A system was devised which allows particles to remain in suspension in a conventional 60 L aquarium without undue disturbance to resident fish. Using this system, juvenile rainbow trout were exposed for one week to 4-tert-octylphenol (OP, 10-1000 μg/L) with or without the presence of suspended sediments (10-20 mg/L of natural suspended sediments from the River Calder, UK). About 8% of the added OP partitioned to the solid phase. Vitellogenin levels were determined in the plasma of the exposed rainbow trout and showed a dose-dependent increase with regards to OP exposure concentration. Considerable variation in the vitellogenin response was observed between separate runs with the same OP concentration. There was no statistically significant (at P < 0.05) difference in plasma VTG levels between the OP treatments with or without suspended sediments. This suggests that the dissolved concentration is the key factor and natural suspended sediment neither protects against, nor exacerbates, the endocrine disrupting effect of OP on fish. 相似文献

One of the causes of organoleptic changes in milk, lipid peroxidation, has been monitored by a sensitive assay newly applied to foodstuffs. It has been shown that even at medium radiation doses (up to 3600 Gy) negligible lipid peroxidation takes place, providing the milk is thoroughly gassed with nitrogen. Using a test spoilage microorganism, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Schroeter), it was shown that the D10 was 35 Gy in air and 105 Gy under anaerobic conditions. Dose/survival curves indicate that 5 decades of killing needed 200 Gy in air and 600 Gy under nitrogen. However, even after receiving a dose of 1600 Gy, both aerobically and anaerobically treated milk failed the methylene blue test at 21 days post-irradiation. The data indicate that, although the deleterious lipid peroxidation effects of irradiation can be minimised by the removal of air, this in turn results in a degree of protection being afforded to the bacteria, and that doses in excess of 1600 Gy are needed to effectively sterilise milk. 相似文献

The production and stability of glyoxylic acid was followed during the storage of tartaric acid solutions under various conditions. The solutions were prepared both with and without ethanol. Quantification of glyoxylic acid and other oxidation products, including hydrogen peroxide and formic acid, were performed using ion exclusion chromatography. Glyoxylic acid was only detected in tartaric acid samples that had been stored outdoors and sunlight was identified as the critical component of outdoor storage that allowed its formation. The hydrogen peroxide and glyoxylic acid generated under these conditions were of limited stability due to their reaction with each other to produce formic acid. The concentration of the glyoxylic acid was greatly increased when ethanol was omitted from the sample matrix. Copper(II) enhanced the stability of glyoxylic acid but slowed its production. The reaction pathway responsible for the sunlight-induced production and subsequent stability of glyoxylic acid is discussed. 相似文献

This paper describes an experiment in which it was determined that properly designed burn-in can not only eliminate a weak subpopulation, but also stabilize the healthy one. Accelerated life tests have been carried out on 30W sign lamps to show that the time-to-failure pattern is bimodal. The accelerated life data have been used to design burn-in process parameters, and to determine the deterioration caused in the healthy subpopulation by the chosen burn-in. The results showed no decrease in mean life of the healthy lamps. Rather, increased stability (lower standard deviation in life) has been observed. The burn-in procedure with parameters 240V and duration in the range 15-20s was successfully applied to the 30W sign lamps in order to eliminate the weak subpopulation. Due to fast turnaround of the procedure it can be implemented at the end of the production line. The high temperature thermal treatment of filaments during burn-in seems to relax structural stresses caused by fabrication process. The fact that the power coefficient obtained here differs from the one quoted by GE Technical Information TP-110 as well as by IES Lighting Handbook (Reference Volume 1984) should alert users of accelerated reliability tests to be wary of uncritical application of experimental factors taken from the literature, including this paper. 相似文献

Feeding-related gustatory, olfactory, and visual activation of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) decreases following satiety. Previous neurophysiological studies have concentrated on the caudolateral OFC (clOFC). We describe satiety-induced modulation of 23 gustatory, 5 water, and 15 control neurons in the medial OFC (mOFC), where gustatory neurons represent a much larger percentage of the population. For 15 of the 23 gustatory neurons (65%), every significant taste response evoked during pre-satiety testing decreased following satiety (X=70%). Responses evoked by the ineffective taste stimuli during pre-satiety testing were unchanged following satiety. The graded response decrements of the mOFC gustatory neurons stand in marked contrast to the clOFC responses, which are almost completely suppressed by satiety. Two other novel findings are reported here. First, all significant pre-satiety taste responses of four gustatory neurons increased following satiety (X=51%). Second, post-satiety emergent taste responses were observed in 7 of 15 neurons (47%) classified as non-responsive during pre-satiety testing. The presence of increased responsiveness and emergent gustatory neurons in the mOFC suggests that meal termination may require active processes as well as the passive loss of hedonic value. Spontaneous EEG can display spatio-temporal patterns of desynchronized or synchronized alpha band activity. Event-related desynchronization (ERD) of rhythms within alpha and lower beta bands is characteristic of activated cortical areas ready to process information or to prepare a movement, while event-related synchronization (ERS) in the same frequency bands can be seen as an electrophysiological correlate of resting or idling cortical areas. EEG was investigated over primary sensorimotor and premotor areas during discrete hand and foot movements. ERD was found over the primary hand area during finger movement and over the primary foot area during toe movement. The former was observed in every subject, the latter was more difficult to find. From these results it can be speculated that each primary sensorimotor area has its own intrinsic rhythm, which becomes desynchronized when the corresponding area is activated. ERS, in the form of an enhanced mu rhythm on electrodes overlying the primary hand area, was observed not only during visual processing but also during foot movement. In both cases, the hand area is not needed to perform a task and, therefore, can be considered to be in an idling state. The supplementary motor area (SMA) also plays an important role in preparation and planning of movement. It is demonstrated that this area also displays rhythmic activity within the alpha band, that is both linearly and non-linearly phase coupled to the intrinsic (mu) rhythm of the primary hand area. The purpose of this article is to further graduate-level education and training in child sexual abuse. Two graduate-level courses that focus on child sexual abuse are considered as well. The following points are made: (a) Training in child sexual abuse should be incorporated into professional training programs; (b) research and theory courses on child sexual abuse are indicated; (c) the topic of child sexual abuse should be mainstreamed into existing practica; (d) the multidisciplinary nature of the field necessitates consideration of resources and references beyond those specific to psychology as well as professional engagement with individuals from many disciplines; and (e) training in child sexual abuse elicits strong emotional responses in trainees and others. The impact of grades on daily self-esteem, affect, and identification with major was examined in a sample of 122 male and female students majoring in engineering and psychology. Self-esteem, affect, and identification with major increased on days students received good grades and decreased on days they received poor grades: basing self-esteem on academic competence moderated the effect of bad grades. Bad grades led to greater drops in self-esteem but not more disidentification with the major for women in engineering.
