Ultralow sidelobe-level integrated acoustooptic tunable filtersusing tapered-gap surface acoustic wave directional couplers

We propose a new weighted-coupling scheme using tapered-gap surface acoustic wave directional couplers for realization of ultralow sidelobe-level integrated acoustooptic tunable filters (IAOTF's). Appropriate design analysis has been carried out for 30-mm-long filters operating at an optical wavelength of 1.55 μm in an X-cut Y-propagating LiNbO₃ substrate. New synthesized weighting functions have been used for the improvement of sidelobe level suppression over existing single-stage filters by as much as 27 dB. The -20 dB mainlobe width of the resulting IAOTF's varies from 2.7 to 3.9 nm only for the worst sidelobe levels ranging from -30.6 to -44.7 dB, respectively. It has also been shown that further suppression of sidelobe levels by 3-9 dB is possible if the filter is underdriven at 80% mode-conversion efficiency     

P-N double quantum well resonant interband tunneling diode withpeak-to-valley current ratio of 144 at room temperature

The current-voltage characteristics of the P-N double quantum well resonant interband tunneling (RIT) diodes in InAlAs-InGaAs system have been improved in this letter. The peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) is as high as 144 at room temperature. As we know, this is the highest room temperature PVCR ever reported in any tunneling devices. Moreover, the influence of the central barrier thickness varying from 10 Å to 30 Å on the device characteristics is also studied

Essential SMSs: developing a service management scheme for semiconductor factory management systems

A semiconductor factory contains hundreds of pieces of equipment. More reliable service by equipment managers is required to increase the utilization of equipment and improve product quality and yield. Therefore, developing a reliable service management scheme (SMS) for semiconductor factory management systems is essential. This study presents an SMS that applies Jini Technology and uses the design by contract technologies. The SMS has error-detecting and function-replacing capabilities. The SMS detects the malfunctioning of an equipment manager (service) and sends an event notice to the factory manager. The GEV in the SMS archives the credit values of all of the equipment managers so that the factory manager can select better equipment managers for service by checking their credit values. The illustrative example and the evaluation of the reliability improvement reveal that the proposed SMS provides an efficient, reliable, fault tolerant, and cost-effective mechanism for semiconductor factory management systems. Lastly, this illustrative example is successfully implemented and demonstrated and the core technology of SMS is transferred to and commercialized by Charming Systems Corporation.     

Do We Stand on Common Ground? A Threat Appraisal Model for Terror Alerts Issued by the Department of Homeland Security

The fabric and faces of threat, and the expediency and efficiency in the communication of threat, are examined with a threat appraisal model. This model is empirically tested on an ongoing communication challenge, the issuance of terror alerts by the United States' Department of Homeland Security (DHS), focusing on how threat is appraised by both the conservative and liberal audiences. Findings showed a shared view by the DHS and conservative audiences on the levels and nature of threats; liberal audiences thought otherwise. Though there appeared to be a consensus between the conservative and liberal audiences on the efficacy of threat communication, more internal consistency within DHS is needed to optimise its effectiveness.     

FBOLES—outline of a frequency-based on-line expert system approach for fault diagnoses in nuclear power plants

The basic concept of a novel frequency-based on-line expert system (FBOLES) approach for on-line fault diagnoses in nuclear power plants has been presented previously. This paper reports further progress, and includes how to express the uncertainties of expert opinion in knowledge-bases and propagate then in inferences, and how to deal with imperfect knowledge-bases. It also describes the main elements of FBOLES and outlines how the system works under complex conditions including the dynamic behavior of signals during accidents, multiple failures, and on-line changes of plant operation mode. Its ability to diagnose root causes of accidents has been tested using the main steam and feedwater condensate systems of a full-scale, three-loop, 950 MW nuclear power plant simulated by the Tsinghua simulator. So far the results seem good.     

Multivariable controller design in an adaptive control scheme

A multivariable control system design approach in the frequency domain is presented. The issue of control system redesign in an adaptive control scheme is discussed. Expert system techniques have been used for the automated design of controllers for multivariable systems. Design knowledge has been represented using rules, facts and objects. The design process consists of a sequence of operations obtained by heuristics and experience in the the design techniques. An automated design session of a multivariable plant using the expert system demonstrates that the expert system appears to work well in its prototype implementation.     

A 24-GHz 3.9-dB NF low-noise amplifier using 0.18 /spl mu/m CMOS technology

A 24-GHz low-noise amplifier (LNA) was designed and fabricated in a standard 0.18-/spl mu/m CMOS technology. The LNA chip achieves a peak gain of 13.1 dB at 24 GHz and a minimum noise figure of 3.9 dB at 24.3 GHz. The supply voltage and supply current are 1 V and 14 mA, respectively. To the author's knowledge, this LNA demonstrates the lowest noise figure among the reported LNAs in standard CMOS processes above 20 GHz.     

纸张用有机硅抗水剂的制备

采用氨基硅油、十二烷基三甲氧基硅烷、甲基三乙氧基硅烷配成11种抗水剂,用于纸张的抗水处理.通过渗透法和接触角法测试发现,有机硅抗水剂对实验选择的9种纸张均有明显的抗水效果;其中采用氨基硅油配制的抗水剂效果最好,经其处理的生宣纸与空白样相比,接触角由完全润湿提高到125°,渗透时间由0提高到18 s.最佳应用工艺为:将氨基硅油配制成质量分数为2.041%的甲苯溶液,按照10g/m2的涂布量喷涂于纸张表面,自然晾干3～5天至恒定质量.
