The olfactory responses of red flour beetles,Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), to methyl and ethyl ester of C14–C18 fatty acid prepared from tallow were studied. Methyl octadecanoate and ethyl octadecanoate discouraged aggregation of beetle adults. Ethyl 9.12-octadecadienoate acted as a repellent. Methyl pentadecanoate and ethyl tetradecanoate induced copulation at the level of 5 × 102 and 2 × 103 g, respectively. The maximum response was observed at the level of 5 × 102 g of the same compounds, and these compounds appear to stimulate males only. 相似文献

This research aimed to study physicochemical properties and in vitro digestibility of flours and starches from taro cultivated in different regions of Thailand, that is, Kanchanaburi (KB), Chiang Mai (CM), Phetchaburi (PB) and Saraburi (SB). Taro starches were extracted from taro flours using either water or alkaline extraction. The taro flours had significantly (P ≤ 0.05) larger particle size, higher pasting and gelatinisation temperatures, and resistant starch content but lower total starch content, whiteness (L* value), paste viscosities and clarity than their corresponding extracted starches. All the taro starches exhibited polygonal and irregular granules and gave A-type X-ray diffraction pattern. The alkaline-extracted taro starches had significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher extraction yield, total starch content, L* value, pasting and gelatinisation temperatures, and paste clarity but lower granular size, amylose content, resistant starch content, paste viscosities and relative crystallinity than their water-extracted counterparts. 相似文献

Four types of supplementary foods (FSs) based on popped wheat (Triticum vulgare), ragi (Eleusine coracana), bajra (Pennisetum americanum) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) blended with soy (Glycine max Merr) and bengalgram (Cicer arietinum) and fortified with vitamins and minerals were prepared on a pilot plant scale. All the FSs contained 10–20% proteins and
350–380 kcal of energy. Moisture sorption characteristics of these FSs were evaluated at room temperature (27 °C) with a
view to designing a functional package for such products. The results revealed that a moisture content of about 10% (equilibrium
relative humidity 68–70%) is optimum to give a good storage stability to the products. Above the 10% moisture level the products
were found to be vulnerable to microbial spoilage (mould growth), leading to quality deterioration. In order to protect these
types of products from being spoiled by mould growth during storage, use of moisture-proof packaging materials based on high
density polyethylene and polypropylene may be considered.

The lamina cribrosa has been postulated from in vitro studies as an early site of damage in glaucoma. Prior in vivo measures of laminar morphology have been confounded by ocular aberrations. In this study the lamina cribrosa was imaged after correcting for ocular aberrations using the adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) in normal and glaucomatous eyes of rhesus monkeys. All measured laminar morphological parameters showed increased magnitudes in glaucomatous eyes relative to fellow control eyes, indicating altered structure. The AOSLO provides high-quality images of the lamina cribrosa and may have potential as a tool for early identification of glaucoma. 相似文献

Undoped and Cu-doped zinc titanates were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The structural and phase transition properties were studied using powder XRD. The elemental composition of the samples was studied using EDAX analysis. Optical studies were carried by measuring photoluminescence and diffused reflectance. Bandgap energies were calculated using Tauc’s relation from the diffuse reflectance spectra. A decrease in lattice parameters, unit cell volume and bandgap energies were observed with Cu doping in zinc titanate. Photoluminescence intensity at 386 nm in the violet region was enhanced on increasing Cu dopant concentration. 相似文献
