Flat mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) comprising polysulfone and clinoptilolite-type natural zeolite were prepared by casting. Zeolite was modified with three alkylamines: ethanolamine (EA), bis(2-hydroxypropyl)amine (BHPA), and polyethylenimine (PEI) by the impregnation method. Impregnated zeolite samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption. The alkylamine loading extent determined by thermogravimetric analysis was 5.2, 4.8, and 8.5% for EA, BHPA, and PEI, respectively. Analyses of MMMs showed that the incorporation of impregnated zeolite affected the glass-transition temperature (Tg) and mixed-gas transport properties. In this regard, a decreasing trend of the Tg values from 185.5 °C for the polymeric membrane up to 176.6 °C for Clino-EA-based MMM was recorded. In addition, the gas separation performance was evaluated at two different feed pressures. At 50 psi, MMMs showed an enhancement up to 30% on the CO2 permeability (22.79 Barrer) and 55% on the CO2/CH4 selectivity (45.78) in comparison with the polymeric membrane (CO2 permeability 17.34 Barrer; CO2/CH4 selectivity 29.38). The overall objective of this research was to correlate the processing—fiber arrangement—properties relationships of composites. In order to do this, an experimental technique to quantitatively characterize the fiber arrangement was developed. Using this technique, the compression molded graphite/epoxy composites, CMC, were found to have a standard deviation of fiber spacing of about twice the value of those from the simulated random composites, SRC. The standard deviation of fiber volume fraction for CMC was about 4 times the value of SRC. In other words, the fibers in this laboratory CMC were poorly distributed relative to SRC.  相似文献

Effects of N2 sintering atmosphere and the starting SiC powder on the microstructural evolution of liquid-phase-sintered (LPS) SiC were studied. It was found that, for the β-SiC starting powder case, there was complete suppression of the β→α phase transformation, which otherwise goes to completion in Ar atmosphere. It was also found that the microstructures were equiaxed and that the coarsening was severely retarded, which was in contrast with the Ar-atmosphere case. Chemical analyses of the specimens sintered in N2 atmosphere revealed the presence of significant amounts of nitrogen, which was believed to reside mostly in the intergranular phase. It was argued that the presence of nitrogen in the LPS SiC helped stabilize the β-SiC phase, thereby preventing the β→α phase transformation and the attendant formation of elongated grains. To investigate the coarsening retardation, internal friction measurements were performed on LPS SiC specimens sintered in either Ar or N2 atmosphere. For specimens sintered in N2 atmosphere, a remarkable shift of the grain-boundary sliding relaxation peak toward higher temperatures and very high activation energy values were observed, possibly due to the incorporation of nitrogen into the structure of the intergranular liquid phase. The highly refractory and viscous nature of the intergranular phase was deemed responsible for retarding the solution–reprecipitation coarsening in these materials. Parallel experiments with specimens sintered using α-SiC starting powders further reinforce these arguments. Thus, processing of LPS SiC in N2 atmosphere open the possibility of tailoring their microstructures for room-temperature mechanical properties and for making high-temperature materials that are highly resistant to coarsening and creep.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Waste can be considered a crisis across the world, especially in the Global South where landfills are collapsing and vector-borne illnesses are increasing. Due to the increase in the amount of waste plastic in the environment, different uses of recycled plastics are being investigated. One such use is roofing tiles. This has been put in place in Sri Lanka through the Waste for Life organization. Here, recycled polyethylene is filled with rice husk particles. Due to the hydrophilic nature of the rice husk, the strength of the polyethylene composites decreased with increasing rice husk filler. Since the roofing tiles do not need to support a large load, the loss in strength should not be too detrimental. However, the creep behavior was improved with 10% and 20% filler. This is important in that the temperature on the roof can reach high temperatures.  相似文献

Sewage sludge was used as precursor to develop a potential inexpensive adsorbent by both simple drying and pyrolysis. The resulting materials were evaluated as adsorbents for the removal of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from aqueous solution. The dried biosolids showed a BET surface area lower than 3 m2/g, which yield a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.73 mmol 4-CP/g at pH 5.0 and 15 °C. The carbonization of biosolids under relatively mild conditions allowed obtaining materials with BET surface area up to 45 m2/g, which led to a significant increase of the maximum adsorption capacity (1.36 mmol 4-CP/g). The high ash content of the starting material (23%, d.b.) limits the development of porosity on a total dry-weight basis. Adsorption data were well fitted to the Redlich–Peterson isotherm equation whereas the most commonly used Langmuir and Freundlich equations were less satisfactory probably because of the occurrence of summative adsorption phenomenon. A thermodynamic study of the adsorption showed the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the process. Thus, simple drying and carbonization provide two ways of valorization of sewage sludge through its conversion into inexpensive low-rank adsorbents potentially useful for the removal of some hazardous water pollutants, like chlorophenols and related compounds.  相似文献

A study was carried out to increase the CLA contents in ewes’ milk fat under field conditions by dietary means and to investigate the extent of the changes and consequences for milk processing and cheese quality. During a 3-mon period, ewes’ bulk milk samples were collected every week from two different herds. For the first 4 wk the ewes were fed a conventional diet. Then the following 6 wk a supplement enriched in α-linolenate (whole linseed) was incorporated into the ovine diet. Finally, in the last 3 wk the feeding was the same as in the first 4 wk. The FA profile in milk fat was monitored by GC, and the distribution of CLA isomers was thoroughly tested by combining GC-MS of 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives (DMOX) with silver ion-HPLC (Ag+-HPLC) of FAME. Reconstructed mass spectral profiles of CLA characteristic ions from DMOX were used to identify positional isomers, and Ag+-HPLC was used to quantify them. An increase in total CLA in milk fat was observed, and total CLA remained elevated during the weeks of enriched α-linolenate feeding. In our experimental conditions there was a linear relationship between trans-vaccenic acid (trans-11-octadecenoic acid; trans-11 18∶1) and 9-cis, 11-trans CLA in ewes’ milk fat. Concerning the CLA isomer profile, increases in the 11,13- and 12,14–18∶2 positional isomers were considerable when linseed was included in the diet. Organoleptic characteristics of cheeses made with CLA-enriched milk did not substantially differ from those made with nonsupplemented ewes’ milk. In the present study we investigated possible contamination by trace elements due to the oil slick caused by the shipwreck of the Prestige oil tanker, in two species of brown macroalgae (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus ceranoides) collected from the coastal area most severely affected by the spill (Galicia, NW Spain). The oil slick apparently did not cause significant increases in the concentrations of the trace elements studied, except vanadium. It appears that the magnitude of terrestrial inputs to coastal waters is sufficiently high to mask the inputs of trace elements from the fuel. The observed exception of V suggests that bioaccumulation of this element by the two species of Fucus may be used to indicate exposure to petrochemical products similar to the Prestige fuel. The findings of the study are another example of the importance of the existence of Environmental Specimen Banks for studies of this type.  相似文献

In the current paper, a new hybrid nanofluid based on graphene oxide sheets and silicon nanoparticles is proposed for thermal applications. GO sheets and Si nanoparticles with different mixture ratios are dispersed in distilled water. Dynamic viscosity is measured at temperatures within the range 20–50 °C and the values are compared to the results available in the literature. The results indicated that the viscosity increases with increasing the mixture ratio of graphene oxide. A new correlation for the dynamic viscosity based on the experimental findings is proposed. Finally, the criteria for the performance of new hybrid nanofluid for thermal applications are analyzed.  相似文献

In the present work a three-dimensional analysis is used to study the heat transfer characteristics of a double-tube helical heat exchangers using nanofluids under laminar flow conditions. CuO and TiO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 24 nm dispersed in water with volume concentrations of 0.5–3 vol.% are used as the working fluid. The mass flow rate of the nanofluid from the inner tube was kept and the mass flow rate of the water from the annulus was set at either half, full, or double the value. The variations of the nanofluids and water temperatures, heat transfer rates and heat transfer coefficients along inner and outer tubes are shown in the paper. Effects of nanoparticles concentration level and of the Dean number on the heat transfer rates and heat transfer coefficients are presented. The results show that for 2% CuO nanoparticles in water and same mass flow rate in inner tube and annulus, the heat transfer rate of the nanofluid was approximately 14% greater than of pure water and the heat transfer rate of water from annulus than through the inner tube flowing nanofluids was approximately 19% greater than for the case which through the inner and outer tubes flow water. The results also show that the convective heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluids and water increased with increasing of the mass flow rate and with the Dean number. The results have been validated by comparison of simulations with the data computed by empirical equations.  相似文献

A general model is proposed to optimize the shading interaction between an awning and an external wall that project shadows on the facade of a construction. The original method was presented by the authors in Renewable Energy 28 (2003): 111, for a particular shading proposal. They emphasize the advantage of a one-dimensional approach to solve the problem of this interaction, analyzing the shadows projected by these elements from a side view. The generalized method, presented in this paper, is useful for architects to design shelter projects with more alternatives in the use of such shading devices. The general model also permits study and evaluation of any strategy chosen by the builder to shadow a facade, with an emphasis on windowpane shading, through graphical outputs of the solar performance.  相似文献
