High-gain, high-power 1.3 μm compressive strained MQW opticalamplifier

A high-gain and high-saturation output power optical amplifier operating in the 1.3-μm wavelength region that was fabricated using a compressive-strained multiple-quantum-well active region is described. It is shown that optical gain as high as 27 dB and 3-dB saturation output power as high as 14 dBm were obtained simultaneously     

Effects of aging and HIF-1alpha deficiency on permeability of hippocampal vessels

We examined age-related changes in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) of neural cell-specific hypoxia inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) deficient mice, which showed hydrocephalus with neuronal cell loss, to investigate an effect of neural cell-specific HIF-1alpha deficiency or hydrocephalus on vascular function. Vascular permeability of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and binding of cationized ferritin (CF) particles to the endothelial cell luminal surface, as a marker of glycocalyx, were investigated. The thickness of CF-labeled glycocalyx was significantly decreased in the cortex in mutant mice compared with that of control mice, although it was not paralleled by increased vascular permeability. In addition, strong staining for HRP was seen around vessels located along the hippocampal fissure in 24-month-old mutant mice. The reaction product of HRP appeared in an increasing number of the endothelial cell abluminal vesicles and within the thickened basal lamina of arterioles in the hippocampus, showing increased vascular permeability. There were no leaky vessels in 10-week-old mutant mice or 10-week-old and 24-month-old control mice. These findings suggest the necessity of two factors, aging and hydrocephalus, for BBB dysfunction in HIF-1alpha deficient mice.     

Fatty Acid Conjugates of Water‐Soluble (±)‐trans‐Selenolane‐3,4‐diol: Effects of Alkyl Chain Length on the Antioxidant Capacity

Fatty acid monoesters of the title compound (DHS^red), of variable carbon chain length (propionate, laurate, myristate, palmitate, and stearate), were synthesized, and their antioxidant capacities were evaluated by means of a lipid peroxidation assay with lecithin/cholesterol liposomes. The selenides with long alkyl chains exhibited significant antioxidant activity (IC₅₀=9–34 μM ) against accumulation of lipid hydroperoxide. Incorporation of the myristate into the liposome was ≈50 % by EPMA analysis. Intermediacy of the selenoxide was examined by NMR. In addition, enhancement of interfacial redox catalytic activity was observed for the myristate, but not for PhSeSePh and edaravone, in a PhCl/H₂O biphasic peroxidation assay. These results suggested that a combination of a hydrophilic selenide moiety as a redox center with a long alkyl chain is an effective approach to selenium antioxidants with interfacial glutathione‐peroxidase‐like (GPx‐like) activity. The activity can be controlled by the alkyl chain length.     

Stress-induced increase in urinary isatin excretion in rats: reversal by both dexamethasone and alpha-methyl-P-tyrosine

The effects of acute food deprivation and acute cold exposure on 24-hr urinary isatin excretion in rats and a mechanism responsible for changes in urinary isatin excretion during stress were investigated. This is the first study to demonstrate by HPLC that urinary isatin excretion is increased by stress. Both types of stress induced a marked increase in urinary isatin excretion during the 24 hr following the initiation of stress. Dexamethasone administration prevented the increase in urinary isatin excretion induced by both of the different types of stress. Furthermore, administration of either the benzodiazepine receptor agonist diazepam or the tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine prevented the increase in urinary isatin excretion induced by acute food deprivation, whereas the dopamine-beta-hydroxylase inhibitor diethyldithiocarbamate proved ineffective. These observations suggest that during stress, activated catecholamine-synthesizing cells and corticotropin-releasing factor cells, both of which play central roles in stress responses, may be involved in total isatin production. Isatin may serve as an endogenously generated marker for some types of stress.     

Tailoring elution of tetraalkylammonium ions. Ideal electrostatic selectivity elution order on a polymeric ion exchanger

Although ion exchange is often depicted as a process driven by electrostatic forces, ionic solvation or hydrophobic forces contribute greatly to ion exchange selectivity and is often the dominant factor. On a variety of commercial anion exchange columns, monovalent ClO4- elutes after doubly charged SO42- and even triply charged PO43-. For identically charged alkali metal ions, electrostatic charge densities based on crystal radii would suggest Li+ to be the most strongly retained on a cation exchanger. In practice, it is typically the least strongly held cation on most cation exchangers, because of its very high hydration energy and with most eluents its capacity factor approaches zero. Even when the ion is very poorly solvated, as with tetraalkylammonium (NR4+) cations, there has never been a report on a polymeric ion exchanger of an ideal electrostatic selectivity order where NR4+ cations elute in their increasing charge density order: R = n-butyl first, followed by n-propyl, ethyl, and last, methyl. We show that this selectivity order is easily achieved on recently described methracrylate-based monolithic capillary cation exchange columns (Ueki, Y.; Umemura, T.; Li, J. X.; Odake, T; Tsunoda, K. Anal. Chem. 2004, 76, 7007-7012) with minor amounts of hydroorganic modifiers. Indeed, under such conditions, Li+ (and other alkali cations) elutes after NMe4+.
