Life Cycle Assessment has been used to compare different scenarios involving wastewater reuse, with special focus on toxicity-related impact categories. The study is based on bench-scale experiments applying ozone and ozone in combination with hydrogen peroxide to a wastewater effluent from a Spanish sewage treatment plant. Two alternative characterisation models have been used to account for toxicity of chemical substances, namely USES-LCA and EDIP97. Four alternative scenarios have been assessed: wastewater discharge plus desalination supply, wastewater reuse without tertiary treatment, wastewater reuse after applying a tertiary treatment consisting on ozonation, and wastewater reuse after applying ozonation in combination with hydrogen peroxide. The results highlight the importance of including wastewater pollutants in LCA of wastewater systems assessing toxicity, since the contribution of wastewater pollutants to the overall toxicity scores in this case study can be above 90%. Key pollutants here are not only heavy metals and other priority pollutants, but also non-regulated pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Wastewater reuse after applying any of the tertiary treatments considered appears as the best choice from an ecotoxicity perspective. As for human toxicity, differences between scenarios are smaller, and taking into account the experimental and modelling uncertainty, the benefits of tertiary treatment are not so clear. From a global warming potential perspective, tertiary treatments involve a potential 85% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when compared with desalination.  相似文献

Studies linking exposure to low levels of radiofrequencies with adverse health effects, notwithstanding their present apparent inconsistency, have contributed to a steady improvement in the quality of evaluating that exposure. In complex electromagnetic environments, with a multitude of emissions of different frequencies acting simultaneously, knowledge of the spectral content is fundamental to evaluating human exposure to non-ionizing radiation. In the present work, we quantify the most significant spectral components in the frequency band 0.5-2200 MHz in an urban area. The measurements were made with a spectrum analyzer and monopole, biconical, and log-periodic antennas. Power density levels were calculated separately for the medium wave, short wave, and frequency modulation radio broadcasting bands, and for the television and GSM, DCS, and UMTS mobile telephony bands. The measured levels were compared with the ICNIRP reference levels for exposure to multiple frequency sources for thermal effects and electrical stimulation. The results showed the criterion limiting exposure on the basis of preventing electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves and muscles to be stricter (exposure quotient 24.7 10− 4) than that based on thermal considerations (exposure quotient 0.16 10− 4). The bands that contribute most to the latter are short wave, with 46.2%, and mobile telephony with 32.6% of the total exposure.In a complex electromagnetic environment, knowledge of the radiofrequency spectrum is essential in order to quantify the contribution of each type of emission to the public's exposure. It is also necessary to evaluate the electrical effects as well as the thermal effects because the criterion to limit exposure on the basis of the effect of the electrical stimulation of tissues is stricter than that based on thermal effects.  相似文献

Concentrations and stable isotope ratios of lead (Pb) from lake sediments were used to quantify temporal patterns of anthropogenic Pb pollution in the Clyde River region of Baffin Island, Arctic Canada. Surface sediments from eight lakes on eastern Baffin Island and one from northern-most Greenland, spanning a gradient of 20° latitude, showed great variability with respect to Pb concentration and stable isotopic Pb ratios, with little apparent latitudinal trend. To constrain the temporal evolution of regional Pb pollution, a well-dated core from one of the sites, Lake CF8 on east-central Baffin Island, was analyzed geochemically at high stratigraphic resolution. A pronounced decrease in the 206Pb/207Pb ratio occurs in sediments deposited between 1923 and the mid-1970s, likely reflecting alkyl-Pb additives derived from the combustion of fossil fuels at a global scale. A two-component mixing model indicates that 17-26% of the Pb in the labile fraction of sediments deposited in Lake CF8 between 2001 and 2005 is from anthropogenic input. A Pb-Pb co-isotopic plot (206Pb/207Pb vs.208Pb/206Pb ratios) of the Lake CF8 time series data indicates multiple possible sources of industrial Pb pollution. Despite widespread reductions in industrial Pb emissions since the 1970s, there is no evidence for attendant reductions of pollution Pb at Lake CF8. Enhanced scavenging from increased primary production as well as changing precipitation rates as climate warms may represent important factors that modulate Pb deposition to Lake CF8, and Arctic lakes elsewhere.  相似文献

The utility for carbon‐carbon bond formation of a multienzyme system composed of recombinant dihydroxyacetone kinase (DHAK) from Citrobacter freundii, the fructose bisphosphate aldolase from rabbit muscle (RAMA) and acetate kinase (AK) for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) regeneration has been studied. Several aldehydes with great structural diversity, including three α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes, have been analysed as acceptor substrates. It was found that α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes bearing an electron‐withdrawing group in the β position to the double bond with a trans configuration are good acceptors for RAMA in this multienzyme system. The aldol reaction proceeds with excellent D ‐threo enantioselectivity and the aldol adduct is obtained in good overall yield. The L ‐threo and D ‐erythro enantiomers are also accessible from rhamnulose 1‐phosphate aldolase (Rha‐1PA) and fuculose 1‐phosphate aldolase (Fuc‐1PA) catalysed reactions, respectively.  相似文献

The performance of several oxidation processes to remove organic pollutants from sourwater was investigated. Sourwater is a specific stream of petroleum refineries, which contains slowly biodegradable compounds and toxic substances that impair the industrial biological wastewater treatment system. Preliminary experiments were conducted, using the following processes: H2O2, H2O2/UV, UV, photocatalysis, ozonation, Fenton and photo-Fenton. All processes, except Fenton and photo-Fenton, did not lead to satisfactory results, reducing at most 35% of the sourwater dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Thus, further experiments were performed with these two techniques to evaluate process conditions and organic matter removal kinetics. Batch experiments revealed that the Fenton reaction is very fast and reaches, in a few minutes, an ultimate DOC removal of 13-27%, due to the formation of iron complexes. Radiation for an additional period of 60 min can increase DOC removal up to 87%. Experiments were also conducted in a continuous mode, operating one 0.4L Fenton stirred reactor and one 1.6L photo-Fenton reactor in series. DOC removals above 75% were reached, when the reaction system was operated with hydraulic retention times (HRT) higher than 85 min. An empirical mathematical model was proposed to represent the DOC removal kinetics, allowing predicting process performance quite satisfactorily.  相似文献

This paper presents the design of a fifth-order low-pass elliptic filter that employs a parallel connection of two all-pass sections to satisfy specifications commonly used in video frequency applications. Operating with a sampling frequency of 16 MHz, the IC prototype was implemented in a standard double-poly CMOS 0.8 μm process. The experimental verification showed a passband frequency deviation smaller than 0.08 dB up to the passband edge frequency of 3.4 MHz, and an output noise power of 0.97 ${\mu {\rm V}_{\rm RMS}}/{\sqrt {Hz}}This paper presents the design of a fifth-order low-pass elliptic filter that employs a parallel connection of two all-pass sections to satisfy specifications commonly used in video frequency applications. The filter structure enables multiple fault detection and suits modern automated testing configurations to allow accurate estimation of the actually implemented transfer function parameters, an issue of increasing importance in VLSI circuit design. The relative area required for testing the fifth-order filter is only 8% of the total filter area, and decreases as the filter order increases. Jorge Morales Ca?ive was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, in 1963. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the Technical University of San Petersburg, Russia, in 1986 and 1988, respectively, and the D.Sc. degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1991, all in electrical engineering. From 1988 to 1994, he worked at CEADEN, in Havana, Cuba, on the development of nuclear equipments. From 1994 to 1997, he worked at INOR, in Havana, Cuba, on the research and development of acquisition systems and image processing for nuclear medicine. His research interests are in the areas of analog and digital signal processing. Antonio Petraglia (S’89-M’91-SM’99) received the Engineer and M.Sc. degrees from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, in 1977 and 1982, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), in 1991, all in electrical engineering. In 1979, he joined the Faculty of UFRJ as an Associate Professor of electrical engineering, where he served as a Co-Chair in the Department of Electronic Engineering from 1982 to 1984. During the second semester of 1991, he was a post-Doctoral researcher with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSB. Since 1992 he has been on the faculty of the Program for Post-Graduate Engineering at UFRJ, where in 1997 he established the Laboratory for the Processing of Analog and Digital Signals. From March 2001 through March 2002 he was a Visiting Scholar with the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been involved in teaching and research activities in the areas of analog and digital signal processing, and in mixed analog-digital integrated circuit design. He is a distinguished member of the Brazilian Millenium Group in Nanoelectronics and Microelectronics in 2006-2008. Dr. Petraglia served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing in 2002–2003 Mariane Rembold Petraglia (M’97) received the B.Sc. degree in electronic engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1985, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1988 and 1991, respectively. From 1992 to 1993, she was with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since 1993, she has been with the Department of Electronic Engineering and with the Program of Electrical Engineering, COPPE, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where she is presently an Associate Professor. From March 2001 to February 2002, she was a Visiting Researcher with the Adaptive Systems Laboratory, at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research interests are in adaptive signal processing, multirate systems, and image processing. Dr. Petraglia is a member of Tau Beta Pi, and a distinguished member of the Brazilian Millenium Group in Nanoelectronics and Microelectronics in 2006–2008. Hormones are important bioactive compounds in blood and tissue that vary in concentration in response to stress and certain disease states. Establishing the changes in physiological hormone concentrations over time can lead to more effective diagnoses and perhaps a better understanding of the evolution of stress and disease. To monitor concentration over time, the sampling must be rapid and noninvasive; specimens such as saliva that require little effort to collect are preferred. However, more sensitive assay techniques are needed when compared to blood analysis since free hormone concentration in saliva is only a small fraction of the concentration in circulating blood. In this work, magnetic field-induced structures of paramagnetic particles are used as a solid substrate to demonstrate improved detection limits for a separation-free assay of cortisol. Once formed, the structures are subjected to a rotating magnetic field and this leads to two important features. First is the ability to utilize frequency and phase filtering (lock-in amplification) for the signal generated from surface-bound labeled species. Second is the improved mass transport of the antigen to the surface of the rotating structures. These two unique capabilities result in a quantifiable signal at a relatively low target antigen concentration. This method has been demonstrated with the detection of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled cortisol (FITC-cortisol) at a concentration of 300 pM.  相似文献

This short communication is a discussion of the paper entitled “A new heuristic approach for optimal reconfiguration in distribution systems” introduced a new approach for optimal reconfiguration of radial distribution systems. Besides, a load flow algorithm based on graph theory was presented in order to give precise branch currents, node voltages and system power losses. In the abstract and in the conclusion section of the above mentioned study, the author stated that the results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of several methods available in other published articles, and that the proposed technique represents an improved, more efficient method which can easily solve the distribution network reconfiguration problem compared with those other methods. However, this conclusion can not be deduced from the results given by the author because with the optimal radial configuration given for the test system used, the power losses obtained are higher than those obtained by some of the other methods.
