Procedure and Setup for the Investigation of Composite Materials in Torsion at Temperatures up to 3300 K

A procedure and a setup are proposed for the investigation of strength properties of composite materials under torsion at temperatures of up to 3300 K in vacuum and in an oxidizing or inert medium. The setup is fitted with a system for the program heating of specimens to realize conditions that are close to the working conditions of the material. This makes it possible to carry out tests at a heating rate of about 500 deg/s with a uniform temperature field maintained along the specimen length.     

Effect of quantum dot shape dispersion on their joint density of states

An original approach to evaluating the influence of the distribution of quantum dots with respect to their shapes on the joint density of states is proposed. Expressions that describe the shift and inhomogeneous broadening of the main spectral band of luminescence depending on the coefficient of modulation of the surface shape of quantum dots are obtained.     

Relaxation of nonequilibrium nanoparticle velocities in liquid medium

An optical speckle correlation method has been used to measure the velocities of nonequilibrium nanoparticles suspended in a liquid medium. It is established that the excess velocity of nanoparticles upon the irradiation of their suspension by high-power laser pulses decreases with the time according to a law that is close to t ⁻¹ and the characteristic relaxation time reaches several dozen milliseconds.     

The semantic web: yet another hip?

Currently, computers are changing from single, isolated devices into entry points to a worldwide network of information exchange and business transactions called the World Wide Web (WWW). For this reason, support in data, information, and knowledge exchange has become a key issue in current computer technology. The success of the WWW has made it increasingly difficult to find, access, present, and maintain the information required by a wide variety of users. In response to this problem, many new research initiatives and commercial enterprises have been set up to enrich available information with machine processable semantics. This semantic web will provide intelligent access to heterogeneous, distributed information, enabling software products (agents) to mediate between user needs and the information sources available. This paper summarizes ongoing research in the area of the semantic web, focusing especially on ontology technology.     

Dual relationships between therapist and client: A national study of psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers.

4,800 psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers were surveyed (return rate?=?49%) to examine attitudes and practices regarding dual professional roles, social involvements, financial involvements, and incidental involvements. Half of the Ss rated the degree to which each behavior was ethical; the other half reported how often they engaged in each behavior. A majority believed dual role behaviors to be unethical under most conditions; most reported that they had rarely or never engaged in the behaviors. 10 factors (therapist gender, profession, age, experience, marital status, region of residence, client gender, practice setting, theoretical orientation, and practice locale) were examined for their relation to the beliefs and behaviors. A higher proportion of male than of female therapists were perpetrators of sexual and nonsexual dual relationships. The professions did not differ among themselves in terms of (a) sexual intimacies with clients before or after termination, (b) nonsexual dual professional roles, (c) social involvements, or (d) financial involvements with patients. 10 specific training implications are discussed in light of the exploitive and clinically harmful nature of dual relationships. A machine and method for strength tests of composite materials at temperatures up to 3300 K

A machine for tension, compression, and bend testing of carbon-carbon composite materials at temperatures up to 3300 K in vacuum, air, and an inert atmosphere is described.
