Analysis of Protein–Protein Interactions by Using Droplet‐Based Microfluidics

Every little drop : The K_D values of angiogenin (ANG) interactions as shown by FRET analysis of thousands of pL‐sized droplets agree with data from bulk‐fluorescence polarization measurements. Importantly, the use of fluorophores does not affect the activity of ANG or the binding of anti‐ANG antibodies to ANG. Such an experimental platform could be applied to the high‐throughput analysis of protein–protein interactions.

     

Effect of superatmospheric oxygen packaging on sensorial quality,spoilage, and Listeria monocytogenes and Aeromonas caviae growth in fresh processed mixed salads

Atmospheres with O2 levels higher than 70 kPa have recently been suggested as an innovation to modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for fresh processed vegetables to maintain sensory quality and safety. In the present work, mixed vegetable salad collected from a commercial processing plant and stored with the MAP technique was studied. Two gas mixtures were actively generated by using an initial O2 concentration of 95 kPa and combined with two plastic films. The low-barrier film permeability for O2 was 1,629 mlO2/m2 x 24 h x atm with 30 microm of thickness (Hyplast, Hoogstraten, Belgium) and the O2 permeability of the high-barrier film was 2 mlO2/m2 x 24h x atm with 150 microm of thickness (Euralpack, Wommelgen, Belgium) at 23 degrees C. As control, active conventional MAP with application of 3 to 5 kPa of O2 and 6 to 8 kPa of CO2 was used. Packaged salads were stored up to 8 days at 4 degrees C and at temperatures simulating chilled distribution chain conditions. Microbial safety and sensory quality, as well as the survival of inoculated Listeria monocytogenes and Aeromonas caviae, were monitored. The effect of superatmospheric O2 on the growth of aerobic microflora was variable. Under superatmospheric conditions, lactic acid bacteria and members of Enterobacteriaceae were inhibited. Nevertheless, growth of yeast and A. caviae seem to be stimulated by superatmospheric O2, whereas growth of psychrotrophic bacteria and L monocytogenes was not affected. The overall visual appearance (mainly color) of the mixed vegetable salads was better maintained and the shelf life prolonged when packaged under O2 concentrations greater than 50 kPa.     

Identifying Traits and Values of Top-Performing Information Security Personnel

Enterprise information security is a talent-centric proposition. Information assurance is a product of the combined expertise, attention-to-detail, and creativity of an information security team. A competitive edge can be obtained by hiring the top information security professionals. Therefore, identifying the right people is a mission-critical task. To assist in the candidate selection process, this research analyzes the enduring traits and values of top security performers. It identifies the personality traits and values which distinguish high-performing information security workers. In a laboratory study, a series of simulations were administered to 61 subjects to assess their ability to solve various information security problems. The characteristics of top information security performers were contrasted against the rest of the cohort. In terms of personality, the top performers have higher levels of conscientiousness and openness. With respect to values, the top performers have stronger theoretical and economic values.

Influences of APOE ε4 and expertise on performance of older pilots.

Little is known about how APOE ε4-related differences in cognitive performance translate to real-life performance, where training and experience may help to sustain performance. We investigated the influences of APOE ε4 status, expertise (FAA pilot proficiency ratings), and their interaction on longitudinal flight simulator performance. Over a 2-year period, 139 pilots aged 42–69 years were tested annually. APOE ε4 carriers had lower memory performance than noncarriers (p = .019). APOE interacted with Expertise (p = .036), such that the beneficial influence of expertise (p = .013) on longitudinal flight simulator performance was more pronounced for ε4 carriers. Results suggest that relevant training and activity may help sustain middle-aged and older adults' real-world performance, especially among APOE ε4 carriers.
