Outer space is an extremely hostile environment for human life, with ionizing radiation from galactic cosmic rays and microgravity posing the most significant hazards to the health of astronauts. Spaceflight has also been shown to have an impact on established cancer hallmarks, possibly increasing carcinogenic risk. Terrestrially, women have a higher incidence of radiation-induced cancers, largely driven by lung, thyroid, breast, and ovarian cancers, and therefore, historically, they have been permitted to spend significantly less time in space than men. In the present review, we focus on the effects of microgravity and radiation on the female reproductive system, particularly gynecological cancer. The aim is to provide a summary of the research that has been carried out related to the risk of gynecological cancer, highlighting what further studies are needed to pave the way for safer exploration class missions, as well as postflight screening and management of women astronauts following long-duration spaceflight.  相似文献

We hypothesise that stream sediment elemental composition can predict mean and minimum concentrations of alkalinity, Ca and Mg in the river water throughout a river network. We tested this hypothesis for the River Derwent catchment in North Yorkshire, England, by using 6 years of water chemistry data from the Environment Agency and a digital elevation model to flow path-weight British Geological Survey (BGS) sediment element concentration data. The predictive models for mean concentrations were excellent for Ca and alkalinity, but less good for Mg, and did not require land use data inputs as stream water sediment composition seems to reflect all aspects of the riparian zone soil system. Predictive model forms were linear. Attempts to predict minimum values for Ca and alkalinity also were less satisfactory. This probably is due to variations in hydrological response times to individual precipitation events across the catchment.  相似文献

Indoor air pollution from the combustion of traditional biomass fuels (wood, cow dung, and crop wastes) is a significant public health problem predominantly for poor populations in many developing countries. It is particularly problematic for the women who are normally responsible for food preparation and cooking, and for infants/young children who spend time around their mothers near the cooking area. Airborne particulate matter (PM) samples were collected from cooking and living areas in homes in a rural area of Bangladesh to investigate the impact of fuel use, kitchen configurations, and ventilation on indoor air quality and to apportion the source contributions of the measured trace metals and BC concentrations. Lower PM concentrations were observed when liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was used for cooking. PM concentrations varied significantly depending on the position of kitchen, fuel use and ventilation rates. From reconstructed mass (RCM) calculations, it was found that the major constituent of the PM was carbonaceous matter. Soil and smoke were identified as components from elemental composition data. It was also found that some kitchen configurations have lower PM concentrations than others even with the use of low-grade biomass fuels. Adoption of these kitchen configurations would be a cost-effective approach in reducing exposures from cooking in these rural areas.  相似文献

Research suggests that providing others with elaborated explanations is more beneficial for learning than receiving explanations (e.g., Webb, 1989). Applied to chat communication in a collaborative inquiry learning environment, we would expect that in a dyad learners with more domain-related contributions than their partners would learn more. In the paper we develop a method to examine the relation between domain-related chats and learning outcome for intuitive knowledge. We describe how we automatically extract domain-related messages, and score them based on domain-orientedness. The analysis confirms that there is a positive relation between a high score on domain-related chats and the learning improvement as measured by the difference between a post-test and a pre-test on intuitive knowledge.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of crosslinking density of poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) microgels on catalytic activity of silver nanoparticles fabricated hybrid microgels. Multiresponsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) microgels with 2, 4, 6 and 8 mole percentage of N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. These microgels were characterized by dynamic light scattering and were used as microreactors to synthesize silver nanoparticles. Hybrid system was characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of hybrid microgels with different crosslinker content was compared by studying the reduction of pnitrophenol as a model reaction. Kinetics of reaction was monitored by spectrophotometry. The value of the apparent rate constant decreases from 0.568 to 0.313min?1, when content of crosslinker are increased from 2 to 8 mole percentage respectively. This decreases in value of apparent rate constant is due to increase in diffusional barrier offered by high crosslinking of polymer network at high mole percentages of N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide.  相似文献

Separation of particle mixtures in micron size range is of concern to many industrial processes. The experimental work presented in this article has looked into the operational assessment of a novel vertical vibration driven particle separator by using a positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) technique. In addition to PEPT, a smoke blanket visualization technique was used to track the intestinal air movements during the course of vibration induced particle separation. Three different finely sized glass and bronze particle mixtures that formed an average particle bed heights of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mm in separation cells of thickness 20 and 40 mm were used to investigate the particle separation behavior. For a range of operating conditions, the results showed in favor of low particle bed heights (below 40 mm), lower vibration frequency (30 ± 10% Hz) and a small partition separation gap size of 5 mm for optimum separation of bronze particles in the presence of air.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of allergic asthma are triggered by allergen exposure inducing allergic inflammation and hyperreactivity of the bronchi. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the possible relationship between clinical symptoms and signs of asthma, i.e. bronchial variability as measured by peak expiatory flow rate (PEFR), bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) and mediators of allergic inflammation. METHODS: Twenty-eight children with pollinosis, but no obvious history of asthma, were studied at three occasions, i.e. before, during and after (autumn) the birch pollen season. Twelve children sensitive to birch pollen were considered as the case group. Sixteen children, who were only clinically sensitive to grass pollen, served as controls. Subjective symptoms of asthma were recorded by visual analogue scale, BHR was estimated by methacholine bronchial provocation tests, bronchial variability PEFR and circulating mediators of inflammation, i.e. eosinophil cationic protein, eosinophil protein X, myeloperoxidase and tryptase in serum. RESULTS: Bronchial hyperreactivity and by PEFR was more pronounced after than during the season (P < 0.01), whereas eosinophil mediators and the peak expiratory flow rate increased during the season (P < 0.05). Except for between PEFR variability and BHR in the autumn (r = 0.45; P = 0.014), no correlations were found. However, in the autumn, the majority of children were still hyperreactive in the bronchi and showed PEFR variability but the levels of eosinophil mediators in serum had returned to normal levels. CONCLUSION: Signs and symptoms of asthma did not correlate with serum levels of mediators of allergic inflammation. Bronchial hyperreactivity and PEFR variability persisted after the pollen season when signs of bronchial inflammation had disappeared. We hypothesize that eosinophil mediators and other markers of allergic inflammation disappear after the late-phase reaction, whereas BHR persists. This would explain the lack of correlation between the levels of eosinophil mediators in serum and symptoms of asthma and BHR.  相似文献
