An efficient method for preparation of semiconductor quantum rod films for robust lasing in a cylindrical microcavity is reported. A capillary tube, serving as the laser cavity, is filled with a solution of nanocrystals and irradiated with a series of intense nanosecond laser pulses to produce a nanocrystal film on the capillary surface. The films exhibit intense room‐temperature lasing in whispering‐gallery modes that develop at the film–capillary interface as corroborated from the spacing detected for the lasing modes. Good lasing stability is observed at moderate pump powers. The method was applied successfully to several quantum‐rod samples of various sizes. 相似文献

We conducted a content analysis of news articles (N = 540) to examine whether news coverage of media violence accurately reflects scientific knowledge about exposure to media violence and its effects on viewer aggression. The analysis revealed that over the past 30 years, news articles generally suggested that a link between media violence and aggression exists. However, the tone shifted sharply back toward a neutral conclusion since 2000. This shift may be attributable to the type of medium discussed (e.g., television vs. video games), the number of unaffiliated sources that are cited in the news article, and the sex of the journalist. Implications for how this news coverage may influence news readers are discussed. 相似文献

Functional graphene optical sensors are now viable due to the recent developments in hand‐held Raman spectroscopy and the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene films. Herein, the strain in graphene/poly (methyl methacrylate) sensor coatings is followed using Raman band shifts. The performance of an “ideal” mechanically‐exfoliated single crystal graphene flake is compared to a scalable CVD graphene film. The dry‐transferred mechanically exfoliated sample has no residual stresses, whereas the CVD sample is in compression following the solvent evaporation during its transfer. The behavior of the sensors under cyclic deformation shows an initial breakdown of the graphene‐polymer interface with the interface then stabilizing after several cycles. The Raman 2D band shift rates per unit strain of the exfoliated graphene are ≈35% higher than CVD graphene making the former more strain sensitive. However, for practical wide‐area applications, CVD graphene coatings are still viable candidates as a Raman system can be used to read the strain in any 5 μm diameter spot in the coating to an absolute accuracy of ≈0.01% strain and resolution of ≈27 microstrains (μs), which compares favorably to commercial photoelastic systems. 相似文献

The 2-D orthogonal wavelet transform decomposes images into both spatial and spectrally local coefficients. The transformed coefficients were coded hierarchically and individually quantized in accordance with the local estimated noise sensitivity of the human visual system (HVS). The algorithm can be mapped easily onto VLSI. For the Miss America and Lena monochrome images, the technique gave high to acceptable quality reconstruction at compression ratios of 0.3-0.2 and 0.64-0.43 bits per pixel (bpp), respectively. 相似文献

Silicon underpins microelectronics but lacks the photonic capability needed for next‐generation systems and currently relies on a highly undesirable hybridization of separate discrete devices using direct band gap semiconductors. Rare‐earth (RE) implantation is a promising approach to bestow photonic capability to silicon but is limited to internal RE transition wavelengths. Reported here is the first observation of direct optical transitions from the silicon band edge to internal f‐levels of implanted REs (Ce, Eu, and Yb); this overturns previously held assumptions about the alignment of RE levels to the silicon band gap. The photoluminescence lines are massively redshifted to several technologically useful wavelengths and modeling of their splitting indicates that they must originate from the REs. Eu‐implanted silicon devices display a greatly enhanced electroluminescence efficiency of 8%. Also observed is the first crystal field splitting in Ce luminescence. Mid‐IR silicon photodetectors with specific detectivities comparable to existing state‐of‐the‐art mid‐IR detectors are demonstrated. 相似文献

Titania pastes were fired at 450 °C in oxygen to give white titania that was used to prepare dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Titania fired at lower temperature and/or under inert atmosphere have brown stripes and cells made from these stripes had no measurable efficiency. When the titania paste was screen printed and then heated and simultaneously irradiated with UV light, white stripes were obtained. Improved efficiency was noted for PV cells made from pastes heated at lower temperature under irradiation vs. cells made from low-temperature heated paste but without irradiation. UV irradiation appears to facilitate clean oxidation of residual organic materials in the titania precursor pastes. The best cells in our study made with our titania paste treated at 450 °C in oxygen had the following characteristics: efficiency=3.45%; Voc=630 mV; Jsc=8.5 mA/cm2; and a fill factor=0.64. 相似文献

Allelochemicals are known to serve important roles at all steps in the host-searching sequence of parasitoids. We discuss the various roles of these allelochemics and the type of information needed to develop their use in pest control, which to date has been very limited. Rapid advancements are being made with respect to airborne chemicals and longer-range foraging behavior. Moreover, recent discoveries have shown that genetic diversity in parasitoid populations and phenotypic plasticity of individuals, together with their physiological state, often result in substantial variations in the response to chemical cues. Successful application of semiochemical-parasitoid systems will require management of these intrinsic parasitoid variables as well as management of the foraging environment. We illustrate emerging technology for such an application. For the immediate future, the development of this technology will allow us to: (1) define the genetic and phenotypic foraging profiles important to consistent and efficient parasitoid foraging, and (2) establish the proper propagation and release procedures and monitoring bioassays necessary to ensure appropriate behavioral and physiological qualities of released organisms. For the long term, we envision technology for comprehensively manipulating the pest/crop environment in ways that would provide foraging stimuli and other needs important to retention and efficiency of parasitoids. 相似文献

Human mucus proteinase inhibitor (MPI) consists of 107 aminoacids arranged in two domains showing high homology to eachother. This protein is an inhibitor of different serine proteinasesincluding trypsin, chymotrypsin, leukocyte elastase and cathepsinG. On the basis of sequence comparisons it has been suggestedthat the first domain inhibits trypsin, whereas the second onewas thought to be active against chymotrypsin and elastase.To prove the location of the different inhibitory activitiesgene fragments for both domains have been cloned separatelyand expressed in Escherichia coli. Inhibition assays with theisolated recombinant domains showed that the second domain isactive against chymotrypsin, neutrophil elastase and trypsin,whereas for the first domain only a weak activity against trypsincould be detected. Various calibration strategies for the quantitation of the phenylpropane estragole by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were developed and compared. For application in stable isotope dilution assays, two deuterium labelled estragole isotopologues were synthesized. Of these, [3′,3′-2H2]estragole was prepared by Wittig reaction of 4-methoxy-phenylacetaldehyde with [2H3]methyl-triphenyl-phosphonium bromide, whereas [1″,1″,1″-2H3]estragole was obtained by demethylation of estragole and deuteromethylation of the resulting 4-allylphenole.Besides estragole isotopologues, 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene and 4-propylanisole were also tested as internal standards (I.S.) for the determination of estragole in fennel tea.[1″,1″,1″-2H3]Estragole, 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene, and 4-propylanisole revealed linear calibration functions and, therefore, were suitable for estragole quantitation. In contrast to this, [3′,3′-2H2]estragole could only be applied as I.S. if it was added to the extracts in stoichiometric deficiency compared to unlabelled estragole. Moreover, due to its different chemical and physical properties, 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene showed a recovery as low as 77%, whereas the other I.S. revealed recovery rates close to 100%. Considering the “real” values of estragole in fennel tea, the choice of the I.S. obviously is less important than the way of preparing the tea. In contrast to the common method for tea preparation, squeezing of the teabags increased the estragole content significantly by 50%. 相似文献

We consider optimal design of cylindrical shells under axial compression. The main motivation is the comprehensive study of Weaver and Ashby [Material limits for shape efficiency. Progress in Materials Science 1997;41:61–128] concerning tubes designed to resist local buckling, global buckling and yield. In this paper we add another mode to this set of possible failure mechanisms, namely axial crushing. This failure-mode turns out to be dominate for many materials in several relevant load-cases. In many cases, taking this mode into account changes the optimal design substantially. By analyzing the formulae for the failure-modes we obtain piecewise defined functions describing the optimal cross-section and the minimum mass of the tube. Combined with advanced computer aided material selection tools like the Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES), these functions enable us to identify the best possible materials which give the lightest possible tubes. 相似文献
