Material database This paper describes a new materials database named SWDB. SWDB is the German abbreviation for „Sollwert-Werkstoff-Datenbank”︁ and should be read as „Specified-Materials-Database”︁. SWDB is a state of the art user friendly materials database which provides adequate information on standardized and not standardized materials characteristics of solid materials from ferrous and non-ferrous metals and other metallic alloys currently used in engineering practice. Apart from the chemical composition and mechanical-technological properties of metallic materials based on various standards and specifications, the database includes reference to a large number of possible alternative materials in a concise and pregnant form which is transparent and easily accessible for application engineers. The material data are composed on the basis of an absolutely new structured model and are shown as a function of the specified material, product shape, dimension, delivery condition and sampling. SWDB includes additional information on physical properties as well as exhaustive information on heat treatment, hot and cold forming, weldability and hints for application. The SWDB has a dual character: on the one hand it can be operated as an individual and independent database, on the other hand as a satellite database to support the corrosion database within the information system on corrosion and protection, „CORIS”︁.     

Ischemic neurologic event in a child as a result of ventricular septal aneurysm

Aneurysm of the interventricular septum without a shunt was found by means of transthoracic echocardiography in a 6-year-old boy with acute hemiparesis. Until the time of the incident, he had been healthy. The aneurysmal sac contained 2 clots, presumably resulting in the ischemic cerebral infarct. On the basis of the echocardiographic scan, successful surgery was performed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing such dramatic sequelae of interventricular septal aneurysm.     

Response of the primate secretory endometrium to subchronic hypercortisolemia

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of subchronic and moderate hypercortisolism on the secretory endometrium of the cynomolgus monkey. METHODS: Osmotic pumps containing hydrocortisone phosphate (HP) were implanted subcutaneously in each monkey on the first day of the menstrual cycle; each monkey also received pumps containing saline in another cycle. Blood was obtained three times per week and urine was collected daily for hormone analyses. Endometriectomy was performed 13 +/- 1 days after the serum estradiol (E2) peak in each study cycle. RESULTS: Infusion of HP elevated serum cortisol levels by an average of 70%. Mean serum progesterone (P) levels were decreased by 50% during the secretory phase of HP-treatment cycles by comparison with self-control cycles (P < .01); as a result, the mean endometrial glycogen concentration was reduced by 30% (P < .05) and the activity of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase was decreased by 70% (P < .05). Serum E2 levels were not consistently elevated by HP treatment, but cytosolic estrogen receptor levels of the endometrium were decreased by 50% (P < .01), indicating increased estrogenic stimulation. Histologic development of the secretory endometrium was retarded, but the length of the secretory phase was not affected by the treatment. CONCLUSION: A moderate elevation of serum cortisol levels over one menstrual cycle consistently produced a reduction in serum P and a hypoprogestogenic-hyperestrogenic response of the secretory endometrium in the cynomolgus monkey.     

Complaints and complaining: Functions, antecedents, and consequences.

Although everyone complains at least occasionally, surprisingly little research attention has been devoted to the topic of complaining. In this review, complaints are defined as expressions of dissatisfaction, whether subjectively experienced or not, for the purpose of venting emotions or achieving intrapsychic goals, interpersonal goals, or both. A theoretical model of complaining is presented that examines the relationship between self-focus, the perceived utility of complaining, and complaining. In addition, the article examines variables related to people's dissatisfaction and complaining thresholds (i.e., negative affect, locus of control, self-presentational concerns, age, and gender), functions of complaining, and intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences of complaining. On normal impact of an infinite elastic-plastic thin-walled plate by a finite elastic rod

The problem of the transverse collision of a finite circular cylinder (flat-ended metal projectile) of length L and radius R₀, moving with the initial velocity V₀, with an immobile thin infinite plate, is considered. It is assumed that the plate is in a pure shear state. The one-dimensional waves both in the plate (cylindrical elastic-plastic waves) and in cylinder (plane longitudinal elastic waves) are investigated. Graphs of the peak dimensionless shear stress at the point of impact versus four non-dimensional quantities representing the material and geometrical properties of the plate and the projectile, are presented. These graphs allow the projectile speed just sufficient to initiate ejection of the slug to be estimated.     

Effect of chronic experimental poisoning with benzene and ethylene vapors on the circulatory system

To examine the content and the composition of free amino acids in the intraluminal fluid of rat epididymis, the fluids were obtained by light pressure on the dissected tissues. The amount of the total free amino acids in the pressed fluid from the caput epididymis was significantly higher than those of the cauda epididymis and the testis. Glu and Gln were predominant amino acids in the caput, and their amounts occupied more than half of the total ninhydrin reactive compounds. Such a high concentration of Glu and Gln was not observed either in the cauda or in the testis. Castration decreased Glu and increased Gln in amount. Testosterone treatment to castrated animals did not restore Glu and Gln contents in the pressed fluid from the caput epididymis to the level observed in intact rats completely. Therefore, it was assumed that a large amount of Glu in the caput was due to many factors; secretion and metabolism of epithelial cells of the gland which might be regulated by androgen, inflow of rete testis fluid, and sperm metabolism of amino acids in the epididymis. The results obtained from the caput epididymis to which the efferent duct of the testis was ligated also supported this interpretation.     

Pyrolysis of polystyrene-poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4 phenyleneoxide) mixtures and graft copolymers

The influence of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenyleneoxide) [PPO] on the thermal degradation of polystyrene [PS] has been investigated over the whole range of admixed homopolymer contents and for selected compositions of grafted copolymers of PS chains on PPO. The styrene yield on pyrolysis at 350–650°C was measured. The results are discussed in terms of the miscibility of the system and its influence on the course of pyrolysis, i.e., on participation of competitive processes in the overall mechanism of PS degradation. On the basis of the data, regression equations for the dependence of styrene concentration on the composition of the mixture were determined and the results show that the styrene content at pyrolysis near 500°C does not depend on the molecular interaction of the PS-PPO system. It is demonstrated that pyrolysis and gas chromatography can be used for determination of the composition of polymer mixtures and of copolymers.
