A review of quality and biological treatment of landfill leachate is presented. Conventional ex‐situ treatment normally demands multistage process treatment schemes, which may encompass both aerobic and anaerobic technologies alongside chemical precipitation and/or oxidation. This is to be contrasted with the more recent membrane bioreactor technology, which generally demands much reduced pre‐ and post‐treatment and has a much reduced footprint compared with conventional biotreatment. Results are summarised in terms of the key determinant of COD removal for waters characterised in terms of BOD/COD ratio and age. Process operation is characterised with respect to COD strength and loading rate, hydraulic retention time and number of individual unit operations. Using the Foreman effective mass Hamiltonian, the electronic structure of the valence band and the interband dipole matrix elements in In/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As-In/sub y/Ga/sub 1-y/As/sub z/P/sub 1-z/ quantum-well optical amplifiers are calculated, taking into account the valence band mixing and the biaxial strain. The optical field of the amplified pulse is calculated by solving the wave equation with the computed polarization as a source term. A novel wavelet transform is introduced in analyzing the pulse chirp imposed by the optical amplifier. In the linear propagation regime, the spectrum of the amplified pulse can be either red-shifted or blue-shifted with respect to its initial center frequency, depending on the local gain dispersion spanned by the pulse spectrum. The output pulse shape can be retarded or advanced, depending on the local gain and group velocity dispersion. Furthermore, an initially unchirped pulse centered in the tail of the gain spectrum is significantly reshaped after propagating 600 /spl mu/m, and its spectrum is broadened and distorted considerably. In the spectral region where both gain and group velocity change rapidly, the frequency chirp for a linearly chirped input pulse is significantly weakened after propagation.  相似文献

Land mobile satellite (LMS) systems require constellations of multiple satellites to compensate for the large blockage probabilities suffered in urban areas. An approximate methodology based on the street masking function (MKF) or mask concept is presented for the evaluation of system availability. MKFs are graphical representations of the angles (azimuths and elevations) for which a satellite is visible from the terminal's location in the street. MKFs can also be used in the evaluation of second order statistics such as durations of fades or connections. In this paper, the applicability of the mask concept is demonstrated by performing a study of the probability of successful call completion in a LEO‐based satellite telephony service. We have used a human leukemia cell line that, after homologous recombination knockout of the gp91-phox subunit of the phagocyte respiratory-burst oxidase cytochrome b-558, mimics chronic granulomatous disease (X-CGD) to study the role of oxygen radicals in apoptosis. Camptothecin (CPT), a topoisomerase I inhibitor, induced significantly more apoptosis in PLB-985 cells than in X-CGD cells. Sensitivity to CPT was enhanced after neutrophilic differentiation, but was lost after monocytic differentiation. No difference between the two cell lines was observed after treatment with other apoptosis inducers, including etoposide, ultraviolet radiation, ionizing radiation, hydrogen peroxide, or 7-hydroxystaurosporine. After granulocytic differentiation of both cell lines, CPT still induced apoptosis, suggesting independence from replication in fully differentiated and growth-arrested cells. Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (an antioxidant inhibitor of NF-kappaB) and catalase partially inhibited CPT-induced DNA fragmentation in granulocytic-differentiated PLB-985 cells, but had no effect in X-CGD cells. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that reactive oxygen intermediates were generated in CPT-treated PLB-985 cells. These data indicate that oxygen radicals generated by NADPH oxidase may contribute directly or indirectly to CPT-induced apoptosis in human leukemia and in neutrophilic-differentiated cells.  相似文献

General filter architecture using co- and counterpropagation signals are studied. A specific configuration based on a Sagnac loop within a ring resonator is analyzed. Novel tuning, apart from conventional tuning, is achieved by changing the coupling ratio of a coupler through the adjustment of the equivalent loop length. Full equations describing the filter behavior in passive and active configurations, and simple closed-form formulas to compute the tuning, tolerance, and full-width at half-maximum are reported. The performance of these devices is discussed for their application as selective or channel-dropping ultra-narrow-band filters. The effect of losses and their dispersion properties are also discussed. These devices can be conveniently implemented, using silicon- or InP-integrated optic technology, for they have high free spectral ranges.  相似文献

In this paper, PWM-PD multiple output dc/dc converters are presented. Operation analysis and power block design are shown. Furthermore, a small-signal model is developed for the PWM-PD multiple output dc/dc converters working in continuous conduction mode. The control-block is presented and the closed-loop circuit performances, such as the line, load and cross regulation, are obtained analytically. Finally, experimental results for a PWM-PD converter, with three fully regulated outputs and with transformer, are shown.  相似文献

Optical fiber sensor networks are evolving rapidly. They are used because of the inert nature of optical fibers allowing no electromagnetic interference and safe applications in inflammable atmospheres; other relevant characteristics are their low weights and wide bandwidths as a transmission medium. In any case, it is very interesting to have specific components such as optical routers for selecting a certain path in a network with no optical to electrical and electrical to optical conversions. In this paper, we propose an all-optical router based on liquid crystals, polarizers, and a spatial split polarization beam splitter. The implemented device is designed to operate with visible light and it has been tested with plastic optical fibers. It has a crosstalk of 14 dB between selected ON channels and nonoperative OFF channels and 11-dB insertion losses. An average switch time of 100 ms is measured. The device checks the optical power level in each channel and, in case of failure, automatically switches to an operative channel while an alarm is activated.  相似文献

Xenopus laevis oocytes have been used extensively during the past decade to express and study neurotransmitter receptors of various origins and subunit composition and also to express and study receptors altered by site-specific mutations. Interpretations of the effects of structural differences on receptor mechanisms were, however, hampered by a lack of rapid chemical reaction techniques suitable for use with oocytes. Here we describe flow and photolysis techniques, with 2-ms and 100-microseconds time resolution, respectively, for studying neurotransmitter receptors in giant (approximately 20-microns diameter) patches of oocyte membranes, using muscle and neuronal acetylcholine receptors as examples. With these techniques, we find that the muscle receptor in BC3H1 cells and the same receptor expressed in oocytes have comparable kinetic properties. This finding is in contrast to previous studies and raises questions regarding the interpretations of the many studies of receptors expressed in oocytes in which an insufficient time resolution was available. The results obtained indicate that the rapid reaction techniques described here, in conjunction with the oocyte expression system, will be useful in answering many outstanding questions regarding the structure and function of diverse neurotransmitter receptors.  相似文献
