Fourier spectral method can achieve exponential accuracy both on the approximation level and for solving partial differential equations if the solutions are analytic. For a linear PDE with discontinuous solutions, Fourier spectral method will produce poor point-wise accuracy without post-processing, but still maintains exponential accuracy for all moments against analytic functions. In this note we assess the accuracy of Fourier spectral method applied to nonlinear conservation laws through a numerical case study. We have found out that the moments against analytic functions are no longer very accurate. BACKGROUND: Carotid angioplasty (CA) has been suggested to be a safer and more cost-effective alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in the management of symptomatic severe internal carotid artery (ICA) disease. METHODS: The study was conducted as a prospective consecutive randomized trial of CEA versus CA for symptomatic severe ICA disease in a university teaching hospital. All patients were assessed before and after surgery by a neurologist. The study consisted of 23 patients with focal carotid territory symptoms and severe ICA stenosis (> 70%) who were randomized to either CEA or CA. However, only 17 had received their allocated treatment before trial suspension. CEA with patching or CA with stenting were used as interventions. The main outcome measures were death or disabling or nondisabling stroke within 30 days. RESULTS: All 10 CEA operations proceeded without complication, but 5 of the 7 patients who underwent CA had a stroke (P=.0034), 3 of which were disabling at 30 days. CONCLUSIONS: After referral, the Data Monitoring Committee invoked the stopping rule and the trial was suspended. The investigators and the Ethics Committee subsequently concluded that the trial could not be restarted--even in an amended format-primarily because of problems with informed consent. We review many of the ethical dilemmas encountered in the performance of this study. If future trials do suggest a selected role for CA, it is essential that both the inclusion and the exclusion criteria are fully documented. 相似文献

A high-fidelity “hybrid” telerobotic simulator suitable for telemanipulation rehearsal, supervisory control, operator training, and human factors performance evaluation has been developed. The simulator is capable of operation in the conventional rate-control, master/slave control, and a data-driven preprogrammed mode of operation. It has teach/playback capability, which allows an operator to generate joint commands for real-time teleoperation. For high-level task execution, the operator selects a specific task from a set of menu options and the simulator automatically generates the required joint commands. In this article, an object detection strategy that has been implemented in the simulator for more realistic telemanipulation is presented. The object detection technique is based on the use of superellipsoids, which have a convenient inside-outside function for interference testing. The technique, which treats both moving and stationary objects in a consistent manner, has proved to be easy to implement and optimize for real-time applications. The object detection feature is also used to provide visual feedback as a low-cost force reflection strategy. 相似文献

In this article, a fast procedure for numerical manipulator inverse kinematics computation and singularities prevention is presented. The approach is based upon solving a linear system and automatically calculating some parameters. These parameters are properly used in either one of two original schemes that are also proposed to induce robustness to the pseudoinverse. Furthermore, here it is also shown how to properly implement one of these schemes in conjunction with a recently developed approach for the singularities prevention of redundant manipulators. The resultant algorithms are tested on the simulation of a planar redundant manipulator. From the results obtained, it is observed that the proposed approach compares favorably with the approaches using a Gaussian elimination procedure and with pseudoinverse robustness based on a manipulability measure. 相似文献

Forearm rotation affects grip strength. In a study with 40 volunteers, an overall decrease in grip strength was observed when the forearm rotated from pronation to supination. In males grip strength in pronation was significantly lower compared to the neutral and supinated position, with the wrist free as well as in an immobilized wrist position. In females this was only observed with a free wrist position, but with the wrist immobilized, the grip strength was higher in supination compared to neutral and pronation. 相似文献

Picrotoxin (50 microM) elicited rhythmic synchronized bursting in CA3 pyramidal cells in guinea pig hippocampal slices. Addition of the selective group I metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) agonist (S)-3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine (25 microM) elicited an increase in burst frequency. This was soon followed by a slowly progressive increase in burst duration (BD), converting the brief 250-520 ms picrotoxin-induced synchronized bursts into prolonged discharges of 1-5 s in duration. BD was significantly increased within 60 min and reached a maximum after 2-2.5 h of agonist exposure. The protein synthesis inhibitors anisomycin (15 microM) or cycloheximide (25 microM) significantly impeded the mGluR-mediated development of the prolonged bursts; 90-120 min of agonist application failed to elicit the expected burst prolongation. By contrast, the mGluR-mediated enhancement of burst frequency progressed unimpeded. Furthermore, protein synthesis inhibitors had no significant effect on the frequency or duration of fully developed mGluR-induced prolonged discharges. These results suggest that the group I mGluR-mediated prolongation of synchronized bursts has a protein synthesis-dependent mechanism. 相似文献

Testin is a testosterone-responsive Sertoli cell secretory product. In the present study, we demonstrated that the amount of testin secreted by Sertoli cells in vitro was comparable with several other Sertoli cell secretory products. However, virtually no testin was found in the luminal fluid and cytosols of the testis and epididymis when the intercellular junctions were not previously disrupted, suggesting that secreted testin may be reabsorbed by testicular cells in vivo. Studies using Sertoli cells with and without a cell surface cross-linker and radioiodination in conjunction with immunoprecipitation illustrated the presence of two polypeptides of 28 and 45 kDa, which constitute a binding protein complex that anchors testin onto the cell surface. The 28- and 45-kDa peptide appear to be residing on and inside the cell surface, respectively. Immunogold EM studies illustrated testin was abundantly localized on the Sertoli cell side of the ectoplasmic specialization (a modified adherens junction) surrounding developing spermatids. In contrast, very few testin gold particles were found at the site of inter-Sertoli tight junctions. When the inter-Sertoli tight junctions were formed or disrupted, no significant change in testin expression was noted. This is in sharp contrast to the disruption of Sertoli-germ cell junctions, which is accompanied by a surge in testin expression. Several endogenous oscillators determine circadian rhythms. One, light-entrained, is in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the others, food-entrained, are in unknown sites. To determine how the hypothalamic ventromedial nuclei (VMN) and feeding affect rhythms, we compared nocturnally active rats fed either ad libitum or for 2 hr/d during light [restricted feeding (RF)] and either with or without colchicine-induced disruption of VMN. We measured rhythms in temperature, locomotor activity, feeding, drinking, corticosterone, and the numbers of cells expressing c-Fos in light/dark in hypothalamic nuclei, the suprachiasmatic nuclei, and two major SCN targets, the subparaventricular zone (sPVNz) and paraventricular thalamus (pvTHAL). c-Fos cells were always light > dark in SCN, whereas the VMN and sPVNz lacked light/dark differences except after RF and RF plus VMN disruption, respectively. Controls fed ad libitum had high-amplitude rhythms and, generally, c-Fos cells dark > light. In RF controls, a c-Fos pattern dark > light occurred in VMN; generally, c-Fos cell numbers increased elsewhere maintaining dark > light. By contrast, levels of corticosterone peaked before food. In rats fed ad libitum, VMN with colchicine markedly reduced rhythm amplitudes, not phase. c-Fos patterns were abolished except in pvTHAL and SCN. In RF, VMN disruption blocked corticosterone and light/dark c-Fos patterns in all nuclei but produced a pattern in the sPVNz like SCN. We conclude that VMN amplify rhythmic output from the SCN, and the RF-induced rhythm in VMN enhances c-Fos activity driven by the SCN. The VMN may contain a food-entrained oscillator, and the sPVNz may integrate output from several oscillators. 相似文献
