Most empirical investigations of the business cycles in the United States have excluded the dimension of asymmetric conditional volatility. This paper analyses the volatility dynamics of the US business cycle by comparing the performance of various multivariate generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models. In particular, we propose two bivariate GARCH models to examine the evidence of volatility asymmetry and time-varying correlations concurrently, and then apply the proposed models to five sectors of Industrial Production of the United States. Our findings provide strong evidence of asymmetric conditional volatility in all sectors, and some support of time-varying correlations in various sectoral pairs. This has important policy implications for government to consider the effective countercyclical measures during recessions. 相似文献

Health Outcomes and Socio-economic Status Among the Elderly in China: Evidence from the CHARLS Pilot

We are concerned in this paper with measuring health outcomes among the elderly in Zhejiang and Gansu provinces, China, and examining the relationships between different dimensions of health status and measures of socio-economic status (SES). We are CHARLS pilot data to document health conditions, using a very rich set of health indicators that include both self-reported measures and biomarkers. We also examine correlations between these health outcomes and two important indicators of socio-economic status (SES): education and log of per capita expenditure (log pce), our preferred measure of household resources. In general education tends to be positively correlated with better health outcomes, as it is in other countries. However, unmeasured community influences turn out to be highly important, much more so than one usually finds in other countries. While it is not yet clear which aspects of communities matter and why they matter, we set up an agenda for future research on this topic. We also find a large degree of under-diagnosis of hypertension, a major health problems that afflicts the aged. This implies that the current health system is not well prepared to address the rapid aging of the Chinese population, at least not in Gansu and Zhejiang. 相似文献

A physical model describing the I(V) characteristics of planar limiting current oxygen sensors based in an ion-conducting electrolyte is presented. The model focuses on the minimization of the electrochemical potential and the diffusion across a porous layer covering the measuring electrode. In a cloud computing paradigm, energy efficient allocation of different virtualized ICT resources (servers, storage disks, and networks, and the like) is a complex problem due to the presence of heterogeneous application (e.g., content delivery networks, MapReduce, web applications, and the like) workloads having contentious allocation requirements in terms of ICT resource capacities (e.g., network bandwidth, processing speed, response time, etc.). Several recent papers have tried to address the issue of improving energy efficiency in allocating cloud resources to applications with varying degree of success. However, to the best of our knowledge there is no published literature on this subject that clearly articulates the research problem and provides research taxonomy for succinct classification of existing techniques. Hence, the main aim of this paper is to identify open challenges associated with energy efficient resource allocation. In this regard, the study, first, outlines the problem and existing hardware and software-based techniques available for this purpose. Furthermore, available techniques already presented in the literature are summarized based on the energy-efficient research dimension taxonomy. Hybrid additive-subtractive manufacturing is gaining popularity by making full use of geometry complexity produced by additive manufacturing and dimensional accuracy derived from subtractive machining. Part design for this hybrid manufacturing approach has been done by trial-and-error, and no dedicated design methodology exists for this manufacturing approach. To address this issue, this work presents a topology optimization method for hybrid additive and subtractive manufacturing. To be specific, the boundary segments of the input design domain are categorized into two types: (i) Freeform boundary segments freely evolve through the casting SIMP method, and (ii) shape preserved boundary segments suppress the freeform evolvement and are composed of machining features through a feature fitting algorithm. Given the manufacturing strategy, the topology design is produced through additive manufacturing and the shape preserved boundary segments will be processed by post-machining. This novel topology optimization algorithm is developed under a unified SIMP and level set framework. The effectiveness of the algorithm is proved through a few numerical case studies. 相似文献

The effective visualization of vascular structures is critical for diagnosis, surgical planning as well as treatment evaluation. In recent work, we have developed an algorithm for vessel detection that examines the intensity profile around each voxel in an angiographic image and determines the likelihood that any given voxel belongs to a vessel; we term this the "vesselness coefficient" of the voxel. Our results show that our algorithm works particularly well for visualizing branch points in vessels. Compared to standard Hessian based techniques, which are fine-tuned to identify long cylindrical structures, our technique identifies branches and connections with other vessels. Using our computed vesselness coefficient, we explore a set of techniques for visualizing vasculature. Visualizing vessels is particularly challenging because not only is their position in space important for clinicians but it is also important to be able to resolve their spatial relationship. We applied visualization techniques that provide shape cues as well as depth cues to allow the viewer to differentiate between vessels that are closer from those that are farther. We use our computed vesselness coefficient to effectively visualize vasculature in both clinical neurovascular x-ray computed tomography based angiography images, as well as images from three different animal studies. We conducted a formal user evaluation of our visualization techniques with the help of radiologists, surgeons, and other expert users. A new approach for objectively analyzing the aggregation of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) through power spectrum analysis derived from fast Fourier transform (FFT) of images has been developed. Presently, detection of AChR aggregates at neuromuscular junctions is not easily accomplished. Though the formation of AChR clusters results in periodic gray-level variations that differ with time, no study reporting their correlation with frequency information in the Fourier domain for aggregates' detection purposes exists. To this end, we processed time-lapse images of AChR aggregates' formation on murine myotubes to extract peak values of power spectra. To validate interpretation of the Fourier spectra analysis, a computer routine was developed to semi-automatically count AChR aggregates. We found: (1) logarithmic maxima of Fourier spectra correlated significantly with experimentation time; (2) cluster count correlated significantly with time only after clusters were discernable from images, signifying that this method heavily depended on definitive growth data and thresholding values; (3) exponents of Fourier maxima versus time and cluster count versus time profiles during this phase compared favorably, indicating that both methods were analyzing identical cluster growth rates. Our observations suggest that analysis via FFT power spectrum is sensitive and robust enough to automatically quantify AChR aggregates. 相似文献

Multi-valued logics provide an interesting alternative to classical boolean logic for modeling and reasoning about systems. Such logics can be used for reasoning about partially-specified systems, effectively encode vacuity detection and query-checking problems, help in detecting inconsistencies, and many others.In our earlier work, we identified a useful family of multi-valued logics: those specified over finite distributive lattices where negation preserves involution, i.e., for every element a of the logic. Such structures are called quasi-boolean algebras, and model-checking over these not only extends the domain of applicability of automated reasoning to new problems, but can also speed up solutions to some classical verification problems.Symbolic model-checking over quasi-boolean algebras can be cast in terms of operations over multi-valued sets: sets whose membership functions are multi-valued. In this paper, we propose and empirically evaluate several choices for implementing multi-valued sets with decision diagrams. In particular, we describe two major approaches: (1) representing the multi-valued membership function canonically, using MDDs or ADDs; (2) representing multi-valued sets as a collection of classical sets, using a vector of either MBTDDs or BDDs. The naive implementation of (2) includes having a classical set for each value of the algebra. We exploit a result of lattice theory to reduce the number of such sets that need to be represented.The major contribution of this paper is the evaluation of the different implementations of multi-valued sets, done via a series of experiments and using several case studies.
