Theory of He trapping, diffusion, and clustering in UO2

We have performed ab initio total energy calculations to investigate the behavior of helium and its diffusion properties in uranium dioxide (UO₂). Our investigations are based on the density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The trapping behavior of He in UO₂ has been modeled with a supercell containing 96-atoms as well as uranium and oxygen vacancy trapping sites. The calculated incorporation energies show that for He a uranium vacancy is more stable than an oxygen vacancy or an octahedral interstitial site (OIS). Interstitial site hopping is found to be the rate-determining mechanism of the He diffusion process and the corresponding migration energy is computed as 2.79 eV at 0 K (with the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) included), and as 2.09 eV by using the thermally expanded lattice parameter of UO₂ at 1200 K, which is relatively close to the experimental value of 2.0 eV. The lattice expansion coefficient of He-induced swelling of UO₂ is calculated as 9 × 10⁻². For two He atoms, we have found that they form a dumbbell configuration if they are close enough to each other, and that the lattice expansion induced by a dumbbell is larger than by two distant interstitial He atoms. The clustering tendency of He has been studied for small clusters of up to six He atoms. We find that He strongly tends to cluster in the vicinity of an OIS, and that the collective action of the He atoms is sufficient to spontaneously create additional point defects around the He cluster in the UO₂ lattice.     

Substrate-induced magnetic ordering and switching of iron porphyrin molecules

To realize molecular spintronic devices, it is important to externally control the magnetization of a molecular magnet. One class of materials particularly promising as building blocks for molecular electronic devices is the paramagnetic porphyrin molecule in contact with a metallic substrate. Here, we study the structural orientation and the magnetic coupling of in-situ-sublimated Fe porphyrin molecules on ferromagnetic Ni and Co films on Cu(100). Our studies involve X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments. In a combined experimental and computational study we demonstrate that owing to an indirect, superexchange interaction between Fe atoms in the molecules and atoms in the substrate (Co or Ni) the paramagnetic molecules can be made to order ferromagnetically. The Fe magnetic moment can be rotated along directions in plane as well as out of plane by a magnetization reversal of the substrate, thereby opening up an avenue for spin-dependent molecular electronics.     

Proteolytic cleavage of MHC class I by complement C1-esterases--an overlooked mechanism?

This paper reviews recent changes in morbidity and mortality of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infants with congenital heart disease. Mortality since the late 1970s has declined substantially, from approximately 37% to 3%. Although the frequency of admission to intensive care units has declined from approximately 60% to 30%, the frequency for mechanical ventilatory support has not changed significantly. Because mortality dropped prior to the widespread use of ribavirin, it is difficult to ascribe the improvement to this therapy. In infants with congenital heart disease (CHD), nosocomial infection remains a significant problem, accounting for approximately 33% of the RSV cases. Some authors report significant reductions in hospital-acquired RSV by use of gloves and gowns for contacts with infectious cases. Efforts at primary prevention have encountered problems with development of an RSV vaccine. Preliminary data from studies of passive immunization using immune globulins with high RSV antibody titers suggest that this therapy may reduce the severity of RSV infection in infants with serious heart disease.     

Parathyroid hormone-related protein in patients with primary breast cancer and eucalcemia

Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is a causative factor of humoral hypercalcemia in breast cancer and other malignancies. We studied circulating PTHrP levels with three different immunoassays directed against different parts of the PTHrP molecule in 48 patients with breast cancer and eucalcemia. The methods used were: (a) a RIA with antibodies directed toward the midregion (63-78); (b) an immunofluorometric assay with two antibodies against 1-34 and 38-67; and (c) an immunoradiometric assay with antibodies against 1-40 and 1-72. Although most patients had PTHrP levels indistinguishable from normal when measured by all three methods, four patients had increased serum levels in the IFMA. PTHrP was detected by immunohistochemistry in tumors from nearly all patients. One patient with elevated PTHrP in plasma measured by IFMA showed intense staining of tumor by immunohistochemistry; the tumor was histologically graded as III (severe) and was the largest of all tumors in this patient group. The IFMA can identify increased serum PTHrP in some patients with breast cancer who are not hypercalcemic. This assay may be especially useful in screening patients for this tumor during a relative early phase of the disease.     

Behaviour of Surface Defects in Wire Rod Rolling

Defects are often present in rolled products, such as wire rod. The market demand for wire rod without any defects has increased. In the final wire rod products, defects originating from steel making, casting, pre‐rolling of billets and during wire rod rolling can appear. In this work, artificial V‐shaped longitudinal surface cracks have been analysed experimentally and by means of FEM. The results indicate that the experiments and FEM calculations show the same tendency except in two cases, where instability due to fairly “round” false round bars disturbed the experiment. FE studies in combination with practical experiments are necessary in order to understand the behaviour of the material flows in the groove and to explain whether the crack will open up as a V‐shape or if it will be closed as an I‐shape.     

Induced hypothermia in critical respiratory failure after lung transplantation

A practical approach to detect and identify ceftazidime-hydrolyzing extended-spectrum mutants of OXA-10 beta-lactamase is presented. Large numbers of bacteria were screened by colony hybridization, a 720-bp part of blaOXA was amplified by PCR from the hybridization-positive isolates, and the products were digested by PvuII and HaeIII.     

Hormonal regulation of the estrogen receptor in primary cultures of hepatocytes from female rats

Estrogen treatment affects the hepatic synthesis and/or secretion of several proteins involved in clinically important pathological processes such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and thrombosis. The endocrine regulation of the estrogen receptor (ER) concentration in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes was studied. Human growth hormone (hGH) and dexamethasone (DEX) in combination increased ER concentration 6-fold and ER mRNA levels 2.5-fold. These effects were not significantly different from those observed after treatment with the purely somatogenic bovine growth hormone (GH) in combination with DEX. Treatment with the lactogen ovine prolactin in the presence or absence of DEX did not significantly affect ER or ER mRNA concentrations. Triiodothyronine treatment at the most effective concentration (50 nM) increased ER and ER mRNA levels twofold. Medium supplementation with estradiol (0.1 nM) throughout the experiment did not affect the response to treatment with hGH and DEX. Treatment with high concentrations of ethinylestradiol in combination with hGH and DEX, however, increased the ER level twice as much as hGH and DEX without addition of estradiol or ethinylestradiol, whereas the ER mRNA concentration was the same in both the GH+DEX group and GH+ DEX+ (estradiol or ethinylestradiol) groups. These data indicate the importance of GH in combination with glucocorticoids for the maintenance of ER concentrations in the rat liver. Thyroid hormones may be of some, although minor importance, whereas the data suggest that prolactin is not directly involved in hepatic ER regulation.     

Antifeedants against <Emphasis Type="Italic">Hylobius abietis</Emphasis> Pine Weevils: An Active Compound In Extract of Bark of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Tilia cordata</Emphasis> Linden

Linden (Tilia cordata) bark was shown to contain an antifeedant effective against the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis. Soxhlet extraction of inner and outer bark resulted in an extract that showed antifeedant activity in a microfeeding assay. The extract was fractionated by chromatography on silica gel using gradient elution with solvents of increasing polarity. The content of the fractions obtained was monitored by thin layer- and gas chromatography. Fractions of similar chemical composition were merged. Two of the 17 fractions showed antifeedant activity in the microfeeding assay. Nonanoic acid was identified in both of these fractions. Subsequent testing in the microfeeding assay showed that nonanoic acid possessed strong antifeedant activity against H. abietis adults.
