Five commonly consumed vegetables in Malaysia namely, four-angled bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus D.C.), French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), long bean (Vigna sesquipedalis L.), snow pea (Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon L.) and snap pea (Pisum sativum) were blanched in boiling water for 10 min. The contents of total phenolics, ascorbic acid and β-carotene, and the antioxidant capacity as typified by β-carotene and free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) assays were determined for the raw and blanched vegetables. The study revealed that blanching caused a significant (p < 0.05) increase in β-carotene content [fresh (389–539 µg/100 g), blanched (510–818 µg/100 g)], except in snow pea. Conversely, there was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in ascorbic acid content [fresh (1.2–7.8 mg/100 g), blanched (0.67–3.8 mg/100 g)]. After blanching, the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity either decreased or increased depending on the type of vegetables. The total phenolic content was positively correlated with the antioxidant activity of the studied vegetables to some extent, but not with ascorbic acid or β-carotene.Industrial relevanceBeans (four-angled bean, French bean and long bean), and peas (snow and snap pea) are commonly consumed vegetables in Malaysia. However, the scientific information regarding blanching and its effect on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activities is very limited. This work showed that blanching caused an increase in the carotene, total phenolic content and antioxidant activities in some of the selected vegetables. An electronic nose (zNose™) was applied to the detection of adulteration of virgin coconut oil. The system, which is based
on a surface acoustic wave sensor was used to generate a pattern of volatile compounds present in the samples. Virgin coconut
oil was mixed with refined, bleached and deodorized palm kernel olein at a level of adulteration from 1 to 20% (wt/wt). Adulterant
peaks were identified from the chromatogram profile and fitted to a curve using linear regression. The best relationship (R
2 = 0.91) was obtained between the peak tentatively identified as methyl dodecanoate and the percentage of palm kernel olein
added. Pearson’s correlation coefficients (r) of 0.92 and 0.89 were obtained between adulterant peak methyl dodecanoate and of the iodine and peroxide values, respectively.
Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to differentiate between pure and adulterated samples. The PCA provided good differentiation
of samples with 74% of the variation accounted for by PC 1 and 17% accounted for by PC 2. Pure samples formed a separate cluster

Clarification of glycerin-rich solution is one of the potential applications of membrane within the oleochemical industry. However, one of the barriers in successfully utilizing the use of membranes such as ultrafiltration (UF) has been due to the fouling. In this work, flux decline during ultrafiltration of the glycerin-rich solutions was studied by using commercialized polymeric polyethersulphone (PES) membrane. Influence of fatty acids as foulants model (palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid), pH of feed solution (3-10) and molecular weight cut-off (5 kDa, 20 kDa and 25 kDa) were analyzed. All the experiments were performed at constant pressure (2 bar) and temperature (40 °C). The Hermia's model was used to analyze the fouling mechanism during the flux decline which involve cake layer model due to adsorption of solute as well as pore blocking model. All the different types of flux decline kinetics were found to occur during the permeation of glycerin-rich solutions. However, the contribution of resistance due to cake layer formation was small for all the conditions studied. The fouling mechanisms were found to depend on the hydrophobicity of the PES membrane itself as well as the nature of foulants used in the study. 相似文献

Simulated solar UV/TiO(2) photocatalysis was efficient to detoxify a mixture of 100 mgphenoll(-1) and 50 mgp-nitrophenol (PNP) l(-1) and allow the subsequent biodegradation of the remaining pollutants and their photocatalytic products under photosynthetic aeration with Chlorella vulgaris. Photocatalytic degradation of phenol and PNP was well described by pseudo-first order kinetics (r(2)>0.98) with removal rate constants of 1.9x10(-4) and 2.8x10(-4)min(-1), respectively, when the pollutants were provided together and 5.7x10(-4) and 9.7x10(-4)min(-1), respectively, when they were provided individually. Photocatalytic pre-treatment of the mixture during 60 h removed 50+/-1% and 62+/-2% of the phenol and PNP initially present but only 11+/-3% of the initial COD. Hydroquinone, nitrate and catechol were identified as PNP photocatalytic products and catechol and hydroquinone as phenol photocatalytic products. Subsequent biological treatment of the pre-treated samples removed the remaining contaminants and their photocatalytic products as well as 81-83% of the initial COD, allowing complete detoxification of the mixture to C. vulgaris. Similar detoxification efficiencies were recorded after biological treatment of the irradiated mixture with activated sludge microflora or with an acclimated consortia composed of a phenol-degrading Alcaligenes sp. and a PNP-degrading Arthrobacter sp., although the acclimated strains biodegraded the remaining pollutants faster. Biological treatment of the non-irradiated mixture was inefficient due to C. vulgaris inhibition. 相似文献

A green synthesis route for the production of silver nanoparticles using methanol extract from Solanum xanthocarpum berry (SXE) is reported in the present investigation. Silver nanoparticles (AgNps), having a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band centered at 406 nm, were synthesized by reacting SXE (as capping as well as reducing agent) with AgNO(3) during a 25 min process at 45 °C. The synthesized AgNps were characterized using UV-Visible spectrophotometry, powdered X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the time of reaction, temperature and volume ratio of SXE to AgNO(3) could accelerate the reduction rate of Ag(+) and affect the AgNps size and shape. The nanoparticles were found to be about 10 nm in size, mono-dispersed in nature, and spherical in shape. In vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori activity of synthesized AgNps was tested against 34 clinical isolates and two reference strains of Helicobacter pylori by the agar dilution method and compared with AgNO(3) and four standard drugs, namely amoxicillin (AMX), clarithromycin (CLA), metronidazole (MNZ) and tetracycline (TET), being used in anti-H. pylori therapy. Typical AgNps sample (S1) effectively inhibited the growth of H. pylori, indicating a stronger anti-H. pylori activity than that of AgNO(3) or MNZ, being almost equally potent to TET and less potent than AMX and CLA. AgNps under study were found to be equally efficient against the antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-susceptible strains of H. pylori. Besides, in the H. pylori urease inhibitory assay, S1 also exhibited a significant inhibition. Lineweaver-Burk plots revealed that the mechanism of inhibition was noncompetitive. 相似文献

The mushroom Inonotus obliquus has been widely used as a folk medicine in Russia, Poland and most of the Baltic countries. In this study, water-soluble and alkali-soluble crude polysaccharides (IOW and IOA) were isolated from I. obliquus, and the carbohydrate-rich fractions IOW-1 and IOA-1 were obtained respectively after deproteination and depigmentation. Their contents, such as neutral carbohydrate, uronic acid and protein, were measured. Their antioxidant properties against chemicals-induced reactive species (ROS) including 1,1'-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide anion radical, as well as their protective effects on H(2)O(2)-induced PC12 cell death were investigated. Results showed that I. obliquus polysaccharides can scavenge all ROS tested above in a dose-dependent manner. IOA and its product IOA-1 could rescue PC12 cell viability from 38.6% to 79.8% and 83.0% at a concentration of 20μg/mL. Similarly, IOW and its product IOW-1 at the same dose, can also increase cell viability to 84.9% and 88.6% respectively. The antioxidative activities of water-soluble and alkali-soluble polysaccharide constituents from I. obliquus might contribute to diverse medicinal and nutritional values of this mushroom. 相似文献

Poly[bis(4-hydroxyoctoxyphenyl)sulfone 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate] (PHOSFD) was synthesized by solution polycondensation reaction of bis(4-hydroxyoctoxyphenyl)sulfone with 1,1′-ferrocenyl chloride. The synthesized polymer was characterized via the measurement of its 1H NMR spectrum, UV–Vis spectrum and FTIR spectrum. X-ray diffraction pattern was measured to investigate the crystallinity of the synthesized polymer and it was found that the polymer is mostly amorphous. The molecular weight of the polymer was determined by gel permeation chromatography. In addition, the electrochemical, the thermal, and the liquid crystalline properties of the synthesized polymer were examined and compared with the properties of poly(diethyleneglycol 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PDEFD) that was synthesized in our earlier study. The electrochemical processes of PHOSFD in CH2Cl2 were confirmed neither to be totally reversible nor completely irreversible. Generally, the electrochemical properties of PHOSFD and PDEFD were found to be similar to each other. PHOSFD was found to be thermally stable but its thermal stability is lower than that of PDEFD. Both of PHOSFD and PDEFD showed liquid crystalline properties and they possessed nematic phase textures with schlieren disclinations during heating and cooling. 相似文献

The major objective of biomass pyrolysis is to produce liquid fuel, which is easier to transport, store and can be an alternative to energy source. The yield and composition of pyrolysis oil depend upon biomass feedstock and operating parameters. It is often necessary to explore about the effect of variables on response yield and instinct about their optimization. This study reviews operating variables from existing literature on biomass pyrolysis. The major operating variables include final pyrolysis temperature, inert gas sweeping, residence times, rate of biomass heating, mineral matter, size of biomass particle and moisture contents of biomass. A three-layered gum tablet (1800 mg), containing 200 mg of Fenoprofen Calcium (Fn) with an inner core containing the drug, and two external layers containing antiadherent lubricant, has been prepared using direct compression. A 2(3) factorial plan has been designed to evaluate the effect of formulation variables namely, Pharmagum(?) M concentration, Maltodextrin type, and Co-adjuvant type on the release characteristics of Fn from the prepared tablets. The formula consisting of 65% Pharmagum(?) M, 75% Maltodextrin DE 39 and 5% Talc comparatively exhibited the highest release (66.59% ± 2.39) in the mouth after 5 min of chewing. Binary and ternary β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complexation was adopted to enhance the release of Fn from the selected gum tablet. The highest significant release (p < 0.05) was achieved from the lyophilized ternary complex containing 100 mg of Fn in presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K(25)), exhibiting a release of 88.25% ± 0.93 after 5 min of chewing. The relative bioavailability of the selected gum tablet was found to be 166.06% compared to Nalfon(?) 200 mg capsules. Reduction of the dose to 100 mg exhibited faster absorption rate than Nalfon(?) capsules. The obtained results suggest the possibility of reducing the dose of Fn in chewing gum. 相似文献
