Uncontaminated and As-contaminated fronds of Pteris vittata L., an As-hyperaccumulator fern used to phytoextract As from contaminated soils and water, were converted by sub-critical water (300 °C, 25 Pa) and supercritical water (400 °C, 25 Pa) treatments. Frond biomass was reduced between 70 and 77%. Compared to sub-critical conditions, supercritical conditions decreased C and inorganic contents in both the solid and liquid phases for uncontaminated and contaminated fronds and promoted CH4 formation. Higher As, Fe and Zn contents in contaminated fronds promoted decreasing C contents and the formations of cyclopentenones and benzenediols in the liquid phase. Al, Fe, P, Zn and Ca mainly remained in the solid phase whereas As and S were transferred to the liquid phase for both phytomasses. As the temperature increased from 300 °C to 400 °C, the concentrations of cyclopentenones and phenols in the liquid phase rose while those of guaiacols and other compounds decreased for both phytomasses. Arsenic in the liquid phase was removed by sorption on hydrous iron oxide.  相似文献

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the most frequently isolated bacteria from milk samples in several studies worldwide. Despite their relative frequency, specific measures aiming at their control are not well established. One possible measure to include in a control programme is lactational antimicrobial treatment. The decision to perform such treatment, as well as other actions on farm, should be based on the likelihood of financial return. A deterministic model was used to evaluate whether performing an antimicrobial treatment during the lactation for quarters infected with CNS was financially justifiable. Input variables for the impact of CNS on udder health were based on a previous study by the same authors and on available literature on the subject. Prices included in the model were based on 2009/2010 conditions in Portugal. The average result per antimicrobial treated quarter was a net loss of ?8·74. Performing a sensitivity analysis to evaluate how systematic variation of the input variables of the model would lead to outcome changes showed that variation in input variables nearly always led to a negative outcome, with the greatest variation in losses observed for variation in the length of treatment and milk withdrawal period (-?6·26 to -?8·49). The situations in which a net benefit was to be expected included the bulk tank somatic cell count decreasing to a level corresponding to a premium payment or to penalties being avoided, and the prevention of transmission of CNS in the milking parlour when the possibility of transmission was at its highest level. For most situations, lactational treatment of CNS subclinical mastitis was not financially justifiable.  相似文献

Dust is found throughout the universe and plays an important role for a wide range of astrophysical phenomena. In recent years, new IR facilities have provided powerful new data for understanding these phenomena. However, interpretation of these data is often complicated by a lack of complementary information about the optical properties of astronomically relevant materials. The Optical Properties of Astronomical Silicates with Infrared Techniques (OPASI-T) program at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is designed to provide new high-quality laboratory data from which we can derive the optical properties of astrophysical dust analogues. This program makes use of multiple instruments, including new equipment designed and built specifically for this purpose. The suite of instruments allows us to derive optical properties over a wide wavelength range, from the near-IR through the millimeter, also providing the capability for exploring how these properties depend upon the temperature of the sample. In this paper, we discuss the overall structure of the research program, describe the new instruments that have been developed to meet the science goals, and demonstrate the efficacy of these tools.  相似文献

Emerging evidence indicates that excessive exposure to manganese (Mn) during the prenatal period and early childhood may result in neurodevelopmental deficits. However, accurate exposure biomarkers are not well established, limiting our understanding of exposure-response relationships over these susceptible periods of development. Naturally shed deciduous teeth are potentially a useful biomarker of environmental exposure to Mn. However, the uptake and distribution of Mn in human teeth has not been studied in detail.Mn distribution was measured at high resolution (~ 20 μm) in eight human primary teeth using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. A bio-imaging methodology was applied to construct detailed elemental maps of three incisors, and bone meal (NIST SRM 1486) was used to validate the analyses.The distribution of Mn in enamel and coronal dentine showed a distinct and reproducible pattern. In enamel, the 55Mn:43Ca ratio was highest at the outer edge of enamel (range = 0.57 to 4.74) for approximately 20-40 μm but was substantially lower in deeper layers (range = 0.005 to 0.013). The highest levels of Mn were observed in dentine immediately adjacent the pulpal margin (55Mn:43Ca range = 2.27 to 6.95). Importantly, a clearly demarcated high Mn zone was observed in dentine at the incisal end of the teeth. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy to visualize the neonatal line, this region was identified as being in the prenatally formed dentine.The high-resolution map of the spatial distribution of Mn in human primary teeth highlighted specific reproducible patterns of Mn distribution in enamel and coronal dentine.  相似文献

Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) is a recalcitrant energetic chemical that tends to accumulate in soil, close to the surface. The present study describes the aerobic biodegradability of HMX using Phanerochaete chrysosporium. When added to 7 day old static P. chrysosporium liquid cultures, HMX (600 nmol) degraded within 25 days of incubation. The removal of HMX was concomitant with the formation of transient amounts of its mono-nitroso derivative (1-NO-HMX). The latter apparently degraded via two potential routes: the first involved N-denitration followed by hydrolytic ring cleavage, and the second involved alpha-hydroxylation prior to ring cleavage. The degradation of 1-NO-HMX gave the ring-cleavage product 4-nitro-2,4-diazabutanal (NDAB), nitrite (NO2 -), nitrous oxide (N2O), and formaldehyde (HCHO). Using [14C]-HMX, we obtained 14CO2 (70% in 50 days), representing three C atoms of HMX. Incubation of real soils, contaminated with either HMX (403 micromol kg(-1)) (military base soil) or HMX (3057 micromol kg(-1)), and RDX (342 micromol kg(-1)) (ammunition soil) with the fungus led to 75 and 19.8% mineralization of HMX (liberated 14CO2), respectively, also via the intermediary formation of 1-NO-HMX. Mineralization in the latter soil increased to 35% after the addition of glucose, indicating that a fungus-based remediation process for heavily contaminated soils is promising. The present findings improve our understanding about the degradation pathway of HMX and demonstrate the utility of using the robust and versatile fungus P. chrysosporium to develop effective remediation processes for the removal of HMX.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for early death following transplantation in the Canadian heart transplant experience. METHODS: A retrospective multicentre study of the Canadian experience in heart transplantation was performed to evaluate the role of risk factors of early death within 30 days following transplantation. Eight hundred and thirty-three patients older than 15 years underwent cardiac transplantation between 1981 and 1992 in 10 centres across Canada. The association between risk factors and early mortality was analyzed with a multivariate logistic model to examine simultaneously the effect of all risk factors. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients (9%) died during the first month following transplantation. Recipient age (P = 0.549), sex (P = 0.554) and body mass (P = 0.313) had no effect. Baseline pulmonary vascular resistance (P < 0.001) and systolic pulmonary pressure (P = 0.021) before transplantation were related to early death. Older donors (P = 0.027) were associated with a higher rate of early death but there was no relation with donor sex (P = 0.597), body mass (P = 0.413), blood group (P = 0.227) and ischemic time (P = 0.309). Patients with pulmonary vascular resistance of 6 or greater (Wood units) and donors older than 50 years had relative risks of early death five and two times, respectively, those of patients without these risk factors. CONCLUSION: Patient survival averaged 91% one month following transplantation in the Canadian experience between 1981 and 1992. The two predictors most strongly correlated with early death were elevated pulmonary vascular resistance at baseline and older donors.  相似文献

The hypothesis that episodic memory retrieval can occur in parallel with other cognitive processes was tested in 2 experiments. Participants memorized words and then performed speeded cued recall (Experiment 1) or speeded yes-no recognition (Experiment 2) in a dual-task situation. The psychological refractory period design was used: The participant was presented with a single test item at various stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs; 50-1,000 ms) after a tone was presented in an auditory-manual 2-alternative choice reaction task. Reducing the SOA increased the memory task reaction times. This slowing was additive with the effect of variables slowing retrieval in the memory task. The results indicate that memory retrieval is delayed by central processes in the choice task, arguing that the central bottleneck responsible for dual-task interference encompasses memory retrieval as well as response selection. A patented method to provide acrylic acid:styrene (AA:Sty) copolymers with a variety of AA:Sty mole ratios is described. This method allows the polymer to be provided as a solution in water with up to 50 mol% styrene. The addition of significant amounts of styrene provides increased polymer solubility in liquid laundry detergents without sacrificing the traditional benefits of typical polycarboxylates. Studies were run in a Tergotometer and full-scale U.S. washing machine, showing particulate soil antiredeposition performance equivalent to poly(acrylic acid) with a molecular weight of 4500 and improved oily soil antiredeposition. The dry polymer is soluble in several glycols, a behavior not typically seen with polycarboxylates.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the transdermal iontophoresis of a newly designed capsaicin derivative, sodium nonivamide propionate (SNP). The iontophoretic permeation of SNP from various pH buffers increased following the decrease of pH values. This trend was consistent with that of sodium nonivamide acetate (SNA) which is another synthetic analogue of capsaicin. However, the iontophoretic permeability of SNP was much lower than that of SNA. SNP was also delivered iontophoretically from hydrogel formulations. It is suggested that ionizable polymers should be avoided for iontophoretic delivery to maintain good penetration capacity of drugs. Both nonionic cellulose polymers of methylcellulose (MC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) showed higher iontophoretic flux for SNP than the others did. Furthermore, the flux of SNP leveled off with an increase in the amount of polymers in hydrogel, indicating that the viscosity of vehicles plays an important role in the permeation of SNP. Comparing the various iontophoretic application modes, the discontinuous on/off cyclic mode showed higher penetration capacity than did the continuous mode although they possessed the same electrical energy. Moreover, the desorption time of SNP from skin was approximately 20 min which was longer than that of SNA.  相似文献
