Emotional labor theory has conceptualized emotional display rules as shared norms governing the expression of emotions at work. Using a sample of registered nurses working in different units of a hospital system, we provided the first empirical evidence that display rules can be represented as shared, unit-level beliefs. Additionally, controlling for the influence of dispositional affectivity, individual-level display rule perceptions, and emotion regulation, we found that unit-level display rules are associated with individual-level job satisfaction. We also showed that unit-level display rules relate to burnout indirectly through individual-level display rule perceptions and emotion regulation strategies. Finally, unit-level display rules also interacted with individual-level dispositional affectivity to predict employee use of emotion regulation strategies. We discuss how future research on emotional labor and display rules, particularly in the health care setting, can build on these findings. Moisture-damaged buildings are associated with respiratory symptoms and underlying diseases among building occupants, but the causative agent(s) remain a mystery. We first identified specific fungal and bacterial taxa in classrooms with moisture damage in Finnish and Dutch primary schools. We then investigated associations of the identified moisture damage indicators with respiratory symptoms in more than 2700 students. Finally, we explored whether exposure to specific taxa within the indoor microbiota may explain the association between moisture damage and respiratory health. Schools were assessed for moisture damage through detailed inspections, and the microbial composition of settled dust in electrostatic dustfall collectors was determined using marker-gene analysis. In Finland, there were several positive associations between particular microbial indicators (diversity, richness, individual taxa) and a respiratory symptom score, while in the Netherlands, the associations tended to be mostly inverse and statistically non-significant. In Finland, abundance of the Sphingomonas bacterial genus and endotoxin levels partially explained the associations between moisture damage and symptom score. A few microbial taxa explained part of the associations with health, but overall, the observed associations between damage-associated individual taxa and respiratory health were limited. 相似文献

CpdB is a 3′-nucleotidase/2′3′-cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, active also with reasonable efficiency on cyclic dinucleotides like c-di-AMP (3′,5′-cyclic diadenosine monophosphate) and c-di-GMP (3′,5′-cyclic diadenosine monophosphate). These are regulators of bacterial physiology, but are also pathogen-associated molecular patterns recognized by STING to induce IFN-β response in infected hosts. The cpdB gene of Gram-negative and its homologs of gram-positive bacteria are virulence factors. Their protein products are extracytoplasmic enzymes (either periplasmic or cell–wall anchored) and can hydrolyze extracellular cyclic dinucleotides, thus reducing the innate immune responses of infected hosts. This makes CpdB(-like) enzymes potential targets for novel therapeutic strategies in infectious diseases, bringing about the necessity to gain insight into the molecular bases of their catalytic behavior. We have dissected the two-domain structure of Escherichia coli CpdB to study the role of its N-terminal and C-terminal domains (CpdB_Ndom and CpdB_Cdom). The specificity, kinetics and inhibitor sensitivity of point mutants of CpdB, and truncated proteins CpdB_Ndom and CpdB_Cdom were investigated. CpdB_Ndom contains the catalytic site, is inhibited by phosphate but not by adenosine, while CpdB_Cdom is inactive but contains a substrate-binding site that determines substrate specificity and adenosine inhibition of CpdB. Among CpdB substrates, 3′-AMP, cyclic dinucleotides and linear dinucleotides are strongly dependent on the CpdB_Cdom binding site for activity, as the isolated CpdB_Ndom showed much-diminished activity on them. In contrast, 2′,3′-cyclic mononucleotides and bis-4-nitrophenylphosphate were actively hydrolyzed by CpdB_Ndom, indicating that they are rather independent of the CpdB_Cdom binding site. 相似文献

Carbon-alumina coatings on stainless steel were prepared by a sol-gel route. The dispersion of the commercial graphite flakes by an ultrasonic bath, an ultrasonic probe and a high-shear mixer, produce thinner flakes, few-layered-graphene and bi-layer-graphene (BLG), respectively. The coatings were examined by optical and electron microscopy, interferential rugosimetry, optical profilometry and Raman spectroscopy. The friction coefficient against a steel ball is decreased by a factor of 5–7 and the wear volume is reduced by a factor of 6–38 compared to a pure alumina coating. The best results correspond to the sample prepared using the high-shear mixer. Delamination of the graphite flakes into BLG during the friction test provides the system with debris suitable for tribofilm building up and lubrication but it is better to already have carbon dispersed as BLG in the coating before the test, notably because the carbon surface area available is much higher. 相似文献

The perovskite (1−x)YMnO3−xBiFeO3 binary system is very promising because of its multiferroic end members. Nanocrystalline phases have been recently obtained by mechanosynthesis across the system, and the perovskite structural evolution has been described. Two continuous solid solutions with orthorhombic Pnma and rhombohedral R3c symmetries were found, which coexist within a broad compositional interval of 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.9. This might be a polar-nonpolar morphotropic phase boundary region, at which strong phase-change magnetoelectric responses can be expected. A major issue is phase decomposition at moderate temperatures that highly complicates ceramic processing. This is required for carrying out a sound electrical characterization and also for their use in devices. We present here the application of Spark Plasma Sintering to the ceramic processing of YMnO3-BiFeO3 phases. This advanced technique, when combined with nanocrystalline powders, allowed densifying phases at reduced processing temperatures and times, so that perovskite decomposition was avoided. Electrical measurements were accomplished, and the response was shown to be mostly dominated by conduction. Nonetheless, the intrinsic dielectric permittivity was obtained, and a distinctive enhancement in the phase coexistence region was revealed. Besides, Rayleigh-type behavior characteristic of ferroelectrics was also demonstrated for all rhombohedral phases. The Self-Awareness and Management Strategies (SAMS) Scales were created to assess therapists' experiences of hindering self-awareness during counseling sessions. A sample of 301 therapists completed the SAMS, along with 2 other measures used to establish validity. In addition to asking about therapists' experiences with their self-awareness, the SAMS also assessed the strategies therapists use to manage hindering self-awareness. The results suggest that there is strong initial evidence for the reliability and validity of the SAMS Scales. A factor analysis of the SAMS Scales resulted in 2 subscales for hindering self-awareness (Anxious and Distracting) and 5 subscales of management strategies (Self-Care, Relaxation, Focusing on the Client, Suppression, and Use of Basic Techniques). Chronic stress by immobilization during gestation can alter several mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in adrenal gland. The aim of this work was to quantify the apoptotic index of adrenal cortex during mid-pregnancy and to prove cytological characteristics by electron microscopy. The apoptotic index did not present significant differences between the adrenal cortex areas of control and experimental rats in any of the three ages studied. The day of gestation influenced significantly on the apoptotic index in both groups. This index increased as gestation progressed. It may be concluded that chronic stress by immobilization might induce the increase of apoptotic index in adrenal cortex as gestation progresses which might be related variations of plasmatic corticosterone and prolactin, and to the decrease of specific growth factors. On the other hand, it might be concluded that each zone of adrenal cortex behaves independently in regards to apoptosis and cellular proliferation via paracrine and/or autocrine regulatory mechanisms without being affected by other zones. 相似文献

In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, there is a general amino acid permease, regulated by nitrogen catabolite repression, and several specific permeases whose nitrogen regulation is not well understood. In this study, we used continuous cultures to analyse the effect of nitrogen limitation and pH on the activity of general and several specific amino acid permeases. General permease activity was maximal in severe nitrogen limitation and diminished 400-fold in cells grown under nitrogen excess. For the specific permeases, the maximal uptake activity was found between mild limitation and nitrogen excess, while very small activity was detected under strict limitation. These results indicate that the nitrogen regulation of the general and the specific amino acid carriers is coordinated in such a way that no redundancy exists in amino acid transport. The regulation of the specific permeases was similar to that found for a system with anabolic function in nitrogen metabolism. All of these permeases are supposed to work through a proton symport mechanism, and thus rely on pH gradients to carry out their function. We studied the effect of pH on the kinetic constants of the general permease. Our results show that the effect of pH on the Km was different for acidic, neutral and basic amino acids, while the effect on Vmax was independent of the electrical charge of the amino acids. 相似文献

This paper examines the tributary monitoring network currently in place for sampling the amount of phosphorus entering the U.S. Great Lakes, focusing on the challenges faced by the agencies and organizations responsible for maintaining the network. The tributaries that are monitored vary in terms of flow, the size and terrain of the watershed being drained, and patterns of land use. Data generated by this network are used by researchers to compute lake-wide phosphorus loads. In this work, the primary drivers and challenges associated with operating an effective phosphorus tributary monitoring program were investigated through interviews with stakeholders responsible for managing a portion of the existing network. Based on these interviews, the authors identify three recommendations that policy makers interested in maintaining an effective phosphorus monitoring network in the Great Lakes should consider. The first is to provide states with incentives to support the long-term monitoring that is required to estimate phosphorus loads in tributaries to the Great Lakes; currently, most states design their programs to meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act, which results in patterns of sampling that are not necessarily useful for computing loads. The second recommendation is to facilitate the creation of a monitoring protocol that generates enough samples to identify trends and quantify loads at a level of certainty necessary for use in statistical models and load control programs. Finally, funding mechanisms capable of supporting long-term monitoring programs need to be established, with programs in Michigan and Minnesota serving as potential models. 相似文献
