Confined goats spend a substantial part of the day feeding. A poorly designed feeding place increases the risk of feeding in nonphysiological body postures, and even injury. Scientifically validated information on suitable dimensions of feeding places for loose-housed goats is almost absent from the literature. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to determine feeding place dimensions that would allow goats to feed in a species-appropriate, relaxed body posture. A total of 27 goats with a height at the withers of 62 to 80 cm were included in the study. Goats were tested individually in an experimental feeding stall that allowed the height difference between the feed table, the standing area of the forelegs, and a feeding area step (difference in height between forelegs and hind legs) to be varied. The goats accessed the feed table via a palisade feeding barrier. The feed table was equipped with recesses at varying distances to the feeding barrier (5–55 cm in 5-cm steps) at angles of 30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, or 150° (feeding angle), which were filled with the goats' preferred food. In 18 trials, balanced for order across animals, each animal underwent all possible combinations of feeding area step (3 levels: 0, 10, and 20 cm) and of difference in height between feed table and standing area of forelegs (6 levels: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 cm). The minimum and maximum reach at which the animals could reach feed on the table with a relaxed body posture was determined for each combination. Statistical analysis was performed using mixed-effects models. The animals were able to feed with a relaxed posture when the feed table was at least 10 cm higher than the standing height of the goats' forelegs. Larger goats achieved smaller minimum reaches and minimum reach increased if the goats' head and neck were angled. Maximum reach increased with increasing height at withers and height of the feed table. The presence of a feeding area step had no influence on minimum and maximum reach. Based on these results, the goats' feeding place can be designed to ensure that the animals are able to reach all of the feed in the manger or on the feed table with a relaxed posture, thus avoiding injuries and nonphysiological stress on joints and hooves. A feeding area step up to a maximum of 20 cm need not be taken into account in terms of feeding reach. Seven target polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs; IUPAC nos. 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, and 180) and the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its related metabolites (p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, and p,p'-DDD) were quantified in edible tissues from seven marine species (European hake, red mullet, blue whiting, Atlantic mackerel, blue and red shrimp, European flying squid, and Mediterranean mussel) from the Gulf of Naples in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy). PCBs 118, 138, and 153 were the dominant congeners in all the species examined. The concentrations of all PCBs (from not detectable to 15,427 ng g(-1) fat weight) exceeded those of all the DDTs (from not detectable to 1,769 ng g(-1) fat weight) and HCB (not detectable to 150.60 ng g(-1) fat weight) in the samples analyzed. The OCP concentrations were below the maximum residue limits established for fish and aquatic products by the Decreto Ministerale 13 May 2005 in all the samples analyzed; therefore the OCPs in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea species are unlikely to be a significant health hazard. Conversely, the mean concentrations of PCBs exceeded (greatly in some cases) the current limits (200 ng(-1) fat weight) set by the European Union for terrestrial foods. Several lines of evidence point to olive oil and the olive oil-centered Mediterranean diet as conducive to longevity. The evidence stems from ecological, as well as analytic epidemiological studies assessing olive oil, monounsaturated lipids or the Mediterranean dietary pattern in relation to the incidence of, or mortality from, major common diseases, or overall mortality. Mechanistic considerations are addressed by biochemical studies, whereas randomized clinical trials provide further support to the evidence generated from observational investigations. Genetic instability causes very rapid asymmetrical loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at the cyh2 locus and loss of killer K2 phenotype in some wine yeasts under the usual laboratory propagation conditions or after long freeze-storage. The direction of this asymmetrical evolution in heterozygous cyh2(R)/CYH2(S) hybrids is determined by the mechanism of asymmetrical LOH. However, the speed of the process is affected by the differences in cell viability between the new homozygous yeasts and the original heterozygous hybrid cells. The concomitant loss of ScV-M2 virus in the LOH process may increase cell viability of cyh2(R)/cyh2(R) yeasts and so favour asymmetrical evolution. The presence of active killer K2 toxin, however, abolishes the asymmetrical evolution of the hybrid populations. Chromatographic and spectroscopic methods used for the detection and quantification of triacylglycerol (TAG) species present in less common edible vegetable oils (almond, hazelnut, pumpkin seed, safflower, sesame, walnut, and wheatgerm oils) are reviewed. For these oils, as well as for thistle oil and high-oleic sunflower oil, for which no data exist on their TAG composition, both high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) chromatographic plus spectrometric techniques have also been performed. Triacylglycerol comparison of the data found in the literature is also presented. Five fatty acyl moieties (palmitoyl-, stearoyl-, oleoyl-, linoleoyl-, and linolenoyl-) are found to mainly contribute to the formation of TAG species of the aforementioned edible vegetable oils, whereas six more (palmitoleoyl-, arachidoyl-, gadoleoyl-, heptadecenoyl-, margaroyl-, and erucoyl-) are reported as minors. Only 19 to 33 TAG make up the mass of these oils. These TAG are also found in most common edible oils, thus indicating a “uniformity” in the minor and main TAG composition of edible vegetable oils. Trioleoyl-glycerol predominates in almond (13.3-48.6%), hazelnut (35.3-57.9%), and high oleic sunflower (44.2% and 52.9%) oils, trilinoleoyl-glycerol in safflower (40.1-49.7%), thistle (36.9% and 46.0%), walnut (25.9-38.1%), and wheatgerm (15.7-33.0%) oils. Assessment of antimicrobial activity of coffee brewed in three different ways from different origins

The antimicrobial effect against pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterecoccus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Salmonella choleraesius was determined in four types of coffee (Coffea arabica L. cv. Colombia, decaffeinated cv. Colombia, cv. Ethiopia and cv. Kenya). Coffee was seen to have significant activity against the growth of food spoilage bacteria. Among the Gram-positive bacteria, coffee was strongly active against S. aureus, moderately active against L. monocytogenes and had a slightly inhibitory effect against E. faecalis. However, coffee samples were found to be less active against Gram-negative bacteria. The results show that espresso Colombia coffee has better antimicrobial activity than filter and Italian coffee with significant differences (p?<?0.05). Taking into account the origin, there were significant differences (p?<?0.05) between Kenya and decaffeinated Colombia, on the one hand, and Ethiopia and Colombia coffee, on the other, the two last showing the highest antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial activity of the coffee from different origins studied in this paper increased with concentration. Typical coffee compounds were also analysed, and only caffeic and chlorogenic acids showed any inhibitory effect against the growth of all the analysed bacteria. The antibacterial properties of coffee means that it has a promising potential as natural food ingredient to extend the shelf life of foods such as cake, cookies or biscuits, coffee flavoured with shakes, yoghurt. 相似文献
