Small scale miners use mercury to extract gold from ore in many countries. An environmental and health assessment was performed in Indonesia in two regions, Galangan in Central Kalimantan and Talawaan in Northern Sulawesi. The environmental assessment showed severe mercury contamination of the sediments, and increased mercury levels in local fish. For the health investigation 281 volunteers were recruited and examined by a standardized questionnaire, a neurological examination and neuro-psychological tests. A medical score was used consisting of significant factors of mercury intoxication. Mercury exposed workers showed typical symptoms of mercury intoxication, such as movement disorders (ataxia, tremor, dysdiadochokinesia, etc.). Blood, urine and hair samples were taken from any participant and analyzed for mercury. The mercury concentration in the biomonitors was high, partly extreme high in the working population, increased in the population living in the same habitat and low in the control group. By a standard protocol which includes a combination of threshold values of mercury in the biomonitors and a medical sum score the diagnosis of chronic mercury intoxication was made for highly burdened workers (amalgam smelters) in 55% in Sulawesi and in 62% in Kalimantan. Less exposed mineral processors and the general population in the mining areas were also intoxicated to a high percentage.  相似文献

The chemical variation and depth profile of silicon carbide implanted with nitrogen and overgrown with epitaxial layer has been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of this study have been supplemented by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and electron energy loss-spectroscopy (EELS) in an attempt to correlate the chemical and structural information. Our results indicate that the nitrogen implantation into silicon carbide results in the formation of the Si–C–N layer. XPS revealed significant change in the bonding structure and chemical states in the implanted region. XPS results can be interpreted in terms of the silicon nitride and silicon carbonitride nanocrystals formation in the implanted region which is supported by the electron microscopy and spectroscopy results.  相似文献

The plasmonic properties of noble metals facilitate their use for in vivo bio‐applications such as targeted drug delivery and cancer cell therapy. Nanosilver is best suited for such applications as it has the lowest plasmonic losses among all such materials in the UV‐visible spectrum. Its toxicity, however, can destroy surrounding healthy tissues and thus, hinders its safe use. Here, that toxicity against a model biological system (Escherichia coli) is “cured” or blocked by coating nanosilver hermetically with a about 2 nm thin SiO2 layer in one‐step by a scalable flame aerosol method followed by swirl injection of a silica precursor vapor (hexamethyldisiloxane) without reducing the plasmonic performance of the enclosed or encapsulated silver nanoparticles (20–40 nm in diameter as determined by X‐ray diffraction and microscopy). This creates the opportunity to safely use powerful nanosilver for intracellular bio‐applications. The label‐free biosensing and surface bio‐functionalization of these ready‐to‐use, non‐toxic (benign) Ag nanoparticles is presented by measuring the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in a model sensing experiment. Furthermore, the silica coating around nanosilver prevents its agglomeration or flocculation (as determined by thermal annealing, optical absorption spectroscopy and microscopy) and thus, enhances its biosensitivity, including bioimaging as determined by dark field illumination.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the problem of reducing the intercarrier-interference (ICI) power in the transmission over Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Systems (OFDM) using pulse shaping methods. A new pulse was proposed here and it was investigated in terms of ICI interference. It appears to be suitable for transmission in OFDM systems with carrier frequency offset. The results obtained by calculations show that the performance improvements are significant for reducing average intercarrier-interference (ICI) power and increasing the ratio of average signal power to average ICI power (SIR).  相似文献

The current study evaluated the associations between externalizing psychopathology and marital adjustment in a combined sample of 1,805 married couples. We further considered the role of personality in these associations, as personality has been found to predict both the development of externalizing psychopathology as well as marital distress and instability. Diagnostic interviews assessed conduct disorder, adult symptoms of antisocial personality disorder, and alcohol dependence. Personality was assessed using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire. The Dyadic Adjustment Scale was used to measure marital adjustment. Results indicate that more externalizing psychopathology, greater negative emotionality, and lower communal positive emotionality were associated with reduced marital adjustment in both individuals and their spouses. Low constraint was associated with reduced marital adjustment for individuals but not for their spouses. Multivariate analyses indicated externalizing psychopathology continued to predict marital adjustment even when accounting for overlap with personality. These results highlight the importance of examining the presence of externalizing psychopathology and the personality attributes of both members of a dyad when considering psychological predictors of marital adjustment. The European Union (EU) from the beginning of 2007 has focused its emphasis on the development of a new policy that puts energy back at the heart of EU action. Indeed, it has very often been stated that the difficulty and complexity of achieving green energy targets in the EU will require strengthened measures to promote implementation of new energy technologies (NET), as well as measures to support the related energy Research and Technology Development (R&TD). Often forgotten is the fact, that most of all, a European-wide co-ordinated forum is needed to continuously develop and sophisticate the monitoring and methodology results, bringing together specialised statisticians, energy researchers and experts on energy socio-economics. Today a nebulous picture prevails on the existence of categorized data with regards to energy Research and Technology Development (R&TD) expenditure. Barium hollandites, a family of framework titanates that can potentially be used for the immobilization of short‐lived fission products (especially 137Cs) in radioactive wastes, have been investigated by high‐temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry using 2PbO·B2O3 solvent at 702°C. The enthalpies of formation from constituent oxides show increasing energetic stability of the hollandite phase as Ti4+ is substituted by Mg2+, Al3+, and Fe3+, in that order. In general, the thermodynamic stability increases with decreasing average cation radius in the β sites, and when the tolerance factor approaches one. The Al‐ and Fe‐hollandites are more stable than phase assemblages containing BaTiO3 perovskite and Al/Fe/Ti oxides, whereas Mg‐hollandite is less stable than the corresponding assemblage of BaTiO3 perovskite, MgTiO3 ilmenite, and TiO2. This instability makes Mg‐hollandite a less suitable host for fission products. Hollandite phase formation during metal citrate combustion synthesis depends more on thermodynamic stability and phase chemistry than on the annealing temperature.  相似文献

Research has supported the existence of distinct behavioral patterns, demographic correlates, and etiologic mechanisms for aggressive (AGG) versus nonaggressive but delinquent (DEL) antisocial behavior. Though behavioral genetic studies have the potential to further crystallize these dimensions, inconsistent results have limited their contribution. These inconsistencies may stem in part from the limited attention paid to the impact of age. In the current study, the authors thus examined age-related etiological moderation of AGG and DEL antisocial behavior in a sample of 720 sibling pairs (ranging in age from 10 to 18 years) with varying degrees of genetic relatedness. Results reveal that the magnitude of genetic and environmental influences on AGG remained stable across adolescence. By contrast, genetic influences on DEL increased dramatically with age, whereas shared environmental influences decreased. Subsequent longitudinal analyses fully replicated these results. Such findings highlight etiological distinctions between aggression and delinquency, and offer insights into the expression of genetic influences during development. In the present research it is reported the synthesis and characterization of CdS nanoparticles (NPs) prepared using carboxylic-functionalized poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the ligand via aqueous route at room temperature and ambient pressure. Different molar concentrations of carboxylic-PVA and PVA were investigated aiming at producing stable colloidal systems. Carboxylic-PVA was conjugated with BSA (bovine serum albumin) and used as capping ligand in the preparation of CdS nanocrystals. UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the kinetics and the relative stability of polymer-capped CdS nanocrystals. The results have clearly indicated that the carboxylic-functionalized PVA was much more effective on nucleating and stabilizing colloidal CdS nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions compared to PVA. In addition, the CdS nanocrystals were obtained in the so-called “quantum-size confinement regime”, with the calculated average size below 4.0 nm and fluorescent activity. Thus, a novel simple route was successfully developed for synthesizing nanohybrids based on quantum dots and water-soluble chemically functionalized polymers with incorporated carboxylic moiety with the possibility of direct bioconjugation.  相似文献

A theory is presented that includes capillary, hydrodynamic, and diffusion aspects. The main attention is devoted to capillary and hydrodynamic effects. The hydrodynamic process (bubble growth) is governed by a nonlinear integrodifferential equation, whose coefficients are dependent on the surface tension, density, and viscosity of the liquid, and also on the difference between the pressure in the gas within the bubble and that in the surrounding liquid. The gas pressure in the bubble is dependent on the rate of gas release from the inclusion (source). An expression is derived for the bubble radius as a function of time. The theory can be useful for developing the technology of powder materials and foam metals.  相似文献
