Oxygen injection has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated as an effective control measure for limiting the rate of heat release and altering the rate of polymerization in emulsion processes. A detailed mathematical model has been previously developed to describe the system behavior with and without oxygen injection. A simple lab scale apparatus was constructed and run extensively. Only trace quantities of oxygen are needed to inhibit the reaction completely. The facile response makes this method attractive for fast temperature control. However, because of the rapid penetration of dissolved oxygen into the polymer particles, growing radical chains are terminated prematurely, lowering product molecular weights. To minimize this detrimental effect, pulsed oxygen control is used and extensive experimental work was performed to determine the effects of controller set points on molecular weight. Moderate oxygen flows and moderate set point temperatures are found to give the optimal response without significant lowering of the final molecular weight. Injected quantities agree well with the order-of-magnitude sparging calculations needed to completely stop initiation. However, complete agreement between model simulations and experimental results was not reached due to an unmeasured loss of monomer from the reactor. Chain transfer to monomer is found to be important in modeling the polymer molecular weight. It has, however, a negligible effect on the reaction rate.  相似文献

The mechanical fracture strength and toughness of short-fibre composites, injection moulded from compounds of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) containing 10 and 30% (by weight) (w/o) glass, have been investigated and the dependence upon matrix hydrolytic stability determined. Mouldings have been characterised by several physical techniques to evaluate molecular weight, degradation rates, crystallinity and morphology, whilst time-dependent gravimetric data were derived to quantify sorption kinetics and allow comparisons with theoretical reaction rates to be made. During melt processing, PET is hydrolysed extremely rapidly by traces of moisture (<0.02w/o). yet the inherent strength of moulded composites declines significantly only below an apparently critical molecular weight. However, on long-term humid ageing in hot water, impact behaviour especially is rendered more complex by simultaneous crystallisation, molecular reorder and losses of interfacial bond strength.  相似文献

This article explains the basic issues that are facing the global community regarding the emission of carbon dioxide (CO/sub 2/) gas that is degrading our environment and, most significantly, the environment of generations to come. This article deals with the current state of a potential international agreement to curtail greenhouse gases and the subsequent underlying issues. A theory suggests that apparent reluctance to agree to an international treaty by the United States is directly tied to the process of electric utility reforms. The proposed Kyoto Treaty is explained as well as the consequences of its implementation. The current facts surrounding electric utility generation and CO/sub 2/ gas emissions are explained, as are some mitigation efforts.  相似文献

The brushless doubly fed induction machine (BDFIM) has been extensively researched for approximately 30 years, but a related machine [the brushless doubly fed reluctance machine (BDFRM)], has not. This was mainly due to the fact that reluctance rotor designs were not capable of generating saliency ratios large enough to make the BDFRM competitive with other machines. However, recent developments in reluctance rotors, spurred on by research into synchronous reluctance machines, has resulted in high saliency ratio rotors that are economic to build. This, together with the promise of higher efficiency and simpler control compared to the BDFIM, means that further investigation of the BDFRM is warranted. A relatively limited amount of work to date has been published on the BDFRM. This paper attempts to fill this void by presenting a theoretical analysis of some of the important control properties of the ideal BDFRM.  相似文献

Factors affecting adsorption of polygalacturonase (PG) in recycled cucumber pickle brine by an alumino‐silicate clay (Pure‐Flo B80) were investigated. Adsorption of PG by Pure‐Flo B80 was affected by concentration of clay, NaCl, pH and mixing time. Mixing 5 mg clay/mL of brine for one hour eliminated PG activity in most commercial recycled pickle brines that were tested. Maximum adsorption occurred in brines from pH 3 to 4.5. NaCl greatly enhanced PG and total protein adsorption capacity of the clay. Adsorption of PG did not appear to be affected by source of the commercial brines. Spent clay adsorption was restored by washing the clay in alkaline (pH 12) solution. The results demonstrated that the salt and pH conditions of commercial recycled pickle brines were favorable for adsorption of PG by Pure‐Flo B80 and that the clay could be reused after treatment.  相似文献
