We have measured the nuclear specific heat of a 0.79 mole thallium sample of 5 N+ purity in the temperature range 70 µKT20 mK and in magnetic fields from 20 mTB228 mT. The experimental results agree with the theoretical expectation for the specific heat of a nuclear paramagnet with the properties of Tl. Our results for the nuclear specific heat imply that the static properties of bulk Tl seem to differ from the dynamic, surface-sensitive properties of Tl samples investigated in former nuclear magnetic resonance experiments.  相似文献

We report the implementation of an electrostatic Einzel lens (Boersch) phase plate in a prototype transmission electron microscope dedicated to aberration-corrected cryo-EM. The combination of phase plate, Cs corrector and Diffraction Magnification Unit (DMU) as a new electron-optical element ensures minimal information loss due to obstruction by the phase plate and enables in-focus phase contrast imaging of large macromolecular assemblies. As no defocussing is necessary and the spherical aberration is corrected, maximal, non-oscillating phase contrast transfer can be achieved up to the information limit of the instrument. A microchip produced by a scalable micro-fabrication process has 10 phase plates, which are positioned in a conjugate, magnified diffraction plane generated by the DMU. Phase plates remained fully functional for weeks or months. The large distance between phase plate and the cryo sample permits the use of an effective anti-contaminator, resulting in ice contamination rates of <0.6 nm/h at the specimen. Maximal in-focus phase contrast was obtained by applying voltages between 80 and 700 mV to the phase plate electrode. The phase plate allows for in-focus imaging of biological objects with a signal-to-noise of 5-10 at a resolution of 2-3 nm, as demonstrated for frozen-hydrated virus particles and purple membrane at liquid-nitrogen temperature.  相似文献

In this theoretical study we analyze contrast transfer of weak-phase objects in a transmission electron microscope, which is equipped with an aberration corrector (C(s)-corrector) in the imaging lens system and a physical phase plate in the back focal plane of the objective lens. For a phase shift of pi/2 between scattered and unscattered electrons induced by a physical phase plate, the sine-type phase contrast transfer function is converted into a cosine-type function. Optimal imaging conditions could theoretically be achieved if the phase shifts caused by the objective lens defocus and lens aberrations would be equal to zero. In reality this situation is difficult to realize because of residual aberrations and varying, non-zero local defocus values, which in general result from an uneven sample surface topography. We explore the conditions--i.e. range of C(s)-values and defocus--for most favourable contrast transfer as a function of the information limit, which is only limited by the effect of partial coherence of the electron wave in C(s)-corrected transmission electron microscopes. Under high-resolution operation conditions we find that a physical phase plate improves strongly low- and medium-resolution object contrast, while improving tolerance to defocus and C(s)-variations, compared to a microscope without a phase plate.  相似文献

Within the colorful tapestry of colonial possessions the German empire acquired over the short period of its existence, Qingdao stands out because it fulfilled a different role from settlements in Africa—especially because of its exemplary planned water infrastructure: its technological model, the resulting (public) hygiene, and the adjunct brewery. The National Naval Office (Reichsmarineamt), which oversaw the administration of the future “harbour colony”—at first little more than a little fishing village—enjoyed a remarkable degree of freedom in implementing this project. The German government invested heavily in showing off its techno-cultural achievements to China and the world and thereby massively exploited the natural resources of the mountainous interior. This contribution focuses on Qingdao’s water infrastructure and its role in public hygiene and further area development. This article will not only use new empirical evidence to demonstrate that the water infrastructure was an ambivalent “tool of empire”. Relying on the concept of “urban metabolism,” this paper primarily traces the ecological consequences, particularly the landscape transformation of the mountains surrounding the bay and the implications for the region’s water resources. When evaluating colonial enterprises, changes in local ecology should play a significantly greater role.  相似文献

For a number of programming languages, among them Eiffel, C, Java, and Ruby, Hoare-style logics and dynamic logics have been developed. In these logics, pre- and postconditions are typically formulated using potentially effectful programs. In order to ensure that these pre- and postconditions behave like logical formulae (that is, enjoy some kind of referential transparency), a notion of purity is needed. Here, we introduce a generic framework for reasoning about purity and effects. Effects are modelled abstractly and axiomatically, using Moggi’s idea of encapsulation of effects as monads. We introduce a dynamic logic (from which, as usual, a Hoare logic can be derived) whose logical formulae are pure programs in a strong sense. We formulate a set of proof rules for this logic, and prove it to be complete with respect to a categorical semantics. Using dynamic logic, we then develop a relaxed notion of purity which allows for observationally neutral effects such writing on newly allocated memory.  相似文献

The problems ofstate observation and diagnosis are solved for discrete–eventsystems, which are described by stochastic automata. As manysystems are not observable in the sense that it is possible toreconstruct the state unambiguously, the observation problemis set up as the problem of determining the smallest possibleset of states that are compatible with the measured input andoutput sequences. The diagnostic problem is shown to be, in principle,an observation problem. Conditions for the observability anddiagnosability of stochastic automata are presented. These are the results of 417 primary vaccinations against smallpox with MVA, an attenuated vaccine. All of the patients were over three years old. In Europe, this group has an increased risk of postvaccinal encephalitis. The intracutaneous inoculation produced a light local infiltration and only 11.7% showed a light generalized reaction. In order to attain a reliable immunity, a second inoculation was performed one week later, epicutaneously with Elstree-vaccine. The local reaction was in general that of a normal revaccination, and 79.4% of our patients had neither fever nor general symptoms. Among the others no one became seriously ill. We did not observe any complications specific for a smallpox vaccination. In comparison to the other vaccination methods currently used, the MVA "Two-step"-vaccination is probably the safest. Its risk of a postvaccinal encephalitis is supposed to be lower according to animal experiments and theoretical considerations. This hypothesis has been confirmed meanwhile by the results of several thousand vaccinations in the already mentioned age-group.  相似文献

The separation of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) is usually performed by a time-of-flight (ToF) separation using pre-set ToF for both types of signal. In this work, we present a new, improved ex situ signal separation method for the separation of MIES and UPS for every single measurement. Signal separation issues due to changes of system parameters can be overcome by changing the ToF separation and therefore allowing for the application of a wider range of measuring conditions. The method also enables to identify and achieve separation of the two signals without any time consuming calibration and the use of any special material for the calibration. Furthermore, changes made to the discharge source are described that enable to operate an existing MIES/UPS source over a broader range of conditions. This allows for tuning of the yield of UV photons and metastable rare gas atoms leading to an improved signal to noise ratio. First results of this improved setup are well in agreement with spectra reported in literature and show increased resolution and higher signal intensities for both MIE and UP spectra compared to the previous, non-optimized setup.  相似文献

Pharmaceutical compounds such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics have been detected in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents, surface and ground water and even in drinking water all over the world, and therefore have developed as compounds of concern. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment has gained significant popularity as an advanced wastewater treatment technology and might be effective for an advanced removal of these pollutants. This paper evaluates the treatment of wastewater containing three NSAIDs (acetaminophen, ketoprofen and naproxen) and three antibiotics (roxithromycin, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) performed in two MBRs with sludge retention times (SRTs) of 15 (MBR-15) and 30 (MBR-30) days over a period of four weeks. It was observed that NSAIDs were removed with higher efficiencies than the antibiotics for both MBRs, and the MBR-30 presented higher removal efficiencies for all the compounds than obtained by MBR-15. Removal rates ranged from 55% (sulfamethoxazole) up to 100% (acetaminophen, ketoprofen). Besides mineralisation biological transformation products of ketoprofen and naproxen produced by wastewater biocoenosis were identified in both MBR permeates using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results indicated the importance of investigating the environmental fate of pharmaceuticals and their transformation products reaching the environment.  相似文献

Software is changed frequently during its life cycle. New requirements come, and bugs must be fixed. To update an application, it usually must be stopped, patched, and restarted. This causes time periods of unavailability, which is always a problem for highly available applications. Even for the development of complex applications, restarts to test new program parts can be time consuming and annoying. Thus, we aim at dynamic software updates to update programs at runtime. There is a large body of research on dynamic software updates, but so far, existing approaches have shortcomings either in terms of flexibility or performance. In addition, some of them depend on specific runtime environments and dictate the program's architecture. We present JavAdaptor , the first runtime update approach based on Java that (a) offers flexible dynamic software updates, (b) is platform independent, (c) introduces only minimal performance overhead, and (d) does not dictate the program architecture. JavAdaptor combines schema changing class replacements by class renaming and caller updates with Java HotSwap using containers and proxies. It runs on top of all major standard Java virtual machines.
