Eosinophils and serum eosinophilic cationic proteins in interleukin-2-based immunotherapy for cancer

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) occurs in many disorders, including thalassemias and other hemoglobinopathies, and commonly presents in the spleen and liver. We present a case of spinal cord compression in a patient with beta-thalassemia intermedia, and review the literature and available treatment options. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 35-year-old black female with beta-thalassemia intermedia presented with a 3-week history of back pain and lower extremity weakness. Neurologic examination was consistent with spinal cord compression, and gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed this diagnosis. She was given intravenous steroids and radiotherapy was begun in 200 cGy fractions to a total dose of 2000 cGy. RESULTS: At the completion of radiotherapy the patient was ambulatory with mild residual weakness. MRI scans 16 months later showed smaller, but persistent masses, and she remains asymptomatic 5 years from her diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Recognition of spinal cord EMH requires prompt physical examination and MRI for accurate diagnosis. EMH can be managed with radiation, surgery, transfusions, or a combination of these therapies. Radiation in conservative doses of (750-3500 cGy) is non-invasive, avoids the surgical risks of potentially severe hemorrhage and incomplete resection, and has a high complete remission rate in the majority of patients. Relapse rates are moderate (37.5%), but retreatment provides excellent chance for second remission.     

Genetic variants of human serum albumin in Italy: point mutants and a carboxyl-terminal variant

Of the > 50 different genetic variants of human serum albumin (alloalbumins) that have been characterized by amino acid or DNA sequence analysis, almost half have been identified in Italy through a long-term electrophoretic survey of serum. Previously we have reported structural studies of 11 Italian alloalbumins with point mutations, 2 different carboxyl-terminal variants, and 1 case of analbuminemia in an Italian family. This article describes confirmation by DNA sequencing of mutations previously inferred from protein sequencing of 4 of the above alloalbumins; it also reports the mutations identified by protein and DNA sequence analysis of 4 other Italian alloalbumins not previously recorded: albumin Larino, His3-->Tyr; Tradate-2 (protein sequencing only), Lys225-->Gln; Caserta, Lys276-->Asn; and Bazzano, a carboxyl-terminal variant. The first 3 have point mutations that produce a single amino acid substitution, but a nucleotide deletion causes a frameshift and an altered and truncated carboxyl-terminal sequence in albumin Bazzano. In these 4 instances the expression of the alloalbumin is variable, ranging from 10% to 70% of the total albumiN, in contrast to the usual 50% each for the normal and mutant albumin. The distribution of point mutations in the albumin gene is nonrandom; most of the 47 reported point substitutions involve charged amino acid residues on the surface of the molecule that are not concerned with ligand-binding sites.     

Performance analysis of MSP: feature-rich high-speed transportprotocol

A performance analysis of the MultiStream Protocol (MSP), a feature-rich flexible transport protocol designed to meet the needs of high-performance applications, is presented. The analysis presents the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of several different protocol mechanisms, such as packet or block mode data transfer. It is based on the processing complexity associated with executing each protocol function. Results show that a feature-rich transport protocol can be implemented in which the protocol control processing overhead is not prohibitive to providing high performance to an application. Instead, the benefits of a lean protocol are achieved because the protocol services better fit application requirements. Also, the primary bottleneck for data transfer is shown to be the complexity associated with error control, which can reduced through the technique of transmitting packets in blocks     

Natural compounds to preserve fresh fish burgers

Natural antimicrobial compounds to control the quality decay of a fresh fish burger were studied. In particular, thymol, lemon extract and grape fruit seed extract (GFSE), at 20, 40 and 80 ppm, have been tested against the main spoilage microorganisms inoculated in fish burgers stored at 5 °C. The evolution of mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria was also monitored. The sensorial quality decay was determined by means of a panel test, which assessed odour, colour, texture, drip loss and general appearance during the storage period. Results show that all the active substances efficiently slowed down the growth of the spoilage microorganisms. In particular, GFSE was the most efficient against Photobacterium phosphoreum , Shewanella putrefaciens and mesophilic bacteria, whereas thymol was the most efficient against both psychrotrophic bacteria and Pseudomonas fluorescens . Microbial growth was the factor limiting fresh fish burger acceptability.     

Distributed call processing for personal communications services

The authors present a control architecture, procedures, and a signaling system to support advanced personal communication services (PCS). They describe the current cellular system architecture, and its algorithms and data management schemes for providing services. They present review how current cellular systems operate with a focus on mobility management and call and connection control. The benefits of this architecture include lower signaling traffic over wireless links, lower network load for signaling traffic, low call/connection delivery times, ubiquitous service offering, and more efficient routing of connections     

Beam dumps design and local radiation protection at TERA synchrotron

The realisation of the National Center of Hadrontherapy was funded by the Italian Government in 2002. The Centre will be built in the area of Pavia (Italy). The synchrotron designed in the framework of this programme will accelerate protons and carbon ions up to 250 MeV and 400 MeV u(-1), respectively. Some of the main aspects which were taken into account in the design of the acceleration system are the patient's safety and the beam control. From this point of view an important role is played by the beam dumps in the synchrotron ring and upstream of the extraction system. In particular, an horizontal and a vertical beam dump will be installed in the synchrotron ring: the former will be used for lowering the beam intensity and the latter for beam abortion. The dump at the extraction will absorb the particles during the mounting and the falling ramps of the synchrotron magnetic cycle, thus extracting only the flat top of the ion spill. Beam dumps can produce intense fields of secondary radiation (neutrons, charged light-hadrons and photons) and high rates of induced activity, since they can absorb the beam completely. Usually they have to be shielded to protect the electronics during machine operation and to attenuate the radiation dose below the limits imposed by the law when the personnel access to the synchrotron hall. The part of the shielding design of the beam dumps concerning with the acceleration of protons was made using Monte Carlo simulations with the FLUKA code. Both induced activity and secondary radiation were taken into account. The shields against secondary radiation produced by carbon ions were designed, referring only to secondary neutrons, taking double-differential distributions from the literature as sources for the FLUKA simulations. The induced activity from carbon ions interactions was estimated analytically, using the data generated by the EPAX 2 code. The dose-equivalent rates from the induced radionuclides were calculated at 1 m from the shielded dumps, taking into account the contribution of activated components of the synchrotron ring.
