Leiomyosarcoma of vascular origin are rare tumors arising most frequently from the inferior vena cava (IVC). We report on three patients one of whom underwent definitive resection. These tumors most commonly involve the upper segment of the IVC, and appear with manifestations of the Budd-Chiari syndrome. Lesions at this level are not amenable to surgical therapy. Tumors of the middle and lower segments of the IVC usually cause right-sided pain. Diagnosis is difficult, but is best approached preoperatively by angiography and vena cavography. Optimal therapy of lesions at these levels is surgical resection. Resection of the IVC below the hepatic veins is possible with renal function preserved by collateral drainage of the left renal vein. 相似文献

Core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) are amongst the most promising candidates in the development of new functional materials. Their fabrication and characterization are challenging, in particular when thin and intact shells are needed. To date no technique has been available that differentiates between intact and broken or cracked shells. Here a method is presented to distinguish and quantify these types of shells in a single cyclic voltammetry experiment by using the different electrochemical reactivities of the core and the shell material. A simple comparison of the charge measured during the stripping of the core material before and after the removal of the shell makes it possible to determine the quality of the shells and to estimate their thickness. As a proof‐of‐concept two multifunctional examples of core–shell NPs, Fe3O4@Au and Au@SnO2, are used. This general and original method can be applied whenever core and shell materials show different redox properties. Because billions of NPs are probed simultaneously and at a low cost, this method is a convenient new screening tool for the development of new multifunctional core–shell materials and is hence a powerful complementary technique or even an alternative to the state‐of‐the‐art characterization of core–shell NPs by TEM. 相似文献

The aim of this in vivo study was to gather quantitative information on the three-dimensional morphology of a new vascular network under the influence of angioactive growth factors. For this purpose, the arteriovenous loop model was used in 10 Lewis rats to generate a bioartificial vascular assembly by means of vascular induction. In this model, an isolated organoid is created in the medial thigh of the animal by methods of tissue engineering. A fibrin gel containing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF(165)) and basic fibroblastic growth factor (bFGF) was used as a matrix in the effect group (GF+). Fibrin matrices devoid of growth factors were used as controls (GF-). A microvascular replica of the organoid was created by means of corrosion casting and the network was investigated on stereo-paired images obtained by scanning electron microscopy. Vectors of intercapillary and interbranching distances as well as the diameter of the pores in the intussusceptive events diameter and the ratio of sprouting versus intussusceptive angiogenic events were compared in the two groups. The results were highly significant. In the GF+ group there were more profound three-dimensional morphological traits of angiogenesis, whereas advanced neovascularisation in the phase of remodelling was demonstrated by a higher incidence of intussusception, compared to control. The work was carried out to investigate the relationship of non-cholinergic late slow excitatory potential (LS-EPSP) with 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and substance P (SP) in the neurons of the guinea pig celiac ganglion (CG) using intracellular electrodes in vitro. During repetitive stimulation of the splanchnic nerve (SN), LS-EPSP following a series of action potentials could be recorded in 161 out of 206 neurons (78.2%); Application of 5-HT and SP by superfusion or pressure ejection induced 5-HT depolarization in 102 out of 149 neurons (68.5%) and SP depolarization in 98 out of 188 neurons (52.1%), respectively; Most neurons, from which LS-EPSP could be recorded during stimulation of SN, were sensitive to 5-HT (73/88, 83.0%) and SP (68/114, 59.7%). However, only a small number of neurons not showing LS-EPSP during stimulation of SN were sensitive to 5-HT (10/26, 38.5%, P < 0.0001) and SP (11/36, 30.6%, P < 0.01). The results support the viewpoint that both 5-HT and SP are involved in the formation of LS-EPSP as transmitters; In addition, both effects of 5-HT and SP were examined in 133 neurons. There were 66 of these neurons (49.6%) to be sensitive to both 5-HT and SP, suggesting that there may be some functional relations between 5-HT and SP in the neurons of guinea pig CG. 相似文献

We designed and performed a multicenter clinical trial to determine the relationship between measurements of the level of the enzyme aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) to other measures used to detect periodontal disease and monitor outcome of treatment, including pocket depth and gingival inflammation. 32 periodontitis patients were enrolled at the University of Washington, Seattle, 30 at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and 34 at the University of Illinois, Chicago. 10 periodontally normal control subjects were enrolled at each location. 8 diseased and 4 healthy sites were designated for study in each patient and 8 healthy sites designated in each control subject. Measures of disease included pocket depth, severity of gingival inflammation, and GCF volume. AST levels were measured using the PerioGard test kit. Clinical measurements were made and GCF samples harvested and tested 2x before and 2x after therapy consisting of scaling and root planing under local anesthetic. Specific design and other issues are discussed, including selection of patients and control subjects, sample size, selection of experimental test sites, methods for assessment of diseased and therapeutic improvement, harvesting of GCF and selection of appropriate biostatistical methods for data analysis. Demographics of the patient populations at the 3 locations are reported. As expected, therapy induced only negligible changes in the measures of disease at healthy sites in control subjects, and relatively minor improvement in healthy sites in patients. In contrast, statistically significant improvement relative to pretreatment baseline status in all 3 measures of disease was observed for diseased sites at all 3 study locations with all p-values less than 0.0002. The magnitude of improvement was comparable to that reported previously by others. The % of PerioGard-positive sites decreased significantly between the screening baseline and both post-treatment visits for patients at all 3 locations, with p values of 0.0001 to <0.0008. 相似文献
