Previous study showed that repetitive mild decontamination treatments with intense light pulses (ILP) and lactic acid (LA) can induce increased resistance in surviving pathogenic cells. Research has evaluated the potential of increased resistance to enhance the persistence of resistant variants of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 under suboptimal growth conditions. Growth of resistant variants and parental strains was determined by optical density (OD) measurements in nutrient broths with different pH values and NaCl concentration, at low temperature. The real lag phase was calculated, and results indicated that intense light pulses (ILP) resistant variants needed longer time to initiate growth compared to their parental strains, for both L. monocytogenes and E. coli O157:H7 when incubated at 7 °C and 10 °C, respectively. These selected variants were of the similar resistance towards heat and low pH (no cross-tolerance). Nevertheless, lactic acid (LA) resistant variant of L. monocytogenes was cross-protected when exposed to low pH, but not when treated with heat. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Over recent years, food producers have devoted much attention to the production of safe foods. Simultaneously, using advanced process technologies, it has been necessary to carefully select materials for use in process equipment. Milk and its products are exposed to metal surfaces from the time they are processed, through the various stages of handling and manufacture, to the packaging of the finished products for market. The selection of suitable materials for daily use in the dairy industry cannot be governed solely by their price and mechanical properties but must also take into consideration their influence on the quality of milk products. RESULTS: This paper presents the results of testing the corrosion resistance of three stainless steels during the fermentation of a specific probiotic drink, kefir. Experiments were conducted using preliminarily activated kefir grains as a starter culture. Corrosion resistance was studied using a gravimetric and two electrochemical methods. The two steels showing the best corrosion performance differed mainly in their Mo and Nb contents. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that Nb played the most protective role against corrosion during kefir fermentation, since the steel containing Nb but no Mo showed the lowest corrosion rate. In this work, the results of compositional and microstructural analysis of lead zirconate titanate--lanthanum ruthenate thin film structures prepared by chemical solution deposition are discussed. The cross-section transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrographs of the La-Ru-O film deposited on a SiO2/Si substrate and annealed at 700 degrees C revealed RuO2 crystals embedded in a glassy silicate matrix. When the La-Ru-O film was deposited on a Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate, RuO2 and La4Ru6O19 crystallized after annealing at 700 degrees C. After firing at 550 degrees C randomly oriented lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films crystallized on the La-Ru-O/SiO2/Si substrate, while on La-Ru-O/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates PZT thin films with (111) preferred orientation were obtained. No diffusion of the Ru atoms in the PZT film was found. Ferroelectric response of PZT thin films on these substrates is shown in comparison with the PZT film deposited directly on the Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate without a La-Ru-O layer. 相似文献

Berry anthocyanins have pronounced health effects, even though they have a low bioavailability. The common mechanism underlying health protection is believed to relate to antioxidant activity. Berry extracts, chemically characterised for their phenolic content, were prepared from bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.); the bilberry extract was further purified to obtain the anthocyanin fraction. The antioxidant activity of each extract was examined at the cellular level. For this purpose a specific assay, known as cellular antioxidant activity assay (CAA), was implemented in different cell lines: human colon cancer (Caco-2), human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2), human endothelial (EA.hy926) and rat vascular smooth muscle (A7r5). Here we show for the first time that anthocyanins had intracellular antioxidant activity if applied at very low concentrations (<1 μg/l; nM range), thereby providing a long-sought rationale for their health protecting effects in spite of their unfavorable pharmacokinetic properties. 相似文献

Designing multicaloric single-phase materials with combined electro- and magnetocaloric effects is still at its initial stage and presents a number of challenges. One of the main challenges encountered so far is to reduce the excessive electrical conductivity, which leads to the appearance of Joule heating that might completely degrade the electrocaloric response. In this work, multicaloric Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 material was successfully prepared exhibiting pronounced electrocaloric effect above room temperature and maximum magnetocaloric effect at cryogenic temperature. The conductivity was suppressed by controlling the sintering temperature. The ceramic sintered at 1000 °C exhibits maximum electrocaloric effective cooling of 0.88 °C at 28 °C and maximum magnetocaloric effect of 0.14 °C at ?271 °C. The caloric properties can be further improved by doping Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 with manganese. In comparison to the undoped sample, Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 doped with 0.5 mol% of manganese exhibits three times higher maxima of electrocaloric effective cooling (2.47 °C at 80 °C) and magnetocaloric temperature change (0.44 °C at ?271 °C). 相似文献

Heat Integration has been established over the last decades as a proven chemical engineering methodology. Two design implementations are often used in the industry: grassroots and retrofit. Although various methods have been developed for retrofit, it still needs more development to ensure simultaneously thermodynamic feasibility and economic viability. In this paper, a novel graphical approach has been developed to facilitate the understanding of the current situation and scope of improvement. The Retrofit Tracing Grid Diagram presents all streams and heat exchangers in temperature scale and the heat exchangers are clearly separated from each other, enabling clear visualisation of the current state. The tool incorporates the previously developed Cross-Pinch Analysis as well as path approach for retrofit. Additionally, the non-vertical heat transfer can be evaluated. The application of the developed tool has been validated on an oil refinery case study. The applicability of the tool is evident as it can reveal additional options for modification that none of the previous methods considered. 相似文献

Rheological examination of temperature dependence of conventional and polymer‐modified road bitumens
Rheological characterization of two types of road bitumens, conventional and polymer‐modified, has been examined in the temperature range between 20°C and 140°C. Tests were carried out before and after ageing following a thin‐film oven test. Polymer‐modified bitumens exhibit non‐Newtonian behaviour up to the 120°C due to a complex secondary structure formed by added polymers. For conventional bitumens, Newtonian behaviour was observed above 60°C. Special attention was paid to measurements and to analysis of the dynamic data of oscillatory shear. The mechanical spectra in a wide frequency range have been obtained using the WLF time‐temperature superposition principle. The analysis of viscoelastic data clearly showed the differences between the two types of bitumen. Conventional bitumens were more sensitive to temperature and to the ageing effects. For polymer modified bitumens, the elastic contribution to viscoelastic response was more pronounced, and independent of temperature and ageing. 相似文献

Human milk not only provides a perfect balance of nutrients to meet all the needs of the infant in the first months of life but also contains a variety of bacteria that play a key role in tailoring the neonatal faecal microbiome. Microbiome analysis of human milk and infant faeces from mother-breastfed infant pairs was performed by sequencing the V1–V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene using the Illumina MiSeq platform. According to the results, there is a connection in the composition of the microbiome in each mother-breastfed infant pair, supporting the hypothesis that the infant’s gut is colonised with bacteria from human milk. MiSeq sequencing also revealed high biodiversity of the human milk microbiome and the infant faecal microbiome, whose composition changes during lactation and infant development, respectively. A total of 28 genetically distinct strains were selected by hierarchical cluster analysis of RAPD-PCR (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction) electrophoresis profiles of 100 strains isolated from human milk and identified by 16S RNA sequencing. Since certain cellular molecules may support their use as probiotics, the next focus was to detect (S)-layer proteins, bacteriocins and exopolysaccharides (EPSs) that have potential as therapeutic biomolecules. SDS-PAGE (Sodium Dodecyl-Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) coupled with LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) analysis revealed that four Levilactobacillus brevis strains expressed S-layer proteins, which were identified for the first time in strains isolated from human milk. The potential biosynthesis of plantaricin was detected in six Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains by PCR analysis and in vitro antibacterial studies. 1H NMR (Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analysis confirmed EPS production in only one strain, Limosilactobacillus fermentum MC1. The overall microbiome analysis suggests that human milk contributes to the establishment of the intestinal microbiota of infants.
