Effects on response rates of formal and informal questionnaire follow-up techniques.

Sent humorous, whimsical, and formal follow-ups, and hand-addressed and typed label-addressed follow-ups, to 210 college administrators, 344 faculty members, 2,288 graduate assistants, and 785 undergraduates. Administrators responded more to a formal follow-up than did undergraduates. Graduate assistants responded more to a whimsical follow-up than did undergraduates and more to a humorous follow-up than did faculty. Undergraduates showed greater response to a humorous follow-up than did graduate assistants and to hand-addressed follow-up postcards than to those with typed labels. It is concluded that different techniques are more effective with different groups, and that it is important not to issue universal recommendations for follow-up strategies. Surgical treatment of renovascular hypertension

Two hundred sixty-four patients exhibiting renal artery occlusive disease underwent operation for renovascular hypertension between 1961 and 1977. Included were 27 pediatric patients. Fibrodysplastic disease affected 132 adults. Atherosclerotic lesions affected 51 patients with and 54 patients without clinically overt extrarenal arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Ischemic kidney renin hypersecretion (renal: systemic index greater than 0.48), associated with suppressed contralateral kidney renin secretion (renal: systemic index approaching 0.0) predicted curability most reliably. Three hundred forty-eight operations were performed, of which 297 were primary and 51 were secondary procedures. Nephrectomy was initial therapy in 15 cases. Three operative deaths occurred among 51 patients manifesting overt extrarenal arteriosclerotic disease. No operative mortality was encountered among the other 213 patients. Surgical benefits were afforded 96% of pediatric patients and adults with fibrodysplastic disease, 91% of patients with focal renal arteriosclerosis, and 73% of those exhibiting overt extrarenal arteriosclerosis.     

Studies on the antitesticular action of DL-6-(N-2-pipecolinomethyl)-5-hydroxy-indane (PMHI) in the rat

Both prepubertal and adult rats were treated with a single oral dose of either 60 mg or 120 mg of dl-6-(N-pipecolinomethyl)-5-hydroxy indane maleate (PMHI) per kg of body weight. Their testicular weights were drastically reduced compared with those of the controls. A follow-up, beginning on the third day post-treatment and continuing for a period of 50 days, showed that the body weight growth of PMHI-treated rats was not retarded. The hormonal profile indicated that, except for FSH which showed a transitory elevation in PMHI-treated immature rats, the serum levels of LH, estrogen, and testosterone were indistinguishable from those of the controls. Testicular histology revealed that the spermatogenic process in PMHI-treated rats recovered at a dose-related rate. EM sections of testes of adult rats indicated that cytoplasmic vacuolation appeared in the Sertoli cells 5 h post-treatment. The consequent cascade of arrested spermiogenesis included abnormal acrosomal condensation of spermatids and sloughing of polynucleated spermatids. Some spermatocytes also seemed to be affected, but spermatogonia and Leydig cells remained intact. These results indicate the PMHI acts primarily on Sertoli cells and causes arrest in the spermiogenetic stage of the spermatids. At a higher and toxic dose of PMHI, however, the earlier germinal elements might also be affected, due to the extensive damage to the supporting Sertoli cells.     

On the use of tapered bismuth germanate crystals in positron emission tomography

An analytical model of gamma ray transport within the detectors of a positron camera, based on exponential absorption, has been developed and verified experimentally. The model has been used to study the intrinsic resolution obtained with scintillation detectors that have had their front corners removed. It is concluded that for crystals greater than 0.8 cm wide, tapering the face of the detector results in improved uniformity of resolution. Thus it is useful for medium and low resolution scanners. In these cases, it has been found that the loss in sensitivity resulting from the use of tapered crystals is less than that which occurs when septa are placed between crystals to achieve comparable uniformity of resolution. It has also been established that, in some instances, reducing the length of the detectors results in a more uniform resolution than that obtained with tapered crystals, although this leads to a loss in ring sensitivity and an increase in the detected scatter fraction.     

Lattice mismatched InGaAs on silicon photodetectors grown by molecular beam epitaxy

In_0.5Ga_0.5As on silicon photodetectors, including three types of interdigitated-finger devices as well as linear photoconductors, were fabricated and measured. The InGaAs/Si structure was grown by molecular beam epitaxy and utilized a 100 Å GaAs intervening nucleation layer between the silicon substrate and the InGaAs layers, step-graded In_xGa_1?xAs layers, and an in-situ grown 40 Å thick GaAs surface layer, which substantially enhanced the metal-semiconductor barrier height (Φ_b = 0.67 V) for the InGaAs. Schottky diodes fabricated independently of the photodetectors had nearly ideal characteristics with an ideality factor (n) of 1.02 and a reverse breakdown voltage of 40 V. The interdigitated Schottky photodetectors showed dark currents between <3nA and 54 μA at a 3 V bias and initial photoresponse rise times in the range of 600 to 725 ps, comparable to similar InGaAs metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors grown lattice matched on InP. The photoconductors fabricated in the same material had rise times in the range of 575 to 1300 ps, thus being slightly slower, and had dark currents of 7 to 80 mA. The responsivity of the photoconductors was typically greater than that of the diodes by a factor of five to fifteen. The results show potential for monolithic integration of InGaAs photodetectors on silicon substrates.     

Antimicrobial drug use in hospitals in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium

Data on the use of antimicrobial drugs was collected by means of an inquiry to 30 hospitals in Belgium (15 in Dutch sectors and 15 in the French sectors), 21 hospitals in Germany and 20 hospitals in the Netherlands. The use of these drugs was expressed as the number of defined daily doses (DDD) per 100 bed days by the anatomical therapeutical chemical classification system. The total use of antimicrobial agents was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in both parts of Belgium (55.6 and 52.0 DDD per 100 bed days) than in Germany (37.9 DDD) or the Netherlands (34.1 DDD). In particular, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, the first- and second-generation cephalosporins, aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones were used more in Belgium than in either of the other countries. At least part of the differences observed in antimicrobial drug use could be explained by differences in written antibiotic policy.
