Auxetic materials are endowed with a behavior that contradicts common sense, when subjected to an axial tensile load they increase their transverse dimension. In case of a compression load, they reduce their transverse dimension. Consequently, these materials have a negative Poisson’s ratio in such direction. This paper reviews research related to these materials. It presents the theories that explain their deformation behavior and reveals the important role represented by the internal structure. Their mechanical properties are explored and some potential applications for these materials are shown.  相似文献

Abstract:  This study proposes an alternate method for the analysis of beams with solid cross-section or built as a framed structure and subjected to transverse impact loads from an external striker. The procedure used in the analysis is a combination of two essential tools using pseudo-dynamic techniques. The method reported here involves only one degree of freedom for the structure modelling and assumes an elastic contact between an external striker and the beam structure, which in reality does not happen. As only one degree of freedom is considered in the analysis, some important limitations are inherent to the method proposed here. Essentially, there is the difficulty of modelling the displacement field associated with the transient structure behaviour accurately, as a consequence of fast-rate impact loads. Another difficulty faced by the method refers to a local structure behaviour associated with contact loads. The present method can deal with large displacements in transversely loaded beams associated to a collapse mechanism having a simple geometry and defined with precision from a single parameter. This ensures reasonable accuracy in the evaluation of the strain energy absorbing capacity of transversely impacted beam structures using a single degree of freedom model in a pseudo-dynamic procedure.  相似文献

Topical chemotherapy with paromomycin (PA) has been used as an alternative for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis; however, poor skin penetration of this drug limits the efficacy of formulations. The objective of this work was to study the ability of the PA free base to form ion pairing with organic acids, as well as evaluate the effect of these compounds on the topical delivery of PA. PA permeation across intact skin was low, while drug penetration into skin from PA ion pairing was the higher than that observed for the PA base. Data obtained on the stripped skin, a damaged skin model, clearly showed that the ion pairing presented a potential to improve PA skin permeation.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the biodistribution and the elimination kinetics of a biocompatible magnetic fluid, Endorem™, based on dextran-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles endovenously injected into Winstar rats. The iron content in blood and liver samples was recorded using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques. The EPR line intensity at g = 2.1 was found to be proportional to the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles and the best temperature for spectra acquisition was 298 K. Both EPR and XRF analysis indicated that the maximum concentration of iron in the liver occurred 95 min after the ferrofluid administration. The half-life of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) in the blood was (11.6 ± 0.6) min measured by EPR and (12.6 ± 0.6) min determined by XRF. These results indicate that both EPR and XRF are very useful and appropriate techniques for the study of kinetics of ferrofluid elimination and biodistribution after its administration into the organism.  相似文献

An automatic method is established for layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly of biomimetic coatings in cell culture microplates using a commercial liquid‐handling robot. Highly homogeneous thin films are formed at the bottom of each microwell. The LbL film‐coated microplates are compatible with common cellular assays, using microplate readers and automated microscopes. Cellular adhesion is screened on crosslinked and peptide‐functionalized LbL films and stem cell differentiation in response to increasing doses of bone morphogenetic proteins (2, 4, 7, 9). This method paves the way for future applications of LbL films in cell‐based assays for regenerative medicine and high‐throughput drug screening.  相似文献

The development of low-cost, accurate, and equipment-free diagnostic tests is crucial to many clinical, laboratory, and field applications, including forensics and medical diagnostics. Cellulose fiber-based paper is an inexpensive, biodegradable, and renewable resource, the use of which as a biomolecule detection matrix and support confers several advantages compared to traditional materials such as glass. In this context, a new, facile method for the preparation of surface functionalized papers bearing single-stranded probe DNA (ssDNA) for rapid target hybridization via capillary transport is presented. Optimized reaction conditions were developed that allowed the direct, one-step activation of standard laboratory filters by the inexpensive and readily available bifunctional linking reagent, 1,4-phenylenediisothiocyanate. Such papers were thus amenable to subsequent coupling of amine-labeled ssDNA under standard conditions widely used for glass-based supports. The intrinsic wicking ability of the paper matrix facilitated rapid sample elution through arrays of probe DNA, leading to significant, detectable hybridization in the time required for the sample liquid to transit the vertical length of the strip (less than 2 min). The broad applicability of these paper test strips as rapid and specific diagnostics in "real-life" situations was exemplified by the discrimination of amplicons generated from canine and human mitochondrial and genomic DNA in mock forensic samples.  相似文献

The variation of conductivity and thermopower with temperature for Rb3(H3O)0.2[Pt(CN)4](O3SO·H·OSO3)0.5·0.8H2O is reported. The abrupt falls in conductivity at low temperature previously reported have been carefully studied and from the non-reproducible nature of the phenomena, it is deduced that these result from cracks in the sample rather than a phase change in the material.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of pulmonary fibrosis in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) is poorly understood, but a number of recent studies have demonstrated an inflammatory process involving the lower respiratory tract. The objective of the present study was to determine the concentrations of several cytokines in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid of patients with SSc and to assess whether the enhanced expression of certain cytokines is associated with the presence of alveolitis. METHODS: BAL was performed on patients with SSc (with or without alveolitis) and on normal control subjects. Lyophilized BAL fluid samples were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha), interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha), IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, macrophage inflammatory protein 1alpha (MIP-1alpha), and RANTES. RESULTS: There were significant differences between groups in the BAL fluid concentrations of TNF alpha (P = 0.0005, with levels in SSc patients with alveolitis higher than those in normal controls), IL-8 (P = 0.006, with levels in both SSc groups higher than those in normal controls), MIP-1alpha (P = 0.009, with levels in SSc patients with alveolitis higher than those in SSc patients without alveolitis and than those in normal controls), and RANTES (P = 0.03, with levels in SSc patients without alveolitis higher than those in normal controls). With the exception of RANTES, the highest levels were detected in SSc patients with alveolitis. CONCLUSION: Each of these cytokines, either alone or in combination, may play an important role in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis in SSc.  相似文献
