Using solvent casting and melt compounding methods, we realized antibacterial and antifungal poly(lactic acid)‐based films by introducing different percentages of antimicrobial azo dyes into polymer matrices. Concentration up to 0.01% (w/w) of azo compounds permitted the preparation of antimicrobial and transparent films. The thin films retained the properties of the pure PLA matrices, such as glass transition temperature, flexibility, and amorphous nature. The films exhibited antimicrobial activity and the capability to inhibit biofilms formation of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Spectrophotometric investigation of azo compounds release from the polymer matrices confirmed that the materials might have applications in fields where an intrinsic antimicrobial ability of the material is required, such as biomedical tools, biodegradable antibacterial coatings, and films for active packaging. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nisin, in the form of the commercial product Nisaplin, and lacticin 3147 in whey powdered form were added to minced pork-meat in amounts of 0.15% (w/w) and 1.5% (w/w), respectively. The meat was cooked and inoculated with a Staphylococcus aureus strain of meat origin and a Listeria innocua strain at a level of 107 or 105 CFU g–1. The batches were stored vacuum-packaged for 21 days at 8 °C. Nisin and lacticin 3147 immediately reduced the L. innocua population at the time of inoculation. Nisin showed higher inhibitory activity than lacticin 3147. During the storage period, a slight L. innocua growth was observed in the batches inoculated with the larger inoculum, and a bacteriostatic effect was observed against Listeria in the batches inoculated with 105 CFU g–1. Nisin maintained a constant S. aureus population in the cooked batch inoculated with 107 CFU g–1, although the bacteriocin was capable of reducing the amount of S. aureus by 90% in the batch inoculated with 105 CFU g–1. On the other hand, lacticin 3147 did not show an inhibitory effect against S. aureus in the cooked meat. The starter culture Lactococcus lactis DPC 303-T4 (containing the conjugative plasmid encoding production of lacticin 3147) was inoculated in a portion of a Longissimus dorsi pork muscle with brine. L. lactis DPC 303-T4 performed a good fermentation, but lacticin 3147 production was not found after 7 days at 12 °C of storage. 相似文献

In this work, the effect of active coating on the shelf life of low-moisture Mozzarella cheese packaged in air and modified atmosphere (MAP) was studied. The active coating was based on sodium alginate (2%, wt/vol) and potassium sorbate (1%, wt/vol). The MAP was made up of 75% CO2 and 25% N2 (MAP1), 25% CO2 and 75% N2 (MAP2), or 50% CO2 and 50% N2 (MAP3). The product quality decay was assessed by monitoring microbiological and sensory changes during storage at 4, 8, and 14°C. Results showed that the combination of active coating and MAP was able to improve the preservation of low-moisture Mozzarella cheese. Specifically, the shelf life increased up to 160 d for samples stored at 4°C, and 40 and 11 d for those at 8 and 14°C, respectively. A faster quality decay for untreated samples packaged in air was observed. In particular, the Pseudomonas spp. growth and the appearance of molds were responsible for product unacceptability. The combination of active coating and MAP represents a strategic solution to prolong the shelf life of low-moisture Mozzarella cheese and to ensure the safety of the product under thermal abuse conditions. 相似文献

The production of biodegradable and edible films with desired mechanical characteristics and gas barrier properties represents one of the most advanced challenges in the field of food wrapping and coating. New edible films can serve not only to provide food with physical protection but also to reduce loss of their moisture, to restrict absorption of oxygen, to lessen migration of lipids, to improve their mechanical handling features, and as materials, to apply in direct contact with internal food to realize a multilayer food packaging. Polymers derived from natural products, like carbohydrates and proteins, offer the greatest opportunities as component of edible films since their biodegradability and environmental compatibility are assured and they can also supplement the nutritional value of specific foods. However, excessive water solubility and poor water vapor barrier properties, and often poor mechanical resistance, have their application limited until the present time. Numerous studies have been carried out to improve their properties by preparing composite and multi-component films or by physically and chemically crosslinking their natural components. In the present review we summarize the main results obtained by crosslinking with the enzyme transglutaminase different proteins contained in multi-component pectin- and chitosan-based edible films, having the aim to create environmentally-friendly "bioplastics" with mechanical and permeability properties similar to the ones exhibited by plastics of petrochemical origin. 相似文献

Multiple myeloma results from the clonal proliferation of abnormal plasma cells (PCs) in the bone marrow (BM). In this study, the cell surface expression markers (CD) on atypical PCs (detected by multiparametric flow cytometry (MFC)) were correlated with copy number alterations (CNAs) in the genome (detected by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA)) to assess their impact on prognosis in newly diagnosed MM patients. Statistically significant results were obtained when different stages of PC maturation (classified based on CD19 and CD81 expression) were associated with CD117 expression and identified CNAs. In the intermediately differentiated PC group (CD19(−) CD81(+)), patients who didn’t express CD117 had a lower median progression free survival (PFS) (p = 0.024). Moreover, within this group, patients with less than three adverse CNAs, which harbor CD117, had a better outcome with a PFS of more than 48 months compared with 19 months (p = 0.008). Considering all the results, our study suggested the need to integrate both the CD markers and copy number alterations to evaluate the prognosis of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients. 相似文献

We provide a space–time adaptation procedure for the approximation of the Shallow Water Equations (SWE). This approach relies on a recovery based estimator for the global discretization error, where the space and time contributions are kept separate. In particular we propose an ad hoc procedure for the recovery of the time derivative of the numerical solution and then we employ this reconstruction to define the error estimator in time. Concerning the space adaptation, we move from an anisotropic error estimator able to automatically identify the density, the shape and the orientation of the elements of the computational mesh. The proposed global error estimator turns out to share the good properties of each recovery based error estimator. The whole adaptive procedure is then combined with a suitable stabilized finite element SW solver. Finally the reliability of the coupled solution–adaptation procedure is successfully assessed on two unsteady test cases of interest for hydraulics applications. 相似文献

Various different agri-food biomasses might be turned into renewable sources for producing biodegradable and edible plastics, potentially attractive for food, agricultural and cosmeceutical sectors. In this regard, different seeds utilized for edible and non-edible oil extraction give rise to high amounts of organic by-products, known as seed oil cakes (SOCs), potentially able to become protein-rich resources useful for the manufacturing of biodegradable films. This study reports the potential of SOC derived from Argania spinosa (argan), a well-known plant containing valuable non-refined oil suitable for food or cosmetic use, to be a promising valuable source for production of a protein-based matrix of biomaterials to be used in the pharmaco-cosmetic sector. Thus, glycerol-plasticized films were prepared by casting and drying using different amounts of argan seed protein concentrate, in the presence of increasing glycerol concentrations, and characterized for their morphological, mechanical, barrier, and hydrophilicity properties. In addition, their antioxidant activity and effects on cell viability and wound healing were investigated. The hydrophobic nature of the argan protein-based films, and their satisfying physicochemical and biological properties, suggest a biorefinery approach for the recycling of argan SOC as valuable raw material for manufacturing new products to be used in the cosmeceutical and food industries. 相似文献

Few studies have considered immune-mediated inflammatory disorders (IMID) together, which is necessary to adequately understand them given they share common mechanisms. Our goal was to investigate the expression of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and its receptors VPAC1 and VPAC2 in selected IMID, analyze the effect of biological therapies on them, and identify miRNA signatures associated with their expression. Serum VIP levels and mRNA of VPAC and miRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells were analyzed from 52 patients with psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, Graves’ disease, or spondyloarthritis and from 38 healthy subjects. IMID patients showed higher levels of VIP and increased expression of VPAC2 compared to controls (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0192, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the levels of VIP or VPAC2 expression were adequate discriminators capable of identifying IMID. Treatment of IMID patients with anti-TNFα and anti-IL12/23 significantly affected serum VIP levels. We identified miRNA signatures associated with levels of serum VIP and VPAC2 expression, which correlated with IMID diagnosis of the patients. The results indicate that the expression of VIP/VPAC2 is able of identify IMIDs and open up a line of research based on the association between the VIP/VPAC axis and miRNA signatures in immune-mediated diseases. 相似文献
