Blends of wheat flour (WF) and African yam bean water-extractable proteins (AYBWEP) were processed into bread and cookies in the following ratios: 100: 0; 95: 5; 90: 10; 85: 15; 80: 20. The proximate composition, physical, chemical properties and sensory properties of bread and cookies samples from the blends were determined. Breads and cookies produced from the resultant blends were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in protein (16.39% – 18.36%) than the control (11.80% – 12.58%). Carbohydrate content decreased from 60.74% with addition of AYBWEP to 52.81% following 20% substitution. The pH of bread samples prepared from whole wheat flour and blends of wheat flour and AYBWEP were significantly different (p < 0.05) while bulk density and specific volume were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The pH of bread samples and cookies decreased with increase in the proportion of the AYBWEP blend from 5% to 20%. The highest specific volume (3.70 ml/g) was observed in bread samples prepared from the control 100: 0 blends while the 80:20 blends had the lowest specific volume (3.10 ml/g). There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the bulk density and thickness of the cookies. The cookies prepared using 80: 20 blends had the higher diameter (22.53 cm) and spread factor (54.03 cm) compared to the control. Generally, acceptability of the bread and cookies decreased with higher ratios of AYBWEP inclusion. The sensory acceptability scores showed the best AYBWEP substitution level for making bread and cookies was 5% and 10% of the AYBWEP respectively. Polypropylene (PP) composites filled with wood flour (WF) were prepared with a twin‐screw extruder and an injection‐molding machine. Three types of ecologically friendly flame retardants (FRs) based on ammonium polyphosphate were used to improve the FR properties of the composites. The flame retardancy of the PP/WF composites was characterized with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vertical burn testing (UL94‐V), and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements. The TGA data showed that all three types of FRs could enhance the thermal stability of the PP/WF/FR systems at high temperatures and effectively increase the char residue formation. The FRs could effectively reduce the flammability of the PP/WF/FR composites by achieving V‐0 UL94‐V classification. The increased LOI also showed that the flammability of the PP/WF/FR composites was reduced with the addition of FRs. The mechanical property study revealed that, with the incorporation of FRs, the tensile strength and flexural strength were decreased, but the tensile and flexural moduli were increased in all cases. The presence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) resulted in an improvement of the filler–matrix bonding between the WF/intumescent FR and PP, and this consequently enhanced the overall mechanical properties of the composites. Morphological studies carried out with scanning electron microscopy revealed clear evidence that the adhesion at the interfacial region was enhanced with the addition of MAPP to the PP/WF/FR composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, two different types of tropical fruit waste flour, rambutan waste flour (RWF) and banana waste flour (BWF), were blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) by solution casting method. The structure of the blend film was characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The tensile strength and elongation at break of tropical fruit waste flour-filled polyvinyl alcohol were lower, but the tensile modulus was higher, than that of PVOH film. The effect of different processing routes on structure and properties of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)‐clay nanocomposites was assessed. Different compatibilizer/clay ratios (α) were also studied to determine if interactions exist between processing route and polymer‐clay compatibility. HDPE/HDPE‐g‐MA/clay with α values of 1 to 4 were melt compounded (twin screw extrusion), and then processed via three routes: compression moulding, compression moulding followed by biaxial stretching or blown film extrusion. The structure was examined using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tensile and oxygen barrier properties were determined. It was found that biaxial extensional forming produced the best enhancement in properties. An interaction between processing route and polymer‐clay compatibility is evident. Halpin‐Tsai (H‐T) model was employed to predict relative modulus values. It showed good agreement with the experimental data. For biaxial extension at α = 4.0, the experimental relative modulus is greater than the predicted value. This may indicate the existence of a “nano” effect at the polymer‐clay interface. POLYM. ENG. Supported nickel oxide based catalysts were prepared by wetness impregnation method for the in-situ reactions of H2S desulfurization and CO2 methanation from ambient temperature up to 300 °C. Fe/Co/Ni (10:30:60)–Al2O3 and Pr/Co/Ni (5:35:60)–Al2O3 catalysts were revealed as the most potential catalysts, which yielded 2.9% and 6.1% of CH4 at reaction temperature of 300 °C, respectively. Brown Irish edible seaweeds, Himanthalia elongata, Laminaria sachharina and Laminaria digitata, were evaluated for the microbiota in raw and heat processed form. Raw seaweeds showed complete absence of aerobic mesophiles, halophiles, yeasts and molds. However, heating at 85 °C for 15 min resulted in spore germination. Bacterial counts as high as 107 were observed for aerobic mesophiles and halophiles. Heating above 95 °C for 15 min resulted in complete inactivation of surface microflora. Bacteria belonging to Bacillaceae, Paenibacillaceae, Moraxellaceae and Enterobacteriaceae family were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. In vitro antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extracts of the seaweed on food pathogenic and food spoilage bacteria were also evaluated. The seaweeds in their raw state had almost 100% inhibition against Listeria monocytogenes; 98% and 93% inhibition was achieved against Pseudomonas aeruginosa by H. elongata and L. saccharina extracts, respectively. Heating the seaweeds resulted in the reduction of antimicrobial activity as compared to raw. The effect was more pronounced against Gram negative bacteria. 相似文献

This paper aims to evaluate the cylinder head carbon deposit from diesel engine fuelled by four samples of diesel fuel emulsions containing 0%; 5%; 10% and 15% vol. water and 20% Palm Oil Methyl Ester (POME) were subjected to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DSC) in air medium. The deposit build up processes were performed on a single-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine for period of 25 h for each set of test fuel under constant speed 2500 rpm. The TGA system was used and then correlated with elemental analysis as well as infrared spectra for microscopic observations. It has been found that, as the water increases in fuel, less aromatic and less reactive of deposits would be formed. Therefore, such method of analyses can be used as an indicator to verify the stability of carbon deposit inside the combustion chamber that could substantiate the applicability of a particular fuel to be accepted. 相似文献

Utilization of a porous medium for combustion of liquid fuels is proved to be a promising approach for future applications. The porous medium burner for liquid fuels is more advantageous than the conventional open spray flame burner for several reasons; these include enhanced evaporation of droplet spray owing to regenerative combustion characteristics, low emission of pollutants, high combustion intensity with moderate turn-down ratio and compactness. This article provides a comprehensive picture of the global scenario of research and developments in combustion of liquid fuels within a porous medium that enable a researcher to determine the direction of further investigation. Accordingly, a glossary of the important terminology, the modeling approach, advances in numerical and experimental works and applications are included.
