Activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs in soil samples collected from the most populous area of southern Punjab of Pakistan have been measured by gamma-ray spectrometry. The measured activity concentrations for these radionuclides are compared with the reported data from different other countries and it is found that measured activity concentrations are comparable with the worldwide measured average values reported by the UNSCEAR. Subsequently assessed radiological effects show that the mean radium equivalent activity (Ra(eq)) is 96.7 +/- 15.2 Bq kg(-1) and air absorbed dose rate (D) is 46.1 +/- 7.3 nGy h(-1). The values of internal and external radiation hazard indices are found to be less than unity. The annual effective radiation dose is calculated to be 0.28 +/- 0.05 mSv, which is well below the limit of 1.0 mSv y(-1) recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, for the general public.  相似文献

We have been successful in obtaining monophasic nanosized oxides with varying chemical compositions using the reverse micellar method. Here we describe our methodology to obtain important metal oxides like ceria, zirconia and zinc oxide. The oxalate of cerium, zirconium and zinc were synthesized using the reverse micellar route. While nanorods of zinc oxalate with dimension, 120 nm in diameter and 600 nm in length, could be obtained, whereas spherical particles of size, 4–6 nm, were obtained for cerium oxalate. These precursors were heated to form their respective oxides. Mixture of nanorods and nanoparticles of cerium oxide was obtained. ZrO2 nanoparticles of 3–4 nm size were obtained by the thermal decomposition of zirconium oxalate precursor. ZnO nanoparticles (55 nm) were obtained by the decomposition of zinc oxalate nanorods. Photoluminescence (PL) studies at 20 K shows the presence of three peaks corresponding to free excitonic emission, free to bound and donor-acceptor transitions. We also synthesized nanoparticles corresponding to Ba1−x Pb x ZrO3 using the reverse micellar route. The dielectric constant and loss were stable with frequency and temperature for the solid solution.  相似文献

In engineering practice, moisture absorption test is generally used for quality control purposes and to measure the degradation of the quality for the composite materials. The objectives of this study are to investigate the value of Fickian diffusivity constant, moisture equilibrium content and correction factor for the natural fiber composites. Tests were carried out on composite plates, which was a combination of sugar palm fiber and epoxy resins and two different fiber compositions have been chosen which were 10% and 20% by weight. Pure epoxy plates have been used for the control measures. The specimens were oven dried for 60 h in an air-circulating oven operated with 108 °C before being immersed in the constant temperature water bath, which the distilled water was set at 40 °C for the moisture absorption behavior test for 33 days. From this study, plates with 20% fiber loading possessed the highest amount of moisture prior to the moisture absorption behavior test, which is 0.93%. In moisture absorption behavior test, the corrected value of Fickian diffusivity constant for the 20% fiber loading is 3.76 × 10−7 mm2/s, which is the highest among other composites. It is shown that, for composite plates that contain higher fiber composition, the moisture absorption rate is even higher.  相似文献

Removal and recovery of zirconium from dilute aqueous solutions by Candida tropicalis used as biosorbent, was studied by performing biosorption-desorption tests. This biosorbent was selected after screening a range of microbial species. The process was found to be highly dependent on initial pH and concentration of metal solution. At optimized experimental parameters, the maximum zirconium biosorption capacity of C. tropicalis was 179 mg Zr g(-1) dry weight of biosorbent. The adsorption distribution coefficient value of 3968 ml g(-1) was obtained for zirconium biosorption by C. tropicalis. Different theoretical thermodynamic models governing the adsorption behavior of zirconium were also tested. Zirconium biosorption was found to closely follow the Langmuir model. At low biomass concentrations it was found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetics. However when higher biomass concentrations were used kinetics was changed to pseudo-second-order. The zirconium bound to the biomass was stripped out (60.2% at S/L of 1.0 g of zirconium loaded biomass/l of eluent) using sodium bicarbonate and the biomass could be used for multiple sorption-desorption cycles.  相似文献

The paper presents a Bayes' method for augmenting generic equipment failure data with a prior distribution - predicated on the evidence, e.g., plant data - resulting in a posterior distribution. The depth of the evidence is significant in shaping the characteristics of the posterior distribution. In conditions of insufficient data about the prior distribution or great uncertainty in the generic data sources, we may use "constrained non-informative priors". This representation of the prior preserves the mean value of the failure rate estimate and maintains a broad uncertainty range to accommodate the site-specific event data. Although the methodology and the case study presented in this paper focus on the calculation of a time-based (i.e., failures per unit time) failure rate, based on a Poisson likelihood function and the conjugate gamma distribution, a similar method applies to the calculation of demand failure rates utilizing the binomial likelihood function and its conjugate beta distribution.  相似文献

In this paper, the ability of coconut bunch waste (CBW), an agricultural waste available in large quantity in Malaysia, to remove basic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solution by adsorption was studied. Batch mode experiments were conducted at 30 degrees C to study the effects of pH and initial concentration of methylene blue (MB). Equilibrium adsorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models of adsorption. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm and the monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 70.92 mg/g at 30 degrees C. The kinetic data obtained at different concentrations have been analyzed using a pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order equation and intraparticle diffusion equation. The experimental data fitted very well the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.  相似文献

The performance of silver-loaded zeolite (HY and HZSM-5) catalysts in the oxidation of butyl acetate as a model volatile organic compound (VOC) was studied. The objective was to find a catalyst with superior activity, selectivity towards deep oxidation product and stability. The catalyst activity was measured under excess oxygen condition in a packed bed reactor operated at gas hourly space velocity (GHSV)=15,000-32,000 h(-1), reaction temperature between 150 and 500 degrees C and butyl acetate inlet concentration of 1000-4000 ppm. Both AgY and AgZSM-5 catalysts exhibited high activity in the oxidation of butyl acetate. Despite lower silver content, AgY showed better activity, attributed to better metal dispersion, surface characteristics and acidity, and its pore system. Total conversion of butyl acetate was achieved at above 400 degrees C. The oxidation of butyl acetate followed a simple power law model. The reaction orders, n and m were evaluated under differential mode by varying the VOC partial pressure between 0.004 and 0.018 atm and partial pressure of oxygen between 0.05 and 0.20 atm. The reaction rate was independent of oxygen concentration and single order with respect to VOC concentration. The activation energies were 19.78 kJ/mol for AgY and 32.26 kJ/mol for AgZSM-5, respectively.  相似文献

In order to produce sufficient food supply for the ever-increasing human population, pesticides usage is indispensable in the agriculture sector to control crop losses. However, the effect of pesticides on the environment is very complex as undesirable transfers occur continually among different environmental sections. This eventually leads to contamination of drinking water source especially for rivers located near active agriculture practices. This paper studied the application of nanofiltration membrane in the removal of dimethoate and atrazine in aqueous solution. Dimethoate was selected as the subject of study since it is being listed as one of the pesticides in guidelines for drinking water by World Health Organization. Nevertheless, data on effectiveness of dimethoate rejection using membranes has not been found so far. Meanwhile, atrazine is classified as one of the most commonly used pesticides in Malaysia. Separation was done using a small batch-type membrane separation cell with integrated magnetic stirrer while concentration of dimethoate and atrazine in aqueous solution was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Four nanofiltration membranes NF90, NF200, NF270 and DK were tested for their respective performance to separate dimethoate and atrazine. Of all four membranes, NF90 showed the best performance in retention of dimethoate and atrazine in water.  相似文献

Adsorption isotherm and kinetics of methylene blue on activated carbon prepared from coconut husk were determined from batch tests. The effects of contact time (1-30 h), initial dye concentration (50-500 mg/l) and solution temperature (30-50 degrees C) were investigated. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. The equilibrium data were best represented by Langmuir isotherm model, showing maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 434.78 mg/g. The kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models, and was found to follow closely the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy (DeltaH degrees), standard entropy (DeltaS degrees) and standard free energy (DeltaG degrees) were evaluated. The adsorption interaction was found to be exothermic in nature. Coconut husk-based activated carbon was shown to be a promising adsorbent for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Diclofenac-bismuth complexation was attempted by mixing diclofenac sodium (Na) and bismuth-subcitrate aqueous solutions at diclofenac:bismuth molar ratio of 3:1. A solid precipitate was obtained and isolated. The precipitate was characterized for stoichiometric ratio of diclofenac-bismuth complexation using capillary electrophoresis, which showed 1:1 complexation. In addition, nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared analysis were performed for the isolated solid complex and indicated that bismuth was in coordinate bond formation with the carboxylate group of diclofenac. In comparison with diclofenac Na powder, the complex was evaluated as an aqueous suspension for in vitro drug dissolution. The complex exhibited a faster dissolution rate than and similar dissolution extent as diclofenac Na. In comparison with an aqueous solution of diclofenac Na and an aqueous suspension of physical mixture of diclofenac acid (suspended) and bismuth-subcitrate (dissolved), the aqueous complex suspension was evaluated for ulcerogenic effect in rats upon oral administration. The complex led to more gastric ulceration than diclofenac Na, which was not in accordance with the antiulcer properties of bismuth. This antiulcer effect was shown as the physical mixture administration was accompanied with lower gastric ulceration than diclofenac Na administration. These gastric ulceration results were explained in terms of the difference in particle size between solid diclofenac acid formed as a result of the complex breakdown in an acidic medium (0.1 M HCl to simulate the gastric fluid) and that formed as a result of diclofenac Na neutralization. Diclofenac acid particles formed from the complex breakdown were of average size, three times smaller of those formed as a result of diclofenac Na protonation. This difference in particle size was correlated with the higher gastric ulceration associated with the complex than with diclofenac Na in terms of higher coverage of the gastric mucosa with diclofenac, and consequently, higher local ulceration.  相似文献
