflammation and cell death, and increased angiogenesis by PRM led to improved functional outcome as determined by the BBB locomotor scale. These results suggest that PRM treatment has significant therapeutic implications for the improvement of post-SCI outcome.  相似文献

Two-dimensional nanostructures in the form of ultra-thin crystalline films of CdSe and CuSe have been prepared at the organic-aqueous interface by reacting toluene solutions of metal cupferronates with an aqueous solution of N,N-dimethyl selenourea. The films have been examined using electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy. At lower concentrations of the reacting species, the CdSe films formed at the toluene-water interface at approximately 30 degrees C consisted mostly of nanocrystals. With increase in concentration as well as temperature, the interface reaction yielded thicker films which are mostly single-crystalline. We have studied the time-dependent growth of the CdSe film at the interface using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. Ultra-thin films of CuSe formed at the toluene-water interface are generally single-crystalline.  相似文献

Radiation‐induced graft copolymerization of alpha methyl styrene (AMS)‐butyl acrylate (BA) mixture onto poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) was carried out to develop films of varying copolymer compositions. The characterization of films was carried out with fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X‐ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The presence of AMS and BA units within the film matrix was confirmed by FTIR. The intensity of the characteristic peaks for AMS and BA increased with the increasing grafted component in the films. The crystallinity of the films as observed from DSC and XRD decreased with the increasing graft levels. On the other hand, the melting temperature of the base polymer was almost unaffected by irradiation and the grafting process. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the grafted film increased as compared to the virgin PEEK. Ungrafted film showed a stable thermogram up to ~500°C. However, the grafting introduced a new decomposition range in the copolymer, due to the presence of the AMS/BA. AFM images showed the formation of domains on the grafted PEEK film surface. The SEM also showed domain formation of the grafted component within the PEEK matrix. However, the fracture analysis did not show any prominent phase separation. Additives are described which modify the free volume available for segmental motion in epoxy adhesives. Such a mechanism can produce an increase in the tensile modulus of conventional epoxy-amine systems of>60% (e.g. to>4.1 GPa) and in tensile strength of>50% (e.g. to 125 MPa), while also producing a ductile mode of failure (stress-strain curve has negative slope before failure). At low strains, a reduction in free volume hinders polymer segmental motion and so increases the modulus. However, these materials also exhibit a very low Poisson's ratio and strains of ca. 5% cause a sufficient increase in free volume that ductile failure can occur. Improvements in low temperature cure properties (e.g. 118 MPa tensile strength at 60°C cure) together with reductions in the coefficient of thermal expansion and water uptake are also reported. These improvements in bulk adhesive properties are shown to translate into improved adhesive joint performance.  相似文献

Culture broths from Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes cingulata, combined with co-factors such as hydrogen peroxide, dithiothreitol, copper, iron, and manganese ions were examined for the ability to modify lignin structure. High-performance size exclusion chromatography (HP-SEC) coupled to multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS) detection was used to determine the effect of several white rot fungi, pH values, enzymes, and co-factors on the molecular weight distribution of treated kraft lignin. The analytical procedure tracked changes in molecular weight distribution, radius of gyration, and hydrodynamic radius. Results showed changes in the molecular weight distribution of lignin components when treated with combinations of factors. The induced cultures showed more lignin depolymerization for the specific lignin samples in which they were initially grown. The distribution in the radius of gyration became narrower with time, indicating that molecular conformation changed to a more uniform molecular shape. H2O2 and DTT showed the most significant changes in lignin molecular weight distribution.  相似文献

The photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of 4-nitroaniline was studied in the presence of TiO2 suspensions in a batch and continuous annular reactor. Artificial and solar radiation was employed as sources of UV radiation. The effect of catalyst loading, pH, presence of anions and initial concentration on the rate of photocatalytic degradation was investigated. p-Aminophenol, p-benzoquinone and hydroquinone were identified as the intermediates during the degradation process. The formation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles by hydrothermal process has been studied. X‐ray Diffraction measurements were carried out to distinguish between the phases formed during the synthesis. Using the synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles, poly(vinyledene fluoride)‐Fe3O4 composite films were prepared by spin coating method. Scanning electron microscopy of the composite films showed the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the form of aggregates on the surface and inside of the porous polymer matrix. Differential Scanning calorimetry revealed that the crystallinity of PVDF decreased with the addition of Fe3O4. The conductitivity of the composite films was strongly influenced by the Fe3O4 content; conductivity increased with increase in Fe3O4 content. Vibration sample magnetometry results revealed the ferromagnetic behavior of the synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles with a Ms value of 74.50 emu/g. Progress in the field of femtogram (10−15 g) mass delivery relies on finding dependable transport vehicles and uncomplicated methods to tailor the deposition of active substances. Here, current-conductive containers consisting of turbostratic carbon nanotubes were used to store a light-emitting ternary alloy and guide its delivery on demand. We found that the electrically-activated delivery process of this sublimable compound, performed inside a transmission electron microscope, was highly dependent on factors such as the substrate type and current injection mode. Furthermore, our observations suggest that the alleged “missing matter” problem is not solely due to surface migration. Besides extending the field of electrical delivery to the realm of functional materials, the extrusion and mass transport of a sublimable II–VI compound demonstrates that it is possible to guide vapor migration using a carbon nanotube support.  相似文献
