A comparative photocatalytic analysis was carried out on TiO2 made in a Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) process and flame-made Degussa P25. Both have similar crystallinity, phase composition, phase segregation and a non-porous surface. Hence comparison was made based on their difference in specific surface area, organic adsorption and the amount of OH• generated upon illumination. The photocatalytic activity tests were carried out using the following series of organic compounds: sucrose, glucose, fructose, maleic acid, glyoxylic acid, oxalic acid, isobutyric acid, phenol and methanol. FSP-made TiO2 outperformed P25 for saccharides mineralisation, while for phenol and methanol mineralisation P25 was better than FSP-made TiO2. Similar mineralisation rates were observed for both FSP-made and P25 TiO2 for the mineralisation of carboxylic acids. This shows that the relative performance of the photocatalysts depends on the type of organic compounds to be degraded. The high surface area and possibly a more efficient interfacial charge transfer of FSP-made TiO2 provided an efficient pathway for saccharides mineralisation. As for phenol and methanol, the mineralisation rates were higher when using P25 due to the greater amount of OH• radicals generated by this photocatalyst. The fast mineralisation rates of carboxylic acids made degradation of these organic compounds to be less affected by the TiO2 photocatalyst properties and conditions tested in this work.  相似文献

The effects of platinum (Pt) and silver (Ag) metallisation in the photocatalytic oxidation of resorcinol at pH 3 ± 0.5 have been investigated. The photocatalytic degradation of resorcinol was significantly improved by Pt/TiO2, while the presence of Ag/TiO2 enhanced the initial photocatalytic degradation rate of resorcinol slightly. Likewise, the photocatalytic mineralisation of resorcinol continued to be enhanced by Pt/TiO2, but it was retarded when Ag/TiO2 was used.

The function of Pt and Ag deposits on the surface of TiO2 has been found to be markedly influenced by the interaction of resorcinol and its degradation products with the metal deposits. The presence of Pt or Ag on the surface of TiO2 altered the distribution of degradation products of resorcinol as well as the production of photoactive species for the photocatalytic oxidation of resorcinol. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses have indicated that the contrasting effect of Pt and Ag deposits were governed by the oxidation states and the catalytic property of metal deposits. In addition to that, it has been found that the roles of metal deposits are specific and should not be generalised.  相似文献

Aeration process consumes more than 60% of the total energy required for wastewater treatment. The present study aims to save power consumption within wastewater treatment aeration process through recycling of the air flow. A new technique of aeration is used to increase oxygen transfer efficiency via exploiting recycled pressurized air. A pilot plant has been constructed to study the effect of using recycled pressurized air within sequencing batch reactor (SBR) model. The results showed that the new technique comparing with the conventional SBR model improved Standard oxygen transfer rate (SORT), Standard oxygen transfer efficiency (SOTE) and Standard aeration efficiency (SAE). In particular, the new technique enhanced (SAE) with 10 and 4% at gauge pressure values 0.5 atm. and 2 atm. respectively. On the other hand, intermittent aeration enhanced (SAE) with 15 and 5% at gauge pressure values 0.5 atm. and 2 atm. respectively.  相似文献

Synthetic dyes are more available than natural dyes were in the past, because of lower prices and wider ranges of bright shades with considerably improved color fastness properties. In current years, concern for the environment has created an increasing demand for natural dyes, which are friendlier to the environment than are synthetic dyes. The aim of this work is to study the effect of dyeing cotton fabrics with both a natural dye (henna) and a synthetic dye (Remazol blue) on some mechanical properties and those of stability to light exposure. The undyed and dyed cotton fabrics were tested for their mechanical behaviors expressed as tenacity (N), elongation %, and work-breaking (N · m). They were also tested for shrinkage and crease recovery angle. The stability to light before and after 100 h exposure was examined by investigating the microstructure [using x-ray diffraction (XRD)] and macrostructure [using a scanning electron microscope (SEM)] and the reflection spectra. The results proved that the cotton samples dyed with Henna dye have higher mechanical properties than those dyed with “Remazol” reactive dye. Moreover, the light fading behaviors of both synthetic and natural dyes were studied in terms of the reflection spectra (400–800 nm), microstructure, and macrostructure of the sample's fibers.  相似文献

An adamantane‐based atom transfer radical initiator (Adm‐Br) was prepared by the treatment of 1‐[[N‐[2‐Hydroxy‐l,l‐bis(hydroxymethyl)ethyl]amino]carbonyl]adamantane with bromopropionyl bromide. The resulting initiator was subsequently used in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to form (Adm‐p‐MMA), which was successfully used, as a macroinitiator, in further ATRP reactions with 3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2 5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐α‐d ‐glucofuranose (gly), a glycomonomer, to afford the Adm‐p‐MMA‐b‐gly polymer. The new Adm‐p‐MMA‐b‐gly polymer subsequently was employed to form a nanocomposite with chitosan‐modified, Nanofil clay (NC). The resulting Adm‐p‐MMA‐b‐gly/NC composite material was progressively hydrolyzed to regenerate the OH groups of the glucose units within the Adm‐p‐MMA‐b‐gly copolymer. The polymer/NC nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. POLYM. ENG. Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, as intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis, play a central role in dissemination of the disease. Control of these snails by chemical molluscicides adversely affects the aquatic environment, causing toxic and carcinogenic effects on non-target organisms. Searching for promising substances from biological origin becomes an urgent need to overcome these drawbacks. Screening tests were carried out on 236 fungal genera isolated from the habitat of freshwater snails in four Egyptian governorates. Twenty species were effective against B. alexandrina snails, but the most potent was Penicillium janthinellum as the value of LC50 was 1.03%. Chemical analyses of this filtrate resulted in the separation of a compound effective against snails; it was identified as methyl gallate. Protein electrophoresis showed that both fungal filtrate and methyl gallate affect the protein pattern of snails’ haemolymph. Little or no mortality of Daphnia pulex individuals was observed after their exposure to sub lethal concentrations of each treatment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the occurrence and concentration of Giardia cysts in wastewater and river water samples in Al-Jinderiyah region, Latakia, Syria. A total of 120 samples were collected between October 2016 and October 2017 from influent and effluent of Al-Jinderiyah Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and from three contaminated river water sites. Samples were concentrated and subjected to microscopic examination. The results show that the concentrations of cysts ranged from 0 to 297 cysts/L in wastewater samples. The overall removal efficiency of cysts in the activated sludge WWTP was 84.35%. The concentrations of cysts ranged from 0 to 128.52 cysts/L in river water samples. The highest concentration in river water was recorded near the raw wastewater discharge point. Seasonal variations of Giardia cysts concentration were significant, and the highest concentrations were recorded in the rainy season. The results suggest that Giardia may pose a public health risk in the studied region.  相似文献

In this study, the formulation of a novel polyaluminum chloride-chitosan composite coagulant that improves the coagulation process for natural organic matter (NOM) removal was investigated. The performance of the composite coagulant was tested using two water sources (synthetic and natural water) to develop a better understanding on the behaviour of the composite coagulant. Fourier Transform-Infra red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ferron analysis and zeta potential studies were performed to characterise the composite coagulant. FT-IR analysis showed that there is an intermolecular interaction between Al species and chitosan molecules, while ferron analysis indicated that the distributions of Ala, Alb, and Alc in PACl-chitosan are different from those in PACl. At a low Al dosage (2.16 mg L−1), a much higher removal of NOM from synthetic water, as evidenced from UV254 and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) measurements, was achieved by the composite coagulants in comparison to that removed by PACl or PACl and chitosan added separately. For natural water from the Myponga Reservoir, both polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and PACl-chitosan composite coagulants demonstrated similar dissolved organic carbon (DOC) percentage removal, whereas PACl-chitosan gave a slight improvement in removing the UV254 absorbing components of NOM.  相似文献
