The electrooptic switching properties of injection-coupled coherent two-dimensional grating-surface-emitting (GSE) laser arrays with multiple gain sections and quantum-well active layers are discussed. Within such an array of injection-coupled GSE lasers, a single gain section can act as an intracavity saturable loss element that can modulate the output of the entire array. Manganese (Mn) in a drinking water distribution system can cause multiple aesthetic problems including discolored water and fouling or scaling of fixtures. Oxidation and solid-liquid separation processes are typically employed at a treatment plant to limit the concentration of Mn entering the distribution system. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is commonly used to oxidize the manganous ion (Mn+2) to manganese oxide (MnO2). In this study, a mechanistic model is applied to the oxidation of manganese at a treatment plant. Literature kinetic constants (determined with artificial water) are compared with the values obtained for the plant's natural water. The solution and surface phase oxidation rate constants determined with the natural water are two to six orders of magnitude less than those determined with the artificial water. The reduced oxidation rate in the natural water is attributed to the presence of dissolved organic matter, which can exert a competitive demand on the oxidant and interfere with the oxidation by complexing Mn+2. The development of an additional rate constant for the oxidation of dissolved organic matter improves the modeling results for KMnO4 concentration versus time, but only marginally explains the Mn+2 oxidation rate differences. 相似文献

In this research, the authors test a model in which the regulatory focus of employees at work mediates the influence of leadership on employee behavior. In a nationally representative sample of 250 workers who responded over 2 time periods, prevention focus mediated the relationship of initiating structure to in-role performance and deviant behavior, whereas promotion focus mediated the relationship of servant leadership to helping and creative behavior. The results indicate that even though initiating structure and servant leadership share some variance in explaining other variables, each leadership style incrementally predicts disparate outcomes after controlling for the other style and dispositional tendencies. A new regulatory focus scale, the Work Regulatory Focus (WRF) Scale, also was developed and initially validated for this study. Implications for the results and the WRF Scale are discussed. We used Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the sensitivity of tag-recovery mortality estimates to inaccuracies in tag shedding, handling mortality, and tag reporting. The data-generating model used in the simulations assumed that tagging was conducted annually for 4 years with tag recoveries occurring over a 4-year period. Several different combinations of instantaneous fishing (F) and natural (M) mortality were evaluated in the simulations. The data-generating model additionally assumed that immediate-shedding and handling-mortality rates equaled 2.5% and 0%, respectively, and that chronic shedding was a sigmoidal function of months since tagging. Two spatial patterns of reporting rates were considered—one where reporting was a function of distance from the tagging site and one where reporting was a random generation across the study area. Maximum likelihood estimates of F and M were calculated from the recovery of tags from the data-generating model under different assumed rates of tag shedding, handling mortality, and tag reporting. We found that assumptions about reporting rates resulted in the most variability in mortality estimates regardless of which combination of F and M was evaluated, with assumptions about chronic shedding also contributing substantially to overall variability in mortality estimates for most mortality combinations. Assumptions about immediate tag shedding and handling mortality had relatively minor effects on mortality estimates compared to reporting rate. When planning a tag-recovery study, care should be taken to ensure that chronic shedding and tag-reporting rates are accurately measured, as inaccurate measurements in these factors can result in significant errors in mortality estimates. 相似文献

The present paper grounds the linguistic categorization of space in aspects of visual perception; specifically, the structure of projective spatial terms such as above are grounded in the process of attention and in vector-sum coding of overall direction. This is formalized in the attentional vector-sum (AVS) model. This computational model accurately predicts linguistic acceptability judgments for spatial terms, under a variety of spatial configurations. In 7 experiments, the predictions of the AVS model are tested against those of 3 competing models. The results support the AVS model and disconfirm its competitors. The authors conclude that the structure of linguistic spatial categories can be partially explained in terms of independently motivated perceptual processes. Formaldehyde-induced and glyoxylic-acid-induced fluorescence histochemistry permits the tissue localization of catecholamines in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), and in culture. Counterstains such as ethidium bromide provide excellent background identification of specific innervated regions in both the CNS and the periphery. Use of fluorescence histochemistry with immunocytochemistry can elucidate catecholamine-peptide relationships. Gelatin-ink perfusion used with fluorescence histochemistry permits the investigation of neuro-vascular relationships and documentation of vascular and parenchymal compartmentation of innervation. Combined use of fluorescence histochemistry and retrograde tracing methods demonstrates the specific cellular sources of innervation of target regions. Micropunch neurochemical analysis provides quantitative data for correlation with fluorescence histochemistry within a target region of innervation, and micro-spectrofluorometric analysis provides a semi-quantitative evaluation of the amount of fluorophore within a target region or within specific subcellular compartments such as the cell body or terminals. 相似文献

This paper documents the results of an experimental study conducted to demonstrate the capabilities of multiple magnetorheological (MR) devices for seismic control of civil engineering structures. A six-story test structure in the Washington University Structural Control and Earthquake Engineering Lab is considered, and four parallel-plate, shear-mode MR dampers are used to control this test structure. Two control devices are installed in the test structure between the base and first floor, and two are installed between the first floor and second floor. A phenomenological model of the shear mode MR damper is proposed and verified. A nonlinear system identification method, appropriate for multi-input/multi-output systems, is used to develop a model of the integrated structural system. Experimental transfer function data corresponding to one system input are used to update the eigenvalues of an analytical model. Two semiactive control algorithms, including a Lyapunov algorithm and a clipped-optimal algorithm, are considered. An El Centro earthquake example is used to disturb the system at three amplitude levels. The results indicate that high performance levels can be achieved, and the responses of the semiactive system are significantly better than that of comparable passive systems. 相似文献
