Simulations of beam propagation in three-dimensional random media were used to study the effects of atmospheric refractive turbulence on coherent lidar performance. By use of the two-beam model, the lidar return is expressed in terms of the overlap integral of the transmitter and the virtual (backpropagated) local oscillator beams at the target, reducing the problem to one of computing irradiance along the two propagation paths. This approach provides the tools for analyzing laser radar with general refractive turbulence conditions, beam truncation at the antenna aperture, beam-angle misalignment, and arbitrary transmitter and receiver configurations. Simplifying assumptions used in analytical studies, were tested and treated as benchmarks for determining the accuracy of the simulations. The simulation permitted characterization of the effect on lidar performance of the analytically intractable return variance that results from turbulent fluctuations as well as of the heterodyne optical power and system-antenna efficiency.  相似文献

We describe the analysis of heat flow in a type of tunable optical fiber grating that uses thin-film resistive heaters microfabricated on the surface of the fiber. The high rate of heat loss from these microstructures and the relatively low thermal diffusivity of the glass yield unusual thermal properties. Approximate one-dimensional analytical calculations capture important aspects of the thermal characteristics of these systems. Comparison with experimental results that we obtained from devices with established designs validates certain features of the computations. This modeling also establishes the suitability of integrated thin-film heaters for several new types of tunable fiber grating devices.  相似文献

This communication reports a numerical simulation of reentry induction by successive stimulation (S1-S2) that does not require an S1 gradient of refractoriness. The S1 action potential is uniform in space, so before the S2 stimulus there is no refractory gradient. Nevertheless, a unipolar S2 stimulus initiates quatrefoil reentry. The result supports the growing realization that virtual electrodes, hyperpolarization, de-excitation, and break excitation may be important during reentry induction.  相似文献

The Canadian Test-Day Model is a 12-trait random regression animal model in which traits are milk, fat, and protein test-day yields, and somatic cell scores on test days within each of first three lactations. Test-day records from later lactations are not used. Random regressions (genetic and permanent environmental) were based on Wilmink's three parameter function that includes an intercept, regression on days in milk, and regression on an exponential function to the power -0.05 times days in milk. The model was applied to over 22 million test-day records of over 1.4 million cows in seven dairy breeds for cows first calving since 1988. A theoretical comparison of test-day model to 305-d complete lactation animal model is given. Each animal in an analysis receives 36 additive genetic solutions (12 traits by three regression coefficients), and these are combined to give one estimated breeding value (EBV) for each of milk, fat, and protein yields, average daily somatic cell score and milk yield persistency (for bulls only). Correlation of yield EBV with previous 305-d lactation model EBV for bulls was 0.97 and for cows was 0.93 (Holsteins). A question is whether EBV for yield traits for each lactation should be combined into one overall EBV, and if so, what method to combine them. Implementation required development of new methods for approximation of reliabilities of EBV, inclusion of cows without test day records in analysis, but which were still alive and had progeny with test-day records, adjustments for heterogeneous herd-test date variances, and international comparisons. Efforts to inform the dairy industry about changes in EBV due to the model and recovering information needed to explain changes in specific animals' EBV are significant challenges. The Canadian dairy industry will require a year or more to become comfortable with the test-day model and to realize the impact it could have on selection decisions.  相似文献

An arteriovenous kinetics technique was used to monitor mammary gland lysine and protein metabolism in goats (n = 4) at two stages of lactation (80 +/- 17 vs. 233 +/- 14 DIM) in response to an i.v. infusion of lysine (Lys) plus methionine (Met). At each stage of lactation [2-15N] and [1-13C; 6,6-2H2] Lys kinetics were performed on the last day of 5-d i.v. infusion of saline followed by Lys (370 mg/h) plus Met (84 mg/h, LM). Milk and protein yields and dry matter intake were higher in early than in late lactation, but LM infusion did not affect these variables. Regardless of stage of lactation, the absolute and fractional oxidation rates of Lys by the mammary gland increased in response to LM infusion. When corrected for Lys oxidation, net uptake of Lys by the gland was less than milk protein Lys secretion. However, correction for the contribution of peptides (15.8%) to Lys uptake brought net Lys uptake close into balance with milk Lys secretion. The present data suggests that when Lys is in excess of requirements, the mammary gland appears to dispose of the extra supply via the oxidative mechanism.  相似文献

High-repetition fast-scan cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to quantify and characterize the kinetics of dopamine and dopamine-o-quinone adsorption and desorption at carbon-fiber microelectrodes. A flow injection analysis system was used for the precise introduction and removal of a bolus of electroactive substance on a sub-second time scale to the disk-shaped surface of a microelectrode that was fabricated from a single carbon fiber (Thornel type T650 or P55). Pretreatment of the electrode surfaces consisted of soaking them in purified isopropyl alcohol for a minimum of 10 min, which resulted in S/N increasing by 200-400% for dopamine above that for those that were soaked in reagent grade solvent. Because of adsorption, high scan rates (2,000 V/s) are shown to exhibit equivalent S/N ratios as compared to slower, more traditional scan rates. In addition, the steady-state response to a concentration bolus is shown to occur more rapidly when cyclic voltammetric scans are repeated at short intervals (4 ms). The new methodologies allow for more accurate determinations of the kinetics of neurotransmitter release events (10-500 ms) in biological systems. Brain slice and in vivo experiments using T650 cylinder microelectrodes show that voltammetrically measured uptake kinetics in the caudate are faster using 2,000 V/s and 240 Hz measurements, as compared to 300 V/s and 10 Hz.  相似文献

Job rotation is one method that is sometimes used to reduce exposure to strenuous materials handling; however, developing effective rotation schedules can be complex in even moderate sized facilities. The purpose of this research is to develop methods of incorporating safety criteria into scheduling algorithms to produce job rotation schedules that reduce the potential for injury. Integer programming and a genetic algorithm were used to construct job rotation schedules. Schedules were comprised of lifting tasks whose potential for causing injury was assessed with the Job Severity Index. Each method was used to design four job rotation schedules that met specified safety criteria in a working environment where the object weight, horizontal distance and repetition rate varied over time. Each rotation was assigned to a specific gender/lifting capacity group. Five versions of the integer programming search method were applied to this problem. Each version generated one job rotation schedule. The genetic algorithm model was able to create a population of 437 feasible solutions to the rotation problem. Utilizing cluster analysis, a rule set was derived from the genetic algorithm generated solutions. These rules provided guidelines for designing safe job rotation schedules without the use of a computer. The advantages and limitations of these approaches in developing administrative controls for the prevention of back injury are discussed.  相似文献

The continuing need for in-situ measurements of physical properties of wastes contained within many high level radioactive waste tanks within the Hanford Site has initiated experimental and theoretical investigations of candidate measurement methods. This paper describes experiments performed with acoustic waveguide sensors. This technology has potential application at the Hanford Site for in-situ measurements of density, viscosity, and temperature of liquid wastes. Waveguides of both circular and rectangular geometry were used in these studies for determination of the densities and viscosities of various fluids. The flight time of a torsional pulse through the sensing region of the waveguide forms the measured quantity. The flight time depends on the velocity of the wave through the sensing region of the waveguide, and this velocity in turn depends upon the properties of the fluid in contact with the waveguide. We performed experiments with 15 different fluids, most of which were single-phase Newtonian fluids. However, three of the fluids were particle-liquid mixtures, and one of these Newtonian in behavior. Most of the wastes held in Hanford tanks contain high solids content. The results of our experiments showed that acoustic waveguides were well suited for measurements in most Newtonian fluids, in agreement with earlier research presented in the literature. However, results for two-phase Newtonian fluids containing particles indicate that, in our case, the waveguides responded primarily to the background fluid rather than the mixture. Very poor results were obtained with the non-Newtonian fluid. In addition, there was a class of fluids, which serve the community as viscosity standards, for which viscosities determined with torsional waveguides were in disagreement with viscosities obtained with standard viscometers.  相似文献
