This study explores a novel subspace projection-based approach for analysis of stressed speech. Studies have shown that stress influences the speech production system and it results in a large acoustic variation between the neutral and the stressed speech. This degrades the discrimination capability of an automatic speech recognition system trained on neutral speech when tested on stressed speech. An effort is made to reduce the acoustic mismatch by explicitly normalizing the stress-specific attributes. The stress-specific divergences are normalized by exploiting the subspace filtering technique. To accomplish this, an orthogonal projection based linear relationship between the speech and the stress information has been explored to filter an effective speech subspace, which consists of speech information. Speech subspace is constructed using K-means clustering followed by singular value decomposition method using neutral speech data. The speech and the stress information are separated by projecting the stressed speech orthogonally onto an effective speech subspace. Experimental results indicate that, the bases of an effective subspace comprises the first few eigenvectors corresponding to the highest eigenvalues. To further improve the system performance, both the neutral and the stressed speech are projected onto the lower dimensional subspace. The projections derived using the neutral speech employs heteroscedastic linear discriminant analysis in maximum likelihood linear transformations-based semi-tied adaptation framework. Recognizing a subject given a set of biometrics is a fundamental pattern recognition problem. This paper builds novel statistical models for multibiometric systems using geometric and multinomial distributions. These models are generic as they are only based on the similarity scores produced by a recognition system. They predict the bounds on the range of indices within which a test subject is likely to be present in a sorted set of similarity scores. These bounds are then used in the multibiometric recognition system to predict a smaller subset of subjects from the database as probable candidates for a given test subject. Experimental results show that the proposed models enhance the recognition rate beyond the underlying matching algorithms for multiple face views, fingerprints, palm prints, irises and their combinations. 相似文献

The field of computer supported cooperative work aims at providing information technology models, methods, and tools that assist individuals to cooperate. The presented paper is based on three main observations from literature. First, one of the problems in utilizing information technology for cooperation is to identify the relevance of information, called awareness. Second, research in computer supported cooperative work proposes the use of agent technologies to aid individuals to maintain their awareness. Third, literature lacks the formalized methods on how software agents can identify awareness. This paper addresses the problem of awareness identification. The main contribution of this paper is to propose and evaluate a formalized structure, called Policy-based Awareness Management (PAM). PAM extends the logic of general awareness in order to identify relevance of information. PAM formalizes existing policies into Directory Enabled Networks-next generation structure and uses them as a source for awareness identification. The formalism is demonstrated by applying PAM to the space shuttle Columbia disaster occurred in 2003. The paper also argues that efficacy and cost-efficiency of the logic of general awareness will be increased by PAM. The present paper evaluates the use of software agents to identify relevance of information, called awareness. This evaluation is based on existing policies and scenarios in the context of wireless communication of a hospital in Norway. The study is to address the lack of literature for experimental studies on a method to employ software agents for awareness identification. Research in computer supported cooperative work indicates the significant contributions of software agents to assist individuals. There are bodies of work that show awareness provides the means for software agents in which effective cooperation can take place. In addition, the role of the methods to identify awareness is emphasized in the literature of both computer supported cooperative work and software agents. This paper explains a step-wise process, called Policy-based Awareness Management, which allows agents to use policies as a source to identify awareness and thus change their behaviors accordingly. The contribution of this method is based on the concepts proposed by the logic of general awareness. The present study applies Directory Enabled Networks-next generation as the policy structure for the method. The paper evaluates the process via its application to identify the relevance of information in wireless communication scenarios in a hospital. The present study conducts observations, interviews and discussions on the wireless communication system of the hospital to identify the different scenarios happening in the system. Current moving object detection systems typically detect shadows cast by the moving object as part of the moving object. In this paper, the problem of separating moving cast shadows from the moving objects in an outdoor environment is addressed. Unlike previous work, we present an approach that does not rely on any geometrical assumptions such as camera location and ground surface/object geometry. The approach is based on a new spatio-temporal albedo test and dichromatic reflection model and accounts for both the sun and the sky illuminations. Results are presented for several video sequences representing a variety of ground materials when the shadows are cast on different surface types. This paper addresses the estimation of a small gallery size that can generate the optimal error estimate and its confidence on a large population (relative to the size of the gallery) which is one of the fundamental problems encountered in performance prediction for object recognition. It uses a generalized two-dimensional prediction model that combines a hypergeometric probability distribution model with a binomial model and also considers the data distortion problem in large populations. Learning is incorporated in the prediction process in order to find the optimal small gallery size and to improve the prediction. The Chernoff and Chebychev inequalities are used as a guide to obtain the small gallery size. During the prediction, the expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm is used to learn the match score and the non-match score distributions that are represented as a mixture of Gaussians. The optimal size of the small gallery is learned by comparing it with the sizes obtained by the statistical approaches and at the same time the upper and lower bounds for the prediction on large populations are obtained. A Si/SiC ceramic was prepared from cotton fabric by the reactive infiltration of liquid silicon into the carbon template. A large density difference between the samples has been observed. This may be due to the variation in the pore size and its distribution within the sample. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy shows the presence of three distinct phases, i.e., SiC, free Si and free carbon. X-ray diffraction pattern also confirms the presence of SiC and Si phases. However, there is no peak corresponding to carbon. So, it is inferred that the carbon exists in amorphous form. Micro-hardness, fracture toughness and bending strength of the ceramics were also studied. The values are lower than commercially available SiC ceramics. This may be due to the highly porous nature of cotton fabric-based SiC, as compared to commercially available SiC. 相似文献
