The authors report a case of Huntington's disease in an 11-year-old boy with onset at six years of age. The neurological signs and symptoms were midway between the hyperkinetic and rigid forms of chorea. Intellectual development was characterized by a medium-grade deficit. MRI revealed marked atrophy of the head of the caudate nucleus, with diffuse hyperintensity of the putamen. The most characteristic neuropsychological feature was ideomotor apraxia. Neuropsychological and neuroradiological data are discussed in relation to the role of the basal nuclei and frontal cortex in the organization of movement.  相似文献

Silicone formulations based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were investigated by using a number of analytical techniques. Horizontal attenuated total reflectance Fourier‐transform infrared (HATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy studies have confirmed the stability of these materials towards photo‐oxidation. No significant oxygenated products were detected after 5000 h of accelerated photo‐ageing. However, by using thermoporosimetry, hardness measurements and densitometry, an important vulnerability of these formulations towards the cross‐linking reactions provoked by UV visible radiation was identified. Thermoporosimetry, using the solid‐solid cyclohexane transition as a textural probe, was also used to visualize the profile of cross‐linking inside the materials by calculation of the mesh size distribution in successive slices of 40 µm in thickness. Although RR interval variability appears to be an ideal method for assessing reinnervation after heart transplantation, it has been shown that respiratory sinus arrhythmia is caused by the mechanical effect of respiration on the right atrium. The neck-suction induces heart rate changes only by means of nervous reflex and its hemodynamic effect is local and hence appears as a useful method for assessing reinnervation. We tested the presence of autonomic reinnervation in 18 heart transplant recipients, compared to 12 donor-age-matched controls. We measured the power of RR interval low- (LF, around 0.1 Hz) and respiratory fluctuations (HF) before and during rhythmic neck-suction stimulation at 0.1 Hz and at a frequency (0.20 Hz) similar to, but distinct from, that of respiration (controlled at 0.25 Hz), before and during 0.04 mg/kg atropine infusion, using autoregressive spectral analysis of RR interval, respiration and neck pressure signals. The relationship between pairs of signals at each frequency was quantitatively assessed by bivariate coherence function. All transplanted subjects showed low-amplitude HF, related to respiration. Detectable LF (whose power was lower than in controls: 1.15 +/- 0.39 versus 6.08 +/- 0.27 1n-ms2, p < 0.001), non coherent with respiration, were present in 11/18 transplanted subjects, and correlated with months since transplantation (r = +0.59, p < 0.05). HF neck suction induced the presence of a 0.20 Hz fluctuation in 12/12 controls, distinct from and greater than the 0.25 Hz respiratory component (7.28 +/- 0.26 versus 6.69 +/- 0.74 1n-ms2, p < 0.01); this was not seen in any of the transplanted subjects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Reduction of fumonisin B₁ in corn grits by twin-screw extrusion   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the fate of fumonisins in flaking corn grits during twin‐screw extrusion by measuring fumonisin B1 (FB1) and its analogs with a mass balance approach. Food grade corn grits and 2 batches of grits contaminated with FB1 at 10 and 50 μg/g by Fusarium verticillioides M‐2552 were processed with or without glucose supplementation (10%, w/w) with a twin‐screw extruder. Extrusion reduced FB1 in contaminated grits by 64% to 72% without glucose and 89% to 94% with added glucose. In addition, extrusion alone resulted in 26% to 73% reduction in the levels of fumonisin B2 and fumonisin B3, while levels of both mycotoxins were reduced by >89% in extruded corn grits containing 10% glucose. Mass balance analysis showed that 38% to 46% of the FB1 species detected in corn extruded with glucose was N‐(deoxy‐D‐fructos‐1‐yl)‐FB1, while 23% to 37% of FB1 species detected in extruded corn grits with and without added glucose was bound to the matrix. It was also found that the hydrolyzed form of FB1 was a minor species in extruded corn grits with or without added glucose, representing <15% of the total FB1 species present. Less than 46% of FB1 originally present in corn grits could be detected in the fumonisin analogues measured in this study. Research is needed to identify the reaction products resulting from extrusion processing of fumonisin‐contaminated corn products. Practical Application: Twin‐screw extrusion is widely used in food industry for its versatility. This technology may reduce the level of fumonisins in corn particularly with added glucose.  相似文献

Films based on chitosan and xanthan gum were prepared using casting technique aiming to investigate the potential of these polymers as packaging materials. Six formulations of films were studied varying the proportion of chitosan and xanthan gum: 100:0 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C100XG0 film); 90:10 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C90XG10 film); 80:20 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C80XG20 film); 70:30 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C70XG30 film); 60:40 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C60XG40 film); and 50:50 (chitosan:xanthan gum, w/w, C50XG50 film). The total quantity of solids (chitosan and xanthan gum) in the filmogenic solution was 1.5 g per 100 mL of aqueous solution for all treatments, according to the proportion of each polymer. The films were evaluated by their functional groups, structural, thermal, morphological, physical, mechanical, and barrier properties. All films have presented endothermic peaks in the range of 122 to 175 °C and broad exothermic peaks above 200 °C, which were assigned to the melting temperature and thermal decomposition, respectively. These results demonstrated that films with xanthan gum have the highest Tm and ΔmH. The films containing higher content of xanthan gum show also the highest tensile strength and the lowest elongation. Xanthan gum addition did not affect the water vapor permeability, solubility, and moisture of films. This set of data suggests the formation of chitosan–xanthan complexes in the films.  相似文献

The gray-level absolute central moment of the first order provides ridges at gray-level discontinuities as well as a conventional gradient of Gaussian (GoG). A mass center b of the gray-level variability can also be associated to the first absolute central moment. When given a starting point p, vector b indicates the path which joins p to the nearest gray-level discontinuity as well as the gradient of the GoG magnitude. However, when the right configuration of the operator is chosen, vector b indicates a point which is closer to the discontinuity than p, regardless of the distance between p and the discontinuity. Therefore, when using vector b, gray-level discontinuities can be located with an iterative approach. In this paper, the edge detection properties of the first absolute central moment are compared with those of the GoG. The text was submitted by the authors in English. He is currently head of the Computer Vision Group at the CNR Institute of Clinical Physiology in Pisa, senior scientist for ESAOTE Spa, and he teaches a course on medical image processing at the Faculty of Applied Physics, University of Pisa. His research interests are cardiovascular image processing systems, contour tracking of moving deformable objects, and filtering schemes inspired by the early stages of biological vision systems. He has 80 scientific publications and his objective is the development of common projects with people who work in the area of biological vision for the purpose of both understanding biological vision and developing image processing systems. Francesco Faita was born on June 28, 1973, in La Spezia (Italy). In 2001, he graduated from Universitá degli Studi di Pisa obtaining the degree of electronic engineer. Since 2001, he has been working as a research fellow at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the Italian National Research Council. His main research interests lie in computer vision, in particular, in the field of ultrasound imaging. Elisabetta Bianchini was born in Lucca, Italy, in 1975. She received her degree in electronic engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2004. Since 2004, she has been a junior researcher at CNR, the Italian National Research Council, at the DSP lab in IFC (Institute of Clinical Physiology). Vincenzo Gemignani was born on October 10, 1969, in Viareggio (Italy). In 1995, he graduated from Universitá degli Studi di Pisa obtaining the degree of electronic engineer. Since 1996, he has been working as a research fellow at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the Italian National Research Council. This article presents a computer‐aided multistage methodology for the simulation of railway ballasts using the Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA – 2D domain) paradigm. The primary stage in this endeavor is the numerical generation of a synthetic sample by a “particle sizing and positioning” process followed by a “compaction” process. The synthetic samples of ballast are then visualized in the Computer‐Aided Design (CAD) environment. The outcomes of the simulation are analyzed by comparison with the results of an experimental investigation carried out using a methacrylate container in which real samples of railway ballast are formed. A test of model reliability is carried out between the aggregates number and the grading curves of the synthetic sample and the real one. A validation is therefore performed using the ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) nondestructive testing (NDT) method and the finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) simulation developed in a computer‐aided environment. The results prove the viability and the applicability of the proposed modeling for the assessment of railway ballast conditions.  相似文献

Microalgae contain high levels of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, and have found a useful application in enhancing the nutritional value of foods. These organisms can also synthesize long‐chain fatty acids in the form of triacylglycerols, such as α‐linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), linolenic acid (LA), γ‐linolenic acid (GLA) and arachidonic acid (AA). The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition and measure protein, carbohydrates, fibers, lipids as well as the fatty acids composition of six microalgae species with potential application in the food industry. Two freshwater species, Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis, and four marine species, Nannochloropsis oculata, Nannochloropsis gaditana, Porphyridium cruentum, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, were used in the experiments. Intracellular protein was the most prominent algal component (42.8–35.4 %), followed by carbohydrate + fiber (32.3–28.6 %), and lipids (15.6–5.3 %). N. gaditana is rich in saturated fatty acids, mainly palmitic acid (5.1 g/100 g), while the cells of S. platensis and C. vulgaris algae are abundant in GLA (1.9 g/100 g) and ALA (2.8 g/100 g) acids, respectively. P. cruentum differs from other algae, because it contains a large amount of AA (3.7 g/100 g). The marine microorganisms N. oculata and P. tricornutum are also a source of essential long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC‐PUFA‐?3), mainly composed of EPA and DHA. Our results suggest that the freshwater species C. vulgaris and S. platensis are attractive nutritional supplements because of their low fiber and high protein/carbohydrate contents, while the marine species P. tricornutum and N. oculata can enrich foods with LC‐PUFA‐ω3, because of their favorable ω3/ω6 ratio.  相似文献

α-Synuclein (α-syn) is a protein involved in neuronal degeneration. However, the family of synucleins has recently been demonstrated to be involved in the mechanisms of oncogenesis by selectively accelerating cellular processes leading to cancer. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal human cancers, with a specifically high neurotropism. The molecular bases of this biological behavior are currently poorly understood. Here, α-synuclein was analyzed concerning the protein expression in PDAC and the potential association with PDAC neurotropism. Tumor (PDAC) and extra-tumor (extra-PDAC) samples from 20 patients affected by PDAC following pancreatic resections were collected at the General Surgery Unit, University of Pisa. All patients were affected by moderately or poorly differentiated PDAC. The amount of α-syn was compared between tumor and extra-tumor specimen (sampled from non-affected neighboring pancreatic areas) by using in situ immuno-staining with peroxidase anti-α-syn immunohistochemistry, α-syn detection by using Western blotting, and electron microscopy by using α-syn-conjugated immuno-gold particles. All the methods consistently indicate that each PDAC sample possesses a higher amount of α-syn compared with extra-PDAC tissue. Moreover, the expression of α-syn was much higher in those PDAC samples from tumors with perineural infiltration compared with tumors without perineural infiltration.  相似文献
