The influence of dissipation on the prefactor in the expression of the decay probability of a metastable state via macroscopic quantum tunneling is discussed. It is shown that under experimental conditions, because of the small number of levels in the well, such a correction is of paramount importance. Moreover, the full coincidence is shown between the expression of the decay probability derived from usual quantum mechanics and that obtained by the functional integral method in the limit of zero viscosity. The whole discussion, though of wide generality, is referred to a Josephson junction as a physical model, for which some conclusions of experimental interest are drawn. 相似文献

1. Azimuth and sound pressure level (SPL) tuning to noise stimulation was characterized in single-unit samples obtained from primary auditory cortex (AI) and in areas of the medial geniculate body (MGB) that project to AI. The primary aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that AI is an important site of synthesis of single-unit responses that exhibit both azimuth sensitivity (tendency for directionally restricted responsiveness) and nonmonotonic (NM) level tuning (tendency for decreased responsiveness with increasing SPL). This was accomplished by comparing the proportions of such responses in AI and MGB. 2. Samples consisted of high-best-frequency (BF) single units located in MGB (n = 217) and AI (n = 216) of barbiturate-anesthetized cats. The MGB sample was obtained mainly from recording sites located in two nuclei that project to AI, the ventral nucleus (VN, n = 118) and the lateral part of the posterior group of thalamic nuclei (Po, n = 84). In addition, a few MGB units were obtained from the medial division (n = 8) or uncertain locations (n = 7). Each unit's responses were studied using noise bursts presented from azimuthal sound directions distributed throughout 180 degrees of the frontal hemifield at 0 degrees elevation. SPL was varied over an 80-dB range in steps of < or = 20 dB at each location. Similarities and differences in azimuth and level tuning were evaluated statistically by comparing the AI sample with the entire MGB sample. If they were found to differ, the AI, VN, and Po samples were compared. 3. Azimuth function modulation was used as a measure of azimuth sensitivity, and its mean was greater in AI than in MGB. NM strength was defined as the percentage reduction in level function value at 75 dB SPL and its mean was greater in AI (showing a greater tendency for decreased responsiveness) than in MGB. Azimuth-sensitive (AS) NM units were identified by jointly categorizing each sample according to both azimuth sensitivity (sensitive and insensitive categories) and NM strength (NM and monotonic categories). AS NM units were much more common in the AI sample than in any of the MGB samples, suggesting that some such responses are synthesized in AI. 4. A vast majority of AI NM units have been reported to be AS, showing a preferential association (linkage) between these two response properties. This finding was confirmed in AI, but was not found to be the case in MGB. This suggests that a linkage between these response properties emerges in the cortex, presumably as a result of synthesis of NM AS responses. Although the functional significance of the linkage is unknown, NM responses may reflect excitatory/inhibitory antagonism that provides AS AI neurons with sensitivity to stimulus features beyond that which is present in MGB. 5. Breadth of azimuth tuning of AS cells was measured as the portion of the frontal hemifield over which azimuth function values were > 75% of maximum (preferred azimuth range, PAR). PARs were broadly distributed in each structure, and mean PAR was narrower in AI than in MGB. A preferred level range (PLR) was defined for NM level functions as the range over which values were > 75% of maximum, and mean PLRs were similar in each sample. There was a weak, but significant, positive correlation between PARs and PLRs in AI but not in MGB. This further suggests a linkage between azimuth and level tuning in AI that does not exist in MGB. 6. Best azimuth (midpoint of the PAR) was used to classify cells as contralateral preferring, ipsilateral preferring, midline preferring, or multipeaked. Samples from AI and MGB exhibited similar distributions of these categories. Contralateral-preferring cells represented a majority of each sample, whereass midline-preferring, ipsilateral-preferring, and multipeaked cells each represented smaller proportions. Mutations in some exons of the RET proto-oncogene were recently observed in Hirschsprung patients. Using DNA polymorphisms and single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis for the whole coding sequence of the RET proto-oncogene, 82 unrelated Hirschsprung patients were screened systematically. A total of 4 complete deletions of RET and 12 point mutations were identified, each present in no more than one patient and distributed along the whole gene. De novo mutations could be documented in 4 patients. Southern blot and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis carried out in a restricted number of patients did not reveal any deletion of RET. This paper proposes a distributed multi-agent approach for dynamic part routing in automated manufacturing systems. In particular, each part in the system is associated to an intelligent software agent that must select its next destination autonomously (i.e. ignoring the actions of the other agents) and in real time (i.e. at each time it completes an operation on a workstation). Differently from other existing approaches, we overcome the typical myopia of negotiation algorithms based on dispatching rules by allowing the part agents to take decisions not only about the imminent operation, but also for the subsequent ones. The anticipated decisions are transmitted to workstation agents, which are also designated to detect and resolve conflicts by modifying part agents’ decisions. To describe the single agents and their interaction schemes in a formal way, we take advantage of DEVS discrete-event modelling tools, which also allow us to develop a detailed simulation platform for our multi-agent system. Protein hydrogels were prepared by substituting ovalbumin with different concentrations of ethyl vinyl sulfone (EVS) or acrylic acid (AA) and crosslinking with divinyl sulfone (DVS). Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic studies confirmed the addition of EVS, AA, and DVS onto the protein. Swelling was assessed as a function of pH in the range of 2.5 to 9.4 and ionic strength. The elastic modulus of the gels was determined in shear and compression. Stress relaxation was assessed in compression. The substituent highly affected swelling and modulus with both hydrogels displaying non-Gaussian behavior in the range of hydrogel environments studied. Acrylic acid substituted ovalbumin exhibited a decreasing modulus with increasing swelling behaving as a polyelectrolyte with low added salt content. Ethyl vinyl sulfone substituted ovalbumin displayed an increasing modulus with swelling originating in the finite extensibility of the highly swollen chains. AA-substituted ovalbumin showed higher modulus and reduced swelling compared to EVS-substituted ovalbumin because of its ability to hydrogen and ionic bond to other molecules. 相似文献

Glycosylation is a complex post-translational modification that conveys functional diversity to glycoconjugates. Cell surface glycosylation mediates several biological activities such as induction of the intracellular signaling pathway and pathogen recognition. Red blood cell (RBC) membrane N-glycans determine blood type and influence cell lifespan. Although several proteomic studies have been carried out, the glycosylation of RBC membrane proteins has not been systematically investigated. This work aims at exploring the human RBC N-glycome by high-sensitivity MALDI-MS techniques to outline a fingerprint of RBC N-glycans. To this purpose, the MALDI-TOF spectra of healthy subjects harboring different blood groups were acquired. Results showed the predominant occurrence of neutral and sialylated complex N-glycans with bisected N-acetylglucosamine and core- and/or antennary fucosylation. In the higher mass region, these species presented with multiple N-acetyllactosamine repeating units. Amongst the detected glycoforms, the presence of glycans bearing ABO(H) antigens allowed us to define a distinctive spectrum for each blood group. For the first time, advanced glycomic techniques have been applied to a comprehensive exploration of human RBC N-glycosylation, providing a new tool for the early detection of distinct glycome changes associated with disease conditions as well as for understanding the molecular recognition of pathogens. 相似文献

Ferrous-sulphate infused gels, or 'Fricke gels', encounter great interest in the field of radiation dosimetry, due to their potential for 3D radiation dose mapping. Typically, magnetic resonance (MR) relaxation rates are determined in these systems in order to derive the absorbed dose. However, when large concentration gradients are present, diffusion effects before and during the MR imaging may not be negligible. In these cases, optical techniques may represent a viable alternative. This paper describes research aimed at measuring 3D dose distributions in a Fricke-xylenol orange gel by measuring optical density with a CCD camera. This method is inexpensive and fast. A series of early experiments is described, in which optical density profiles were measured with a commercial microdensitometer for film dosimetry. The light box of the device was modified to work at 567 nm, close to the maximum absorbance of the ferric ion-xylenol orange complex. Under these conditions, the gel shows linearity with dose and high sensitivity. 相似文献
