Properties of thin TiN films deposited onto stainless steel by an in-line dry coating process

A new coil-coating pilot plant, capable of utilizing ion plating, sputtering and plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) processes, independently or in series, was developed and optimum conditions for TiN, TiC, Al_xO_y, SiO_x and Cr coating were established. This paper is mostly concerned with the results of characterization (conducted in parallel by the authors′ two institutions) of TiN films deposited by ion plating or sputtering onto type-304 stainless steel strips. In particular, the dependence of the basic properties such as chemical composition, structure, adhesion, and color on the coating process are discussed with respect to anti-corrosion, anti-wear, and decorative applications. TiN coatings with a very attractive gold coloration were obtained; they performed well in wear testing, but did not show satisfactory corrosion resistance. However, it was found that the latter can be improved significantly by depositing a SiO_x, top layer by PACVD above the TiN coating. Thus the in-line dry coating processes are capable of producing highly functional steel surfaces with decorative color and high corrosion resistance.     

Westernized food habits and concentrations of serum lipids in the Japanese

It has recently been reported that there exists a new 'RING-finger' protein family among the zinc-finger (Zf) proteins. Previously, we had isolated the mouse Mel-18 cDNA (mMel-18) encoding the nuclear RING-finger protein that exhibits an ability to bind to a nonspecific DNA column. Here, we have isolated and characterized the human Mel-18 cDNA (hMel-18) using the mMel-18 cDNA as a probe. The deduced hMel-18 protein contains 344 amino acids (38 kDa) with a RING-finger motif, a helix-loop-helix (HLH)-like structure and a Pro/Ser-rich region. The hMel-18 gene is conserved among vertebrates. Its mRNA is highly expressed in placenta, lung and kidney, but the level is low in liver, pancreas and skeletal muscle. Using in situ hybridization, we mapped hMel-18 to band q22 of chromosome 12. It is possible that the Mel-18/bmi-1 gene family represents a mammalian homologue of the Drosophila polycomb gene group.     

Intramolecular triplet energy migration in poly(2-vinylnaphthalene) and poly(naphthylalkyl methacrylate)s in solid solution: Effects of side chain length

Summary The effect of side chain length on intramolecular triplet energy migration of naphthalene containing polymers was investigated by a delayed fluorescence (DF) spectroscopy for the solid solution of the polymers. The degree of triplet energy migration depends strongly on whether the chromophores are directly attached to the main chain or not.     

Zero and first sound velocity and Fermi liquid parameterF 2 s in normal3He

A precise velocity measurement of zero and first sound in normal³He was performed over the pressure range of 0.5 bar and 10 bar at a frequency of 389.1 MHz using a phase detection technique. From these measurements, the Fermi liquid parameter F ₂ ^s was determined as a function of pressure. The new value of F ₂ ^s was positive and less than 0.25 at all pressures below 10 bar. It allows propagation of transverse zero sound mode for all pressures within the current theoretical picture.     

The public's knowledge about psychologists and other mental health professionals.

A random sample of New London County, Connecticut, residents received a questionnaire about 9 mental health professions or professionals (MHPs): clergyperson, marriage and family counselor, nonpsychiatric physician, psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse, psychologist, psychotherapist, social worker, and telephone crisis counselor. Respondents defined each MHP and reported their satisfaction with treatment, which MHP they would recommend, their referral source(s), licensure requirements, and fees. A mixed-design ANOVA was computed, with comfortableness as the dependent variable; age, sex, saw an MHP, and education, the between-Ss variables; and the 9 MHPs, the within-Ss variable. A significant MHP effect showed that physicians were perceived as slightly more comfortable than were psychologists (nonsignificant), who, nevertheless, were perceived as exceeding all other trained MHPs in the comfortableness experienced by their clients. Simulation of toxic gases and vapours removal by activated carbon filters

The system ASC carbon filter/cyanogen chloride was studied by simulation. Three filter configurations and several models, taking into account Langmuir adsorption and second-order reaction between the adsorbed toxic vapour and the active metal on the surface, were developed.The effects of axial dispersion, number of reaction units, film mass transfer units and intraparticle mass transfer resistance on the breakthrough time were studied.Simulation results show that a complex model should be used in order to predict with reasonable accuracy the protection imparted by these filters.     

An over 2200-km coherent transmission experiment at 2.5 Gb/s usingerbium-doped-fiber in-line amplifiers

A 2223 km transmission distance was achieved with a 2.5-Gb/s heterodyne detection system that used erbium-doped-fiber in-line amplifiers and dispersion-shifted single-mode fibers. Twenty-five amplifiers, placed at approximately 80-km intervals, offered a total gain of more than 440 dB. Receiver sensitivity was -42.0 dBm, with only a 4.2-dB penalty from the initial sensitivity achieved by the back-to-back configuration     

School and peer competence in early adolescence: A test of domain-specific self-perceived competence.

The validity for a domain-specific model of self-perceived peer and school competence was examined in a sample of young Black adolescents of lower socioeconomic status. Three methods were used to gauge peer and school competence: self-ratings, via the Perceived Social Competence Scale for Children; peer-ratings, based on nominations; and objective criteria, such as grade point average, achievement test scores, and number of reciprocated friendship choices. More generally defined measures of social competence (i.e., perceived general competence and the Social Competence Nomination Form) were included in some analyses for purposes of comparison. Correlations within and between competence domains were examined via both a multitrait-multimethod matrix and factor analysis. Findings supported the distinctness of perceived peer and school competence domains, providing support for a domain-specific model of self-concept. Head-to-head polymers: 33. Bromination of cis-1,4-polybutadiene to head-to-head poly(vinyl bromide)

Cis-1,4-polybutadiene (PB) in a 0.5% solution of a solvent mixture of dichloromethane and 1,2-dibromoethane or tetrahydrofuran was quantitatively brominated with elemental bromine at 0°C under careful exclusion of oxygen to head-to-head poly(vinyl bromide). Partially brominated PB has a structure of random or block sequences of butadiene units in the polymer depending on the bromination solvent but shows no stereospecificity in the CHBrCHBr-dyads. Partially brominated PB with block structure showed a microphase-separated morphology over a wide range of composition. Microphase separation is less pronounced for the more random structure of butadiene units. I.r and ¹³C n.m.r. spectroscopy of the partially brominated PB was used to follow the progress of the bromination.
