For people with upper limb disabilities visual art is an important activity that allows for expression of individuality and
independence. They show remarkable endurance, patience and determination to adapt their remaining capabilities to create visual
art. There are significant advantages of digital technologies in assisting artists with upper limb disabilities. Paralinguistic
voice recognition technologies have proven to be a particularly promising mode of interaction. Despite these benefits, technological
support for people with upper limb disabilities to create visual art is scarce. This paper reports on a number of case studies
of several artists with upper limb disabilities. These case studies illustrate the struggles they face to be creative and
also show the significant advantages of digital technologies in assisting such artists. An investigation into people’s ability
to use the volume of their voice to control cursor movement to create drawings on the screen is also reported. With motivation,
training and practise, use of volume to control drawing tasks shows great promise. It is believed that paralinguistic voice
has wider implications beyond assisting artists with upper limb disabilities, such as: an alternative mode of interaction
for disabled people to perform tasks other than creating visual art, alternative mode of interaction for hands busy environments

This paper describes the development of a system for measuring surface coordinates (commonly known as "shape measurements") which is able to give the temporal evolution of the position of the tire sidewall in transient conditions (such as during braking, when there are potholes or when the road surface is uneven) which may or may not be reproducible. The system is based on the well-known technique of projecting and observing structured light using a digital camera with an optical axis which is slanted with respect to the axis of the projector. The transient nature of the phenomenon has led to the development of specific innovative solutions as regards image processing algorithms. This paper briefly describes the components which make up the measuring system and presents the results of the measurements carried out on the drum bench. It then analyses the performance of the measuring system and the sources of uncertainty which led to the development of the system for a specific dynamic application: impact with an obstacle (cleat test). The measuring system guaranteed a measurement uncertainty of 0.28 mm along the Z axis (the axial direction of the tire) with a measurement range of 250(X) x 80(Y) x 25(Z) mm(3), with the tire rolling at a speed of up to 30 km/h. 相似文献

We have developed a simple and accurate method for calibrating the amplitude of vibration of quartz tuning fork sensors commonly used in atomic force- and near field optical-microscopy. Unlike interferometric methods, which require a complex optical setup, the method we present requires only a simple measurement of the electro-mechanical properties of the tuning-fork oscillator and can be performed in a matter of minutes without disturbing the experimental setup. We describe a project to capitalize on newly available levels of computational resources in order to understand human cognition. We are building an integrated physical system including vision, sound input and output, and dextrous manipulation, all controlled by a continuously operating large scale parallel MIMD computer. The resulting system will learn to think by building on its bodily experiences to accomplish progressively more abstract tasks. Past experience suggests that in attempting to build such an integrated system we will have to fundamentally change the way artificial intelligence, cognitive science, linguistics, and philosophy think about the organization of intelligence.
