Iodine speciation studies on Bunsen reaction of S–I cycle using spectroscopic techniques

Bunsen reaction is an important step of sulfur–iodine cycle for hydrogen production from thermochemical splitting of water. Polyiodide species generated during the separation process need to be identified for complete understanding of the mechanism involved. Speciation of these polyiodide species formed during Bunsen reaction can lead to better understanding of kinetics of the process. HIx species formed have been analyzed using UV–visible and Raman spectroscopic techniques. Peak corresponding to HI₃ species have been ascertained and their conversion to higher HI₅, HI₇ …… species has been observed.

Amyloid-β Inspired Short Peptide Amphiphile Facilitates Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles as Potential Antibacterial Agents

An amyloid-β inspired biocompatible short peptide amphiphile (sPA) molecule was used for controlled and targeted delivery of bioactive silver nanoparticles via transforming sPA nanostructures. Such sPA-AgNPs hybrid structures can be further used to develop antibacterial materials to combat emerging bacterial resistance. Due to the excellent antibacterial activity of silver, the growth of clinically relevant bacteria was inhibited in the presence of AgNPs-sPA hybrids. Bacterial tests demonstrated that the high biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity of the designed sPA allow it to work as a model drug delivery agent. It therefore shows great potential in locally addressing bacterial infections. The results of our study suggest that these nanodevices have the potential to trap and then engage in the facile delivery of their chemical payload at the target site, thereby working as potential delivery materials. This system has potential therapeutic value for the treatment of microbiota triggered progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Identification of Natural Products as Potential Pharmacological Chaperones for Protein Misfolding Diseases

Defective protein folding and accumulation of misfolded proteins is associated with neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, secretory, and metabolic disorders. Efforts are being made to identify small-molecule modulators or structural-correctors for conformationally destabilized proteins implicated in various protein aggregation diseases. Using a metastable-reporter-based primary screen, we evaluated pharmacological chaperone activity of a diverse class of natural products. We found that a flavonoid glycoside ( C-10 , chrysoeriol-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) stabilizes metastable proteins, prevents its aggregation, and remodels the oligomers into protease-sensitive species. Data was corroborated with additional secondary screen with disease-specific pathogenic protein. In vitro and cell-based experiments showed that C-10 inhibits α-synuclein aggregation which is implicated in synucleinopathies-related neurodegeneration. C-10 interferes in its structural transition into β-sheeted fibrils and mitigates α-synuclein aggregation-associated cytotoxic effects. Computational modeling suggests that C-10 binds to unique sites in α-synuclein which may interfere in its aggregation amplification. These findings open an avenue for comprehensive SAR development for flavonoid glycosides as pharmacological chaperones for metastable and aggregation-prone proteins implicated in protein conformational diseases.

Contrast enhancement of MRI images using morphological transforms and PSO

Medical imaging plays a crucial role in correct extraction of the significant information for monitoring the patient’s health and providing the quality treatment. A deluge of medical images requires initial interpretation for the presence of any abnormality, however, the correct diagnosis requires the images to be of good quality. To cope with the problem of poor contrast in medical images, this paper presents a method based on morphological transforms to improve the quality of the images. The proposed method incorporates Particle Swarm Optimization to find an optimum value of a parameter which controls the enhancement of the resulting image. The proposed algorithm is executed on a set of MRI images for testing its efficacy. The experimental results are compared in terms of both qualitative and quantitative parameters. The mean opinion score is obtained with the help of experts, which clearly shows the better performance of the proposed method. Furthermore, the parameters like Contrast Improvement Ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, peak signal-to-noise ratio, PL, and Structural Similarity Index are evident of better performance of proposed method when compared with the state-of-the-art methods and few recent methods. The comparison shows that the performance of the proposed method based on morphological transforms incorporating Particle Swarm Optimization is better not only visually but also in terms of other evaluation parameters.
