The authors are developing devices for semi-autonomous or autonomous locomotion in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In this paper, they illustrate the systematic approach to the problem of "effective" locomotion in the GI tract and the critical analysis of "inchworm" locomotion devices, based on extensor and clamper mechanisms. The fundamentals of locomotion and the practical problems encountered during the development and the testing (in vitro and in vivo) of these devices are discussed. A mini device capable of propelling itself in the colon and suitable to perform, at least, rectum-sigmoidoscopy (the tract where approximately 60% of all colon cancers are found) is presented. This paper introduces preliminary, but useful, concepts for understanding, modeling and improving the performance of virtually any existing and novel devices for endoscopy of the GI tract.  相似文献

Vibrational Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Visible spectroscopies coupled to thermogravimetry were used to characterise the gelatinous aggregates as well as the humin and humic fractions extracted from the aggregates. Spectroscopic analysis made it possible to identify the main classes of compounds present in the samples. The FTIR spectra of the aggregates showed the presence of carbohydrates, saturated aliphatic compounds, aminic, esteric, amidic (proteins) and ketonic compounds, organic and inorganic phosphates, silica and, in some cases, carbonates. The FTIR spectra of humin and humic acids showed functional groups similar to those found in the spectra of the aggregates. The high aliphatic character and the absence of aromatic compounds observed in many aggregates sampled far from estuarine areas suggest the marine origin of mucilages. These results were also confirmed by the 270/407 nm (A2/A4) and 465/665 nm (E4/E6) absorbance ratio in humic acids.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of different types of visible mucilaginous aggregates were investigated monthly by underwater video cameras in the northern Adriatic (NA) from June 1999 to July 2002. Small aggregates (flocs, macroflocs and stringers) were observed in all seasons with higher values in autumn and winter. Larger aggregates (ribbons, cobwebs, clouds, and false bottoms) formed only during late-spring and summer, particularly in 2000 and 2002, when the seasonal thermohaline stratification was marked. In fact, the process of mucilage formation took place mainly in the upper water column, above the main pycnocline. The spatial distribution shows that higher concentrations of small aggregates occur in the more productive coastal waters. The larger aggregates form or accumulate mainly in coastal waters in the southern part of the NA and in the central part of the Po River delta-Rovinj transect, where a gyre greatly influences the aggregates distribution. The fronts between low salinity coastal waters and high salinity waters of southern origin play an important role for accumulation and aggregation of the mucilage during spring and summer. Most of the aggregates accumulate in correspondence with strong pycnoclines with differences in density anomaly of 2 kg m(-3) or higher. False bottoms formed in correspondence with strong haloclines (DeltaS congruent with 2), while cobwebs and ribbons also occurred when the halocline was less marked (DeltaS<0.5). Meteorological conditions greatly influenced the aggregate formation. Calm weather and weak winds favour aggregation processes, while strong north-easterly winds, causing intense mixing, result in the dispersion of the mucilaginous aggregates, as occurred during the Bora event in July 2000.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of batching parts and scheduling their operations in flexible manufacturing cells. We consider the case in which there is only one processor and no more than k parts may be present in the system at the same time. The objective is to minimize the total number of setups, given that each part requires a sequence of operations, and each operation requires a given tool. We prove that even for k=3 the problem is NP-hard and we develop a branch-and-price scheme for its solution. Moreover, we present an extensive computational experience. Finally, we analyze some special cases and related problems.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the appearance of mucilage in the Northern Adriatic Sea was related with the accumulation of dissolved organic compounds released by intensive enzymatic activities and not utilized as direct substrate for microbial growth. To do this enzymatic activities and dissolved organic and inorganic pools in periods characterized by the presence of mucilage and in the same seasons but in absence of mucilage were compared. Extracellular enzymatic activities (aminopeptidase, beta-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase), nutrient pool concentrations (total dissolved nitrogen, dissolved organic nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, dissolved organic phosphorus) and the biochemical composition of particulate and dissolved organic matter (in terms of proteins and carbohydrates) were determined on a monthly basis over a period of 3 years. Aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase activities displayed higher values in springs preceding the appearance of mucilage than in spring when no mucilage was observed. Beta-Glucosidase activity showed significantly higher values in summer periods characterized by the massive production of mucilage than in summers without mucilage events. The months preceding mucilage events were also characterized by an increase of the alkaline phosphatase to aminopeptidase activity ratio and by a significant accumulation of dissolved proteins. These findings, together with the significant increase of the DON/DOP ratio, suggest that mucilage formation is favoured by the deficiency of organic P. The present study provides compelling evidences that mucilage formation is favoured by the unbalance between organic matter mobilization by enzymatic activities and the accumulation of labile dissolved organic-N compounds.  相似文献

Effective and timely health monitoring of wind turbine gearboxes and generators is essential to reduce the costs of operations and maintenance activities, especially offshore. This paper presents a scalable and lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) framework using high-dimensional raw condition monitoring data for the automatic detection of multiple wind turbine electromechanical faults. The proposed approach leverages the potential of combining information from a variety of signals to learn features and to discriminate the types of fault and their severity. As a result of the CNN layers used to extract features from the signals, this architecture works in the time domain and can digest high-resolution multi-sensor data streams in real-time. To overcome the inherent black-box nature of AI models, this research proposes two interpretability techniques, multidimensional scaling and layer-wise relevance propagation, to analyse the proposed model's inner-working and identify the signal features relevant for fault classification. Experimental results show high performance and classification accuracies above 99.9% for all fault cases tested, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed fault-detection system.  相似文献

This paper will present a complete manufacturing process for obtaining pyroelectric thin film sensors composed of a blend of PVDF and PMMA polymers. These sensors comprise a stack of metallic (Ti/Pt) electrodes around an active pyroelectric layer and are able to detect a temperature variation through the pyroelectric effect. Deposition is achieved with solution using a spin-coating and hot plate drying method. Addition of PMMA is a technique for promoting the crystallization of PVDF in the β phase, with one of the PVDF polymer chain conformations producing a ferroelectric behaviour. Analysis of the role of the solvent evaporation rate has been carried out with FTIR and indicates that low temperature evaporation (below 70 °C) leads to the presence of β phase in the material. Polarization curve measurement also indicates the ferroelectric behaviour of deposited layers. Finally a thermal transient response indicates a pyroelectric coefficient of 20 μC m−2 K−1 which is close to the bulk material value (27 μC m−2 K−1).  相似文献

Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (alpha, beta, gamma), and chlorinated pesticides (DDTs) in cod-liver oil used as a dietary supplement were determined. Total PCB and DDT concentrations varied from 25 to 201 ng g(-1) lipid weight basis and from 25 to 133 ng g(-1) lipid weight basis, respectively. Hexachlorobenzene contributed very little to the overall contaminant burden of dietary supplement oils, whereas hexachlorocyclohexane isomers were below the instrumental detection limits in all samples. The daily intake of PCBs and DDTs derived by the consumption of cod-liver oil at manufacturer-recommended doses varied from 0.004 to 2.01 microg/day and from 0.004 to 1.24 microg/day, respectively. Relative to some dioxin-like PCB congeners (mono-ortho PCB 105, 118, and 156; non-ortho PCB 77, 126, and 169), the intakes calculated varied from less than 0.001 to 0.74 pg of toxic equivalency values (TEQ) per kg of body weight per day. These values, although below the range of 1 to 4 pg of TEQ per kg of body weight per day set by the World Health Organization, emphasize the need for strict and continuous monitoring of fish oil contamination to reduce, as much as possible, the risks to human health.  相似文献

Viruses are trailblazers in hijacking host systems for their own needs. Plant viruses have been shown to exploit alternative avenues of translocation within a host, including a challenging route through the xylem, to expand their niche and establish systemic spread, despite apparent host-imposed obstacles. Recent findings indicate that plant viruses from many families could successfully hack xylem cells in a broad range of plant hosts, including herbaceous and perennial woody plants. Similar to virus-related structures present in the phloem, virus particles and membrane-containing viral replication complexes are often observed in the xylem. Except for a few single-stranded DNA viruses in the family Geminiviridae and a negative-sense single-stranded RNA rhabdovirus, Lettuce necrotic yellows virus, the majority of the viruses that were detected in the xylem belong to the group of positive-sense RNA viruses. The diversity of the genome organization and virion morphology of those viruses indicates that xylem exploitation appears to be a widely adapted strategy for plant viruses. This review outlines the examples of the xylem-associated viruses and discusses factors that regulate virus inhabitation of the xylem as well as possible strategies of virus introduction into the xylem. In some cases, plant disease symptoms have been shown to be closely related to virus colonization of the xylem. Inhibiting viral xylem invasion could raise potential attractive approaches to manage virus diseases. Therefore, the identification of the host genes mediating virus interaction with the plant xylem tissue and understanding the underlying mechanisms call for more attention.  相似文献
