As on land, plants are the real producers in the sea, and on them depend all marine living resources and the basic sustainability of ecosystems. Primary production is performed by chlorophyll-bearing plants ranging from the tiny phytoplankton to the giant kelps through the process ofphotosynthesis. Zooplankton play an important role as secondary producers, and together with phytoplankton they support the vast assemblages of marine food chain with all their diversity and complexity. Data on chlorophyll pigments, phytoplankton and zooplankton are regarded as a sound basis for environmental appraisal of ecosystems. This paper presents a set of data collected from the Saudi Arabian coastal waters near the desalination plants in AI-Jubail. Materials were collected from six different sites covering the intake and discharge zones during cruises carried out in 1997-1998. Analyses of chlorophyll pigments were made using the spectrophotometric method. Plankton samples were collected using a Nansen plankton net with a mesh size of 75 μ and analyzed following standard procedures. Chlorophyll a, b, c and phaeophytin are the most commonly occurring pigments in seawater. Their concentrations showed wide fluctuation. The phytoplankton community was composed of 35 genera representing the Diatoms, Dinoflagellates and blue- green algae. Zooplankton were composed ofProtozoa, Coelenterata, Ctenophora, Aschelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata and Chordata. Arthropoda, represented by Cladocera, Copepoda and Crustacean larvae, formed the largest group followed by Chordata. The distribution of phyto- and zooplankton was examined and discussed on a seasonal, annual and inter-annual basis. In terms of species, overall species composition was not affected by plant discharge. The study brings out a greater understanding of the changes experienced by biotic communities as a result of impingement, entrainment and entrapment consequent to water passage through the plant structures. The study reflects the ecological relationships that the phytoplankton and the zooplankton of the region possess with respect to intake and discharge. Further, the study has brought to light a very redeeming feature of the ecosystem to sustain its productivity and planktonic abundance. It was observed that seawater temperature, conductivity and total suspended solids did not act as limiting factors. Besides throwing much light on the little known biological aspects of desalination sites, the data provided constitute a significant addition to the knowledge base of marine living resources in an industrial zone of Gulf coastal waters.  相似文献

A partex surface was modified by a UV‐curing system with epoxy acrylate (EB‐600). A set of formulations was prepared with oligomer and the trifunctional monomer trimethylol propane triacrylate in different combinations of percentages (1–5%) of sand to study the role of sand in various physical properties of UV‐cured thin films, as well as partex surfaces. Increased pendulum hardness (PH), gloss, adhesion, and abrasion values were obtained by the addition of sand into the partex surfaces. The best results were obtained with the formulation containing 3% sand. An enhanced PH and a decreased percentage of gel content of the UV‐cured film was observed with an increase of the sand concentration. A simulated weathering test was performed with partex surfaces cured by a formulation containing 3% sand in the base coat. The losses of the physical properties were found to be lower over the surface treated with the formulation containing sand. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon fibers were prepared from silk fibers after an iodine treatment and the carbon yield, fiber morphology, structure and mechanical properties were investigated. A single or multi-step carbonization process was used for the preparation. In the single step process, silk fibroin (SF) fibers were heated from 25 to 800 °C with a heating rate of 5 °C min−1 under Ar atmosphere. However, the carbon fiber obtained was partially melted and was too fragile to handle. For better performance, SF fibers were treated with iodine vapor at 100 °C for 12 h and untreated and iodinated SF fibers were heated from 25 to 800 °C by a multi-step carbonization process, which was defined based on the optimum thermal degradation rate of silk. In this multi-step process, the carbon fibers obtained from iodinated SF were structurally intact and stable in appearance, and the carbon yield achieved was ca. 36 wt.%, much higher than the value for untreated SF. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopic observation revealed that the obtained carbon fibers from both untreated and iodinated SFs had a basically amorphous structure. The strength of carbon fibers prepared from iodinated SF using the multi-step carbonization was considerably increased compared to that of untreated SF. According to viscoelastic measurement, by heating above 280 °C the iodine introduced intermolecular cross-linking of the SF, and its melt flow was inhibited which produced a higher yield and better performance of the carbon fiber.  相似文献

Graphite electrodes were prepared by mixing calcined coke and coal tar pitch. They were pressed under 250 kg cm–2 and heat treated up to 2800° C. Rectangles measuring 70 mm x 40 mm x 8 mm were anodically polarized under galvanostatic and potentiostatic conditions. Electrolyses were conducted at 10–50 mA cm–2 for periods ranging from 10–120 hours in Na2SO4 solutions acidified with sulphuric acid to various pH values. The wear of graphite anodes increased with decreasing bath temperature, increasing acid concentration, decreasing pH of the electrolyte and increasing current density. A model is suggested which assumes that corrosion takes place via the formation of a lamellar crystal compound with the formula (C 8 0 O)(OH)3HSO 4 ·2H2SO4.The compound is unstable at higher temperatures when corrosion is effected by oxidation of graphite by atomic oxygen. The formation of the carbon ions was found to be a necessary precondition for the formation of the complex.  相似文献

Grafting of acrylamide (AAm) onto oil palm empty fruits bunch fiber using hydrogen peroxide as initiator and methyl acrylate as comonomer was investigated. The amount of comonomer needed to make grafting of acrylamide possible was determined. The percentage of poly(acrylamide) and the comonomer in the final graft copolymer was estimated by elemental analysis. Results obtained indicated that methyl acrylate facilitated the incorporation of acrylamide monomer onto OPEFB. The reactivity ratios for both monomers were determined by using Fineman–Ross plot. The effects of reaction temperature and period as well as amount of the initiator, solvent, monomer and comonomer on the percentage of grafting at fixed amount of comonomer (11 mmol) were studied. Maximum percentage of grafting was achieved when the amount of initiator and solvent 3.98×10−3 mol and 50 mL respectively. The optimum reaction temperature was 50 C and the reaction period was 90 min. Highest percentage of grafting was 232% when 25.6 mmol of acrylamide was used under these optimum conditions. The presence of functional group in the grafted polymer is characterized by infrared spectroscopy and the surface morphology is observed by scanning electron microscopy. Thermoanalytic investigation on OPEFB and OPEFB-g-PAAM were carried out to evaluate the thermal stability and respective activation energy of the materials.  相似文献

The kernels of 10 different mango varieties were extracted. The physico-chemical characteristics and lipid class composition of fats were studied. The fat content of mango kernels grown under the soil and climatic conditions of Bangladesh varied from 7.1% to 10%, depending on the variety. The total lipid extracts were fractionated into lipid classes by a combination of column and thin layer chromatography (TLC). The hydrocarbon and sterol esters varied from 0.3% to 0.7%, triglycerides from 55.6% to 91.5%, partial glycerides from 2.3% to 4% and free sterol from 0.3% to 0.6%. Free fatty acids amounted to 3.0–37% as oleic; glycolipids were 0.6–1.2% and phospholipids 0.11–0.8%. The fatty acid composition of triglyceride (TG) fractions was analyzed by gas liquid chromatography (GLC). Palmitic acid varied from 7.9 molar % to 10.0 molar %, stearic from 38.2% to 40.2%, oleic from 41.1% to 43.8%, linoleic from 6.0% to 7.6%, linolenic from 0.6% to 1.0% and arachidic acid from 1.7% to 2.6%. TLC revealed the presence of lyso-phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidic acid in the phospholipid fraction.  相似文献

The application of a low temperature ashing method for estimating total residual organic matter (toluene insolubles) in oil sands is described. A linear correlation exists between organic carbon content and loss on ignition at 400 ± 10 °C of solvent extracted oil sands. The ratio between total organic carbon and the weight loss on ignition (CT/LOl) owing to the removal of residual organic matter is much lower than that obtained for toluene soluble bitumen fractions, indicating very different chemical composition for the residual organic matter. The measured carbon content of the residual organic matter in oil sands suggests that this material could be a mixture of various fractions contained in resins, asphaltenes, asphaltic acids and humic acids.  相似文献

The effects of scraped-surface tube cooler temperatures on the isothermal solid fat content (SFC) of palm oil margarine during processing and on margarine consistency (yield value, g/cm2), SFC, and polymorphic changes in storage were studied. SFC was measured in the mixing tank after leaving the tube cooler and the pin worker. The SFC at the tube cooler exit was proportional to the amount of cooling; a higher SFC was produced by more extreme cooling treatment. The SFC of all margarines were reduced in the pin worker, and the reduction was related to the initial SFC profile of palm oil. Margarine samples were stored at 28°C for 28 d and tested daily. Margarine processed at 25°C in the tube cooler had the highest consistency and the least change in SFC, but by the second week crystals had transformed into the β form. Uniform product consistency and SFC were observed in margarines processed at 20 and 15°C. These margarines retained the β′ crystal form for 3 and 4 wk, respectively. The best palm oil margarine was obtained with a tube cooler temperature of 15°C and a residence time of 1.8 min.  相似文献
