Iron oxide nanoparticles are formidable multifunctional systems capable of contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging, guidance under remote fields, heat generation, and biodegradation. Yet, this potential is underutilized in that each function manifests at different nanoparticle sizes. Here, sub‐micrometer discoidal magnetic nanoconstructs are realized by confining 5 nm ultra‐small super‐paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (USPIOs) within two different mesoporous structures, made out of silicon and polymers. These nanoconstructs exhibit transversal relaxivities up to ≈10 times (r 2 ≈ 835 mm ?1 s?1) higher than conventional USPIOs and, under external magnetic fields, collectively cooperate to amplify tumor accumulation. The boost in r 2 relaxivity arises from the formation of mesoscopic USPIO clusters within the porous matrix, inducing a local reduction in water molecule mobility as demonstrated via molecular dynamics simulations. The cooperative accumulation under static magnetic field derives from the large amount of iron that can be loaded per nanoconstuct (up to ≈65 fg) and the consequential generation of significant inter‐particle magnetic dipole interactions. In tumor bearing mice, the silicon‐based nanoconstructs provide MRI contrast enhancement at much smaller doses of iron (≈0.5 mg of Fe kg?1 animal) as compared to current practice.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the thermal performance of a solar air heater having its flow channel packed with Raschig rings. The packing improves the heat transfer from the plate to the air flow underneath. The dimensions of the heater are 0.9 m wide and 1.9 m long. The aluminium‐based absorber plate was coated with ordinary black paint. The characteristic diameter of the Raschig rings, made of black polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tube, is 50 mm and the depth of the packed‐bed in flow channel is 60 mm. Energy and exergy analyses were applied for evaluating the efficiency of the packed‐bed solar air heater. The rate of heat recovered from the packed‐bed solar air heater varied between 9.3 and 151.5 W m?2, while the rate of thermal exergy recovered from the packed‐bed solar air heater varied between 0.04 and 8.77 W m?2 during the charging period. The net energy efficiency varied from 2.05 to 33.78%, whereas the net exergy efficiency ranged from 0.01 to 2.16%. It was found that the average daily net energy and exergy efficiencies were 17.51 and 0.91%, respectively. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the packed‐bed solar air heater increased as the outlet temperature of heat transfer fluid increased. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of these experiments was to test the hypothesis that endurance exercise training will reduce myocardial lipid peroxidation following short-term ischemia and reperfusion (I-R). METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (4 months old) were randomly assigned to either a sedentary control group (N = 13) or to an exercise training group (N = 13). The exercise trained animals ran 4 d.wk-1 (90 min.d-1) at approximately 75% V02max. Following a 10-wk training program, animals were anesthetized, mechanically ventilated, and the chest was opened by thoracotomy. Coronary occlusion was achieved by a ligature around the left coronary artery; occlusion was maintained for 5 min followed by a 10-min period of reperfusion. RESULTS: Although training did not alter (P > 0.05) myocardial activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase), training was associated with significant increase (P > 0.05) in heat shock protein (HSP72) in the left ventricle. Compared with controls, trained animals exhibited significantly lower levels (P < 0.05) of myocardial lipid peroxidation following I-R. CONCLUSION: These data support the hypothesis that exercise training provides protection against myocardial lipid peroxidation induced by short-term I-R in vivo.  相似文献

The loss of neocortical synapses that occurs in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been shown to correlate with cognitive decline. In addition, marked losses in the cholinergic system in AD, specifically choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity and high affinity presynaptic neuronal nicotinic cholinergic receptors (nAChRs), have also been described. We hypothesized that in AD, the loss of [3H]-ligand binding to nAChRs, which are largely presynaptic, would correlate with changes in two other presynaptic markers: synaptophysin (Syn), a measure of synaptic density, and ChAT activity. The midfrontal (MF) cortex of 36 autopsy confirmed (NIA and CERAD criteria) AD patients (mean death age +/- SD 80.1 +/- 8.4 years) who met NINDS-ADRDA criteria for a clinical diagnosis of probable or possible AD, and 11 nondemented controls (mean death age +/- SD 77.9 +/- 8.0) were examined. Synapse counts were quantified by a dotimmunobinding assay for Syn. ChAT activity was assessed by standard biochemical assays. Nicotinic cholinergic receptor binding was assayed using the high affinity nicotinic agonist [3H]-(+/-)-epibatidine ([3H]-EPI). The mean +/- SD Syn in AD (83.4 +/- 31.9 arbitrary units (AU)/mg protein) was significantly lower than controls (126.1 +/- 19.9, p = 0.0003; t-test). The mean ChAT activity in AD (139.0 +/- 75.6 nmol ACh/hr/100 mg protein) was significantly lower than controls (219.6 +/- 70.8, p = 0.004). The mean [3H]-EPI total binding in AD (6.2 +/- 2.8 fmol/mg protein) was significantly lower than controls (14.8 +/- 3.2; p < 0.0001). Syn correlated with [3H]-EPI binding in AD (r = 0.48, p = 0.006; Pearson) but ChAT did not (r = -0.20, p = 0.34). We conclude that loss of high affinity nAChR binding correlates with loss of synapses in AD. The lack of correlation between [3H]-EPI binding and ChAT activity suggests that the targeted receptor populations may not be located exclusively on cholinergic neurons.  相似文献

We studied the shear response of a confined lubricant layer on approach of the transition to sliding with a surface force apparatus modified for oscillatory shear. In a given experiment, we found that the transition to sliding occurred always around the same deformation amplitude although the shear stress needed to initiate sliding varied up to a factor of two depending on sample history. This suggests the concept of deformation-controlled switching from rest to sliding. The elastic spring-constant, in the stick state, weakened with increasing deformation amplitude. This decrease can be described by a power law when plotted versus the distance to a critical deformation amplitude. The build-up of solid-like behavior after sliding stopped was also gradual and was consistent with a logarithmic time dependence. We suggest a model relating the gradual decrease of stiffness to weakening of the boundary layer, specifically to destruction of some elastic links between molecules or between molecules and the solid surfaces. Static friction (the force that must be overcome at the onset of kinetic motion) is proportional to the number of such links formed during the time of stick.  相似文献

An experience with 103 children treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is reviewed in this report. The success rate was 63%. The stone volume was of major importance for the result. There was a continuous decrease in success rate with increasing stone size. It was also shown that stone-free rates decreased with an increasing number of stones. Short-term complications were minor and hospitalization times were short. It is concluded that ESWL is a first-choice treatment in children with urinary calculi smaller than 200 mm2 in size.  相似文献
