This study investigated the inhibition effect of iron, cadmium and sulfide on the substrate utilization rate of sulfate reducing granular sludge. A series of batch experiments in a UASB reactor were conducted with different concentrations of iron (Fe2+, 4.0–8.5 mM), cadmium (Cd2+, 0.53–3.0 mM) and sulfide (4.2–10.6 mM), the reactor was fed with ethanol at 1 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L and sulfate to yield a COD/SO42− (g/g) ratio of 0.5. The addition of iron, up to a concentration of 8.1 mM, had a positive effect on the substrate utilization rate which increased 40% compared to the rate obtained without metal addition (0.25 g COD/g VSS-d). Nonetheless, iron concentration of 8.5 mM inhibited the specific substrate utilization rate by 57% compared to the substrate utilization rate obtained in the batch amended with 4.0 mM Fe2+ (0.44 g COD/g VSS-d). Cadmium had a negative effect on the specific substrate utilization rate at the concentrations tested; at 3.0 mM Cd2+ the substrate utilization rate was inhibited by 44% compared with the substrate utilization rate without metal addition. Cadmium precipitation with sulfide did not decrease the inhibition of cadmium on sulfate reduction. These results could have important practical implications mainly when considering the application of the sulfate reducing process to treat effluents with high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals such as iron and cadmium.  相似文献

Compatibility mechanisms between EVA and PP copolymers (C‐PP) blends have been studied as a function of the type of copolymer, using a heterophasic PP copolymer (PP‐EP) and a random PP copolymer (PP‐r‐EP), with similar ethylene content. The morphology and thermal and mechanical properties of PP/EVA blends with different levels of EVA containing 28% vinyl acetate (VA) were determined. The obtained results indicated compatibility for both systems showing interactions at the amorphous interfaces; however, this interaction was higher for the PP‐r‐EP/EVA, which showed a single glass transition temperature and changes in the PP crystalline fraction (changes in the fusion temperature and in the diffraction patterns). The evolution of the morphology from isolated spherical domains (20% EVA) to elongated shapes (40% EVA) was related to the observed changes in thermal and mechanical properties. The impact strength and deformation properties showed significant improvement with increasing EVA content above 40% where the highest values of elongation for the PP‐r‐EPand of impact strength for the PP‐EP were obtained. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Short glass fiber reinforced polymers are used in many different applications due to their good property profiles. These properties are directly correlated with the fiber length present in the final composite, which can be influenced through the process. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the influence of processing temperature and screw configuration in compounding on the properties of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene. On the one hand, the barrel temperature was varied between 180°C and 260°C and, on the other hand, four different screw configurations were applied using a standard temperature profile. Specimens were produced by injection molding, which were tested via mechanical characterization, density, and fiber length measurements as well as morphology through microscopical analysis. We found, that with higher barrel temperatures and screw configurations bringing lower shear into the melt the glass fiber length is preserved better, thus resulting in improved composite properties. Also the interfacial interaction is not influenced within the investigated parameters, as was checked via the application of a micromechanical model in composite strength. POLYM. ENG. This paper reports the results of a two year field monitoring exercise intended to investigate the pollution abatement capabilities of a novel system which offers an alternative to the, now well established, pervious pavement system as a source control device for stormwater management. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a live installation of a macro-pervious pavement system (MPPS) (operated as a visitors' car park at a prison in Central Scotland) in retaining and treating a range of pollutants which originate from automobile use or become concentrated on the parking surface from the wider environment. The MPPS is a sub-class of pervious pavement system where the vast majority of the surface is impermeable. It directs stormwater into a pervious sub surface storage/attenuation zone through a series of distinct infiltration points fast enough to prevent flooding during the design storm. In the particular system studied here the infiltration points consist of a network of oil/silt separation devices with extensive further pollutant retention/degradation provided during the passage of stormwater through the sub surface zone. Approximately 12 months after the car park was completed a sampling regime was instigated in which grab samples were collected at intervals from each of the three sub catchments whilst, simultaneously, samples were collected directly from the, pollutant retaining, infiltration devices. Through investigation of samples collected at the upstream end of the system, the retention of significant amounts of hydrocarbons and heavy metals in the initial collection devices has been illustrated and the analysis of effluent samples collected at the outlet points indicate that the system is capable of producing effluent which is of a standard comparable to that expected from a traditional pervious pavement system and is acceptable for direct release into a surface water receptor. The system offers the opportunity to accrue the benefits of a pervious pavement when the use of traditional paving surfaces is the preferred option.  相似文献

Cytarabine (Cyt) is an antimetabolite used primarily in the treatment of leukemia, and both immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions have been reported. We studied a 9-year-old girl with lymphoblastic leukemia, who developed three anaphylactoid reactions during Cyt treatment courses over a 1-year period. Three years later, Cyt was required again. Although a skin test was negative to Cyt at the concentration of 4 micrograms/ml, we decided on placebo-controlled administration of the drug. The Cyt was well tolerated, and urine values of N-methylhistamine showed no important variations throughout this period compared to those during the placebo administration. Skin tests carried out 14 days after the study were positive at the concentration of 4 micrograms/ml. The history of different episodes of allergic reactions to Cyt, the last one being the most severe, indicated the possible participation of an immediate hypersensitivity phenomenon, but because no studies had been carried out initially, we could not establish the presence of IgE antibodies. These results indicate that good tolerance existed after the control administration procedure. The long interval, 3 years, between the allergic episode and our protocol and the appearance of a positive skin test 14 days after the protocol indicated that the subject had lost sensitivity and become resensitized after the controlled administration procedure.  相似文献

Natural killer (NK) cells take up chylomicrons (CM), very low density (VLDL), low density (LDL), high density (HDL) and acetyl-modified low density (AcLDL) lipoproteins through different receptors, VLDL being the lipoprotein with the highest uptake and HDL the lowest. The uptake of LDL can be selectively blocked by the anti-LDL receptor, which does not affect the uptake of CM, VLDL, HDL and AcLDL. Although the uptake of lipoproteins assessed by flow cytometry using DiI is not very high, the lipoproteins are able to induce an increase in proliferative responses, VLDL, AcLDL and HDL being the most important ones with 12- and 17-fold increments, respectively. CM, VLDL and LDL at low concentrations increase NK cytotoxic activity, while HDL and AcLDL inhibit, in a dose-dependent fashion, the killing of NK cells against K562. These results suggest the presence of four different receptors that are responsible for the cytotoxic and proliferative responses observed.  相似文献

A large group of patients with suspected allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics was evaluated. A detailed clinical history, together with skin tests, RAST (radioallergosorbent test), and controlled challenge tests, was used to establish whether patients allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics had selective immediate allergic responses to amoxicillin (AX) or were cross-reacting with other penicillin derivatives. Skin tests were performed with benzylpenicilloyl-poly-L-lysine (BPO-PLL), benzylpenicilloate, benzylpenicillin (PG), ampicillin (AMP), and AX. RAST for BPO-PLL and AX-PLL was done. When both skin test and RAST for BPO were negative, single-blind, placebo-controlled challenge tests were done to ensure tolerance of PG or sensitivity to AX. A total of 177 patients were diagnosed as allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics. We selected the 54 (30.5%) cases of immediate AX allergy with good tolerance of PG. Anaphylaxis was seen in 37 patients (69%), the other 17 (31%) having urticaria and/or angioedema. All the patients were skin test negative to BPO; 49 of 51 (96%) were also negative to MDM, and 44 of 46 (96%) to PG. Skin tests with AX were positive in 34 (63%) patients. RAST was positive for AX in 22 patients (41%) and to BPO in just 5 (9%). None of the sera with negative RAST for AX were positive to BPO. Challenge tests with AX were performed in 23 subjects (43%) to establish the diagnosis of immediate allergic reaction to AX, and in 15 cases (28%) both skin test and RAST for AX were negative. PG was well tolerated by all 54 patients. We describe the largest group of AX-allergic patients who have tolerated PG reported so far. Diagnosis of these patients can be achieved only if specific AX-related reagents are employed. Further studies are necessary to determine the exact extent of this problem and to improve the efficacy of diagnostic methods.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of coatings with alginate (AL), pectin (PE), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or chitosan (CH) on microbial stability, physicochemical attributes, total phenolics and carotenoids content, antioxidant capacity and sensory properties of fresh‐cut mango during 14 days at 4 ± 1 °C. Coated fresh‐cut mango kept microbial counts below 6 logs CFU g?1, being CH‐coated fresh‐cut mango those that exhibited the lowest microbial counts (1 log CFU g?1) along entire storage. AL, PE and CMC coatings maintained yellow colour of fresh‐cut mango throughout storage. AL and CH coatings, which have different monomers in their chain, improved the content of antioxidant compounds in fresh‐cut mango as related to uncoated. AL‐coated fresh‐cut mangoes were the toughest, among those coated, during 14 days. The highest consumer acceptance was achieved in AL (90.2%) coated fresh‐cut mango. CH would be the most suitable coating to extend the quality of fresh‐cut mango throughout storage.  相似文献
